Do You Have to File DoorDash Income on Your Taxes?

If you drove for DoorDash this year, you have to file a federal tax return and pay self-employment tax once your net profit from deliveries reaches $400, even if DoorDash never sends you a tax form. Filing taxes as a DoorDash driver means reporting your earnings as self-employment income on Schedule C, calculating self-employment tax on Schedule SE, and attaching both to your Form 1040. DoorDash treats you as an independent contractor, so nothing is withheld from your pay, and the responsibility to track income, claim deductions, and pay what you owe sits with you.

When You Must File

Two separate thresholds can force you to file, and either one is enough on its own.

The first is the self-employment threshold. If your DoorDash earnings minus your deductible business expenses come to $400 or more for the year, you must file a return and pay self-employment tax.1Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes) This applies whether or not DoorDash sends you a tax form, and whether or not you have any other income.

The second is the general filing threshold. If your total gross income from all sources exceeds the standard deduction for your filing status, you must file. For the 2026 tax year, the standard deduction for single filers is $16,100.2Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026

The $400 rule is what catches most drivers by surprise, because it is based on net profit rather than gross pay. If you were paid $1,200 by DoorDash and had $900 in deductible mileage and other expenses, your net profit is $300 and the self-employment filing requirement does not kick in. You would still need to file if your combined income from all sources tops the standard deduction.

Whether DoorDash Will Send You a 1099

Starting with payments made in 2026, DoorDash only has to send you a Form 1099-NEC if you earned $2,000 or more during the year. That is a big jump from the prior $600 threshold, following changes under Public Law 119-21.3Internal Revenue Service. Publication 15 (2026), (Circular E), Employers Tax Guide

More drivers will now receive no 1099-NEC at all. That does not change what you owe. If your net profit is $400 or more, you must report the income. Pull your total earnings from the earnings section of the DoorDash driver app and use that figure. You may separately receive a Form 1099-K if payments ran through a third-party payment network that met its own reporting threshold.4Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K

The Forms You File and the Tax You Owe

DoorDash income goes on Schedule C of Form 1040. You report your total gross earnings at the top, subtract your business expenses (car and truck expenses, supplies, phone costs, and so on), and end up with a net profit or loss.5Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040)

That net profit then flows to Schedule SE, where you calculate self-employment tax. The rate is 15.3 percent: 12.4 percent for Social Security and 2.9 percent for Medicare. The tax applies to 92.35 percent of your net earnings, an adjustment that accounts for the employer-equivalent portion. For 2026, the Social Security portion only hits the first $184,500 of combined wages and self-employment income; the Medicare portion has no cap.1Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes)6Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base

You get one built-in break: half of your self-employment tax is deductible as an adjustment to income on Form 1040, which lowers your adjusted gross income and your regular income tax. The calculation happens on Schedule SE and transfers to Schedule 1.7Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax

Deductions That Lower Your Tax Bill

Business deductions reduce your net profit on Schedule C, which cuts both your income tax and your self-employment tax. Tracking every eligible expense during the year is the most useful thing you can do for your tax bill.

Mileage

The standard mileage rate for 2026 is 72.5 cents per business mile.8Internal Revenue Service. IRS Sets 2026 Business Standard Mileage Rate at 72.5 Cents per Mile, Up 2.5 Cents For most delivery drivers this is the single largest deduction. To claim it, keep a log with the date, starting point and destination, business purpose, and miles driven for each trip, plus your odometer readings at the start and end of the tax year. The IRS expects records to be created around the time of each trip, not reconstructed at tax time.

Instead of the standard rate, you can deduct actual vehicle expenses (gas, insurance, maintenance, depreciation) at the business-use percentage. You pick one method per vehicle.

Other Business Expenses

Beyond mileage, common write-offs include the business-use portion of your phone bill, insulated delivery bags, phone mounts, parking fees and tolls paid on deliveries, and roadside assistance memberships used for work. Keep receipts.

Health Insurance Premiums

If you pay for your own health coverage and are not eligible for a plan through a spouse’s employer, you can deduct your premiums as an adjustment to income. That covers medical, dental, and qualified long-term care insurance for you, your spouse, your dependents, and your children under 27.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 502, Medical and Dental Expenses

Qualified Business Income Deduction

As a sole proprietor, you may qualify for the Qualified Business Income deduction under Section 199A. For 2026, this lets you deduct up to 23 percent of your qualified business income from your taxable income. The deduction was made permanent and raised from 20 percent by the One, Big, Beautiful Bill. It sits on top of your Schedule C expenses rather than replacing them. Income limits and phase-outs apply at higher earnings.

Earned Income Tax Credit

Self-employment income counts as earned income for the Earned Income Tax Credit. For 2026, the maximum credit reaches $8,231 for taxpayers with three or more qualifying children, with smaller amounts for taxpayers with fewer or no children, subject to income limits.2Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments

Because nothing is withheld from your DoorDash pay, you may owe estimated tax payments during the year. The rule applies if you expect to owe at least $1,000 in tax after withholding from any other jobs and refundable credits.10Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes

The 2026 payment deadlines:

  • First quarter: April 15, 2026
  • Second quarter: June 15, 2026
  • Third quarter: September 15, 2026
  • Fourth quarter: January 15, 2027

You calculate each payment on Form 1040-ES. You can avoid the underpayment penalty by paying at least 90 percent of the tax you will owe for the current year, or 100 percent of the tax shown on your prior-year return, whichever is smaller. If your prior-year adjusted gross income was above $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately), the prior-year figure rises to 110 percent.10Internal Revenue Service. How to File and Pay

You can file electronically through IRS e-file or authorized tax software, which confirms receipt and speeds processing. Paper filers mail Form 1040 and attachments to the IRS address for their area.

The annual deadline for most taxpayers is April 15.12Internal Revenue Service. When to File Filing Form 4868 gets you an automatic six-month extension to submit paperwork, but not to pay. Any balance you owe is still due April 15, and interest and penalties start after that.13Internal Revenue Service. Penalties for Missing Deadlines

Two penalties can apply if you miss the deadline, and they can stack.

The failure-to-file penalty is 5 percent of unpaid tax for each month or partial month the return is late, up to 25 percent.15Internal Revenue Service. Collection Procedural Questions 3 The failure-to-pay penalty is 0.5 percent of unpaid tax for each month or partial month the balance sits unpaid, also capped at 25 percent.16Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty The IRS also charges interest on unpaid balances, adjusted quarterly. Filing on time, even if you cannot pay the full amount, avoids the steeper failure-to-file penalty.

A separate underpayment penalty can apply if you were supposed to make quarterly estimated payments and did not pay enough. It is based on the shortfall, how long it went unpaid, and the IRS’s quarterly interest rate.17Internal Revenue Service. Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty

How Long to Keep Your Records

Keep your mileage logs, expense receipts, any 1099 forms, and copies of your DoorDash earnings statements for at least three years after you file. The IRS can audit returns within that window, and organized records are your best defense if the agency questions your income or deductions.18Internal Revenue Service. How Long Should I Keep Records
