Do Wire Transfers Process on Weekends? Cut-Offs and FedNow/RTP Alternatives

Wire transfers do not process on weekends. The Fedwire Funds Service, the Federal Reserve network that actually moves money between U.S. banks, is closed every Saturday and Sunday and on all federal holidays observed by the Reserve Banks. You can still submit a wire request through your bank’s website or app on a Saturday or Sunday, but the funds will not begin moving until the next business day Fedwire is open, which is normally Monday morning.1Federal Reserve Financial Services. Why Weekends Stop a Wire

Two networks carry nearly all large-value dollar transfers between U.S. banks: the Fedwire Funds Service, run by the Federal Reserve Banks, and the Clearing House Interbank Payments System (CHIPS), run by The Clearing House Payments Company. When your bank sends a wire, Fedwire immediately and irrevocably moves funds between the sending and receiving banks’ accounts held at the Federal Reserve. Without that central settlement, a bank has no independent way to move high-value payments to another institution.2Federal Register. On a business day, Fedwire runs for 22 hours, from 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time the previous evening until 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time. On Saturdays, Sundays, and Federal Reserve holidays, it is completely offline, along with the National Settlement Service that handles multilateral settlements for private clearinghouses.1Federal Reserve Financial Services. What Happens to a Wire You Submit on a Saturday or Sunday

A wire request entered on a weekend sits in your bank’s queue. Nothing moves until Fedwire reopens. In practice:

  • A wire submitted any time Saturday or Sunday begins processing Monday morning.
  • A wire submitted Friday after your bank’s daily cut-off also waits until Monday.
  • If Monday is a federal holiday, settlement shifts to Tuesday.
  • A Friday-evening submission ahead of a Monday holiday can sit idle for three or four calendar days before the funds move.

Each bank sets its own daily cut-off for same-day processing, usually somewhere between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time for domestic wires. A request submitted before the cut-off on a business day typically settles the same day, often within minutes once Fedwire processes it. Anything after the cut-off is queued for the next business day.

Once a domestic wire settles, the receiving bank must make the funds available for withdrawal no later than the next business day after receipt, under the Expedited Funds Availability Act and Regulation CC.4Federal Reserve. Regulation CC Most banks credit incoming wires the same day they arrive, but next business day is the legal backstop.

Federal Reserve Holidays That Also Block Settlement

Beyond every Saturday and Sunday, Fedwire closes on these 2026 holidays, and no wire settles on these dates:1Federal Reserve Financial Services. Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours

  • New Year’s Day — Thursday, January 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day — Monday, January 19
  • Washington’s Birthday — Monday, February 16
  • Memorial Day — Monday, May 25
  • Juneteenth — Friday, June 19
  • Independence Day — Saturday, July 4 (Friday, July 3 is a normal business day)
  • Labor Day — Monday, September 7
  • Columbus Day — Monday, October 12
  • Veterans Day — Wednesday, November 11
  • Thanksgiving — Thursday, November 26
  • Christmas — Friday, December 25

When a holiday falls on a Sunday, the Federal Reserve closes the following Monday. When it falls on a Saturday, as with Independence Day in 2026, the preceding Friday still runs as a normal business day; the holiday just coincides with a day the system is already closed.5Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Can You Cancel a Weekend Wire Before Monday?

Because a weekend request sits unprocessed, you often have a window to cancel or change it. Under Article 4A of the Uniform Commercial Code, adopted in every state, a cancellation is effective if the bank receives it in time to act before accepting or executing the payment order.6Legal Information Institute (LII) / Cornell Law School. UCC 4A-211 – Cancellation and Amendment of Payment Order Since the bank cannot send anything to Fedwire over the weekend, a cancellation reached in that window should succeed as a legal matter.

Practice is messier. Banks vary in how they handle cancellations, often require a phone call during business hours, and may charge a fee. Some explicitly warn that once a wire request is received they may not be able to cancel it, and if they try they will not guarantee success. If Monday morning comes and the wire goes out before you reach anyone, your only remaining option is to ask the bank to attempt a recall from the receiving institution, which is voluntary on the other end.

One built-in safety net: an unaccepted payment order cancels automatically by operation of law at the close of the fifth business day after its scheduled execution date.6Legal Information Institute (LII) / Cornell Law School. UCC 4A-211 – Cancellation and Amendment of Payment Order That prevents stale requests from going out weeks later, but it does nothing to stop a wire scheduled to execute Monday morning.

International Wires: Expect More Delay

Cross-border wires carry the same weekend problem and add others on top. The SWIFT network carries the payment messages between banks worldwide but does not itself move money. Each bank in the chain acts on those messages during its own local business hours.7Swift. Homepage

An international wire often passes through one or more intermediary correspondent banks. Each one processes the transfer on its own business days, runs its own compliance checks, and may deduct a fee before passing it on. Three banks in the chain can mean three business days as the floor, and that assumes no weekends or holidays fall in between. Normal delivery runs one to three business days, but destination-country rules, local holidays at intermediary banks, and chain length can push that to five business days or longer.

Work-week differences matter too. Not every country operates Monday through Friday. Saudi Arabia’s stock exchange runs Sunday through Thursday. The United Arab Emirates shifted its public-sector weekend to Saturday and Sunday in 2022, while other countries in the region keep different schedules. A wire sent from the U.S. on a Thursday can arrive at a correspondent bank that is closed Friday and Saturday but open Sunday, creating mismatched windows that stretch the total time.

Compliance screening adds a weekend risk of its own. Every bank that handles an international wire must screen it against sanctions lists maintained by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and watch for money-laundering indicators.8FFIEC BSA/AML Manual. BSA/AML Manual Office of Foreign Assets Control If something trips a flag, the wire sits for manual review, and that review happens only during business hours. A flagged wire submitted before a weekend can wait in a compliance queue until the following week.

If You Need the Funds to Arrive on a Weekend

Two newer payment networks bypass the Fedwire shutdown entirely. Both settle in seconds, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including weekends and holidays.

FedNow Service

The Federal Reserve launched the FedNow Service in 2023. It processes instant payments 24/7/365, with each business day running continuously into the next.9Federal Reserve. FedNow Service Operating Hours Funds settle immediately and irrevocably; there is no pending period. As of early 2026, roughly 1,637 financial institutions participate, and the per-transaction limit is $10 million.10Federal Reserve Financial Services. Confirm with your bank whether it supports FedNow in both directions.

Real-Time Payments (RTP) Network

The RTP network, operated by The Clearing House, also clears and settles payments in seconds, 24/7/365, with immediate confirmation.11The Clearing House. Cash Flow Needs from Consumers and Businesses Drive New RTP Network Volume and Value Records The per-transaction cap is also $10 million, and both sending and receiving institutions must participate.

When These Aren’t a Substitute

Neither FedNow nor RTP replaces a traditional wire in every situation. Fedwire handles individual transfers up to just under $10 billion and remains the standard for high-value transactions such as real estate closings and securities settlements.2Federal Register. Federal Reserve Action To Expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours If your payment is under $10 million and both banks are on the same instant-payment network, the weekend problem disappears. If it’s larger, or if the receiving bank doesn’t participate, you’re back to waiting for Monday.

A Change on the Horizon: Fedwire Moving to Seven Days

The Federal Reserve announced in 2025 that it plans to expand Fedwire and the National Settlement Service to operate every day of the week, including Sundays and holidays, keeping the same 22-hour daily window of 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern. That change will not take effect before 2028, as the Federal Reserve wants its own systems and the banking industry fully prepared.12Federal Reserve. Press Release – Fedwire Expansion Until then, the Monday-through-Friday settlement schedule governs every traditional wire you send.
