Do You Get a W-2 From DoorDash or a 1099-NEC?

No, DoorDash does not give you a W-2. Dashers are independent contractors, so DoorDash reports your pay on Form 1099-NEC instead — and only if you earned $2,000 or more from the platform in 2026. Nothing is withheld from your deposits, which means reporting the income and paying the tax are on you.

Why There’s No W-2

A W-2 goes to employees, the people whose employers withhold income tax, Social Security, and Medicare from every paycheck. DoorDash does none of that. You pick your own hours, drive your own car, use your own phone, and accept or decline orders as you like. Under federal tax law, that independence makes you a contractor, not an employee.1DoorDash. Because you’re not on payroll, DoorDash doesn’t pay the employer share of payroll taxes for you either. Instead, the IRS requires the company to report what it paid you on Form 1099-NEC, Nonemployee Compensation.2Internal Revenue Service. Reporting Payments to Independent Contractors Box 1 of that form shows your gross pay for the year, before any expenses.

When You’ll Get a 1099-NEC

For tax years starting in 2026, DoorDash must send you a 1099-NEC only if it paid you $2,000 or more during the year. That threshold was raised from $600 by federal legislation, and the IRS will adjust it for inflation starting in 2027.3Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Publication 1099

Not getting a form doesn’t make the money tax-free. The IRS requires you to file a return and pay self-employment tax if your net earnings from self-employment reach $400 or more in a year, whether or not a company sends you paperwork.4Internal Revenue Service. Check if You Need to File a Tax Return Net earnings means your DoorDash pay minus your deductible business expenses. Earn $1,200 after expenses dashing on weekends, and you still owe tax on it.

Where to Find the Form

DoorDash must provide your 1099-NEC by January 31 of the year after the tax year.5Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC Starting with tax year 2025 forms, DoorDash delivers them through the Dasher app rather than the Stripe Express dashboard it used before.6Stripe. Guide to 1099 Tax Forms for DoorDash Dashers and Merchants Electronic delivery usually beats mailed paper copies by several days.

Before year-end, check that your legal name, Social Security Number, and mailing address are correct in the app. If the form arrives with the wrong name or taxpayer ID after January 31, contact DoorDash Support to request a corrected 1099.7DoorDash Support. What You Actually Owe

You owe two things on your DoorDash income: regular income tax at whatever rate applies to your total income, and self-employment tax at 15.3% on your net earnings. The 15.3% covers Social Security (12.4%) and Medicare (2.9%) — the parts an employer and employee would split at a regular job.8Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes)

You do get one built-in break. Half of the self-employment tax you pay is deductible when you calculate your adjusted gross income, which lowers your income tax bill.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax Every self-employed person gets it. You claim it on Schedule 1 of Form 1040.

How to File It

Your DoorDash earnings go on Schedule C, Profit or Loss from Business, which you file with your Form 1040. Put the Box 1 amount from your 1099-NEC on line 1 as gross receipts.10Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040) If you earned under the reporting threshold and got no form, enter the full amount you were paid anyway. Business expenses go in Parts II and V, and your net profit carries over to the 1040.

Then use Schedule SE to figure the self-employment tax on that net profit. Both schedules travel with your return.

Deductions That Cut the Bill

The biggest deduction for most Dashers is vehicle mileage. For 2026, the IRS standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per mile driven for business.11Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Standard Mileage Rates That rate already covers gas, insurance, depreciation, and maintenance, so you can’t claim those costs separately if you use it. Parking and tolls come on top.

To claim the mileage, keep a log with the date, destination, business purpose, and miles for each trip.12Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 510, Business Use of Car Several apps track this automatically while you dash. Without records, the IRS can throw the whole deduction out.

Other expenses Dashers commonly deduct:

  • The business-use share of your phone plan and device, plus car mounts and chargers
  • Insulated bags, drink holders, courier backpacks, and blankets
  • Tolls and parking paid while making deliveries

Keep receipts or digital records for anything you plan to deduct. You have to pick either the standard mileage rate or the actual-expense method for a given vehicle in a given year; you can’t mix them.

Quarterly Estimated Payments

Since nothing is withheld from your DoorDash deposits, the IRS generally expects estimated payments during the year if you’ll owe $1,000 or more at filing.13Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes

The 2026 deadlines are:

  • First quarter: April 15, 2026
  • Second quarter: June 15, 2026
  • Third quarter: September 15, 2026
  • Fourth quarter: January 15, 2027

You can skip the January 15 payment if you file your 2026 return and pay the balance in full by February 1, 2027.14Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Form 1040-ES Estimated Tax for Individuals Use Form 1040-ES to figure each payment, or pay online through IRS Direct Pay.

You can generally avoid an underpayment penalty by paying at least 90% of the current year’s tax or 100% of last year’s tax, whichever is smaller. If your prior-year adjusted gross income topped $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately), that safe harbor rises to 110% of last year’s tax.15Internal Revenue Service. Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty If you also hold a W-2 job, bumping up withholding there can cover your DoorDash tax and let you skip quarterly filings.

Backup Withholding

One situation does put withholding on your Dasher pay. If you gave DoorDash an incorrect Social Security Number or none at all, the company may be required to withhold 24% of your earnings as backup withholding and send it to the IRS.16Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding It isn’t an extra tax; it’s a prepayment against what you already owe, and you get credit for it on your return. To stop it, provide your correct taxpayer ID in the app. Once the IRS confirms the match, your full pay resumes.
