Domestic wire transfers do not go through on weekends. The Fedwire Funds Service that U.S. banks use to settle wires runs Monday through Friday and shuts down on federal holidays.1Federal Register. Federal Reserve Action To Expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours You can log into your bank on a Saturday and submit a wire request, and you may even get a confirmation number, but the money will not actually move until the next business day. If you need funds to arrive on a weekend, you have to use a different rail: FedNow, the Real-Time Payments network, or an internal transfer at the same bank.
Why the Weekend Shuts Wires Down
A domestic wire does not travel directly from your bank to the recipient’s bank. It passes through the Fedwire Funds Service, a settlement system operated by the Federal Reserve, and both banks have to reach that system for the transfer to complete. Fedwire goes dark from Friday evening through Sunday night, so there is no path for the funds to settle in between.
When you submit a weekend wire, your bank captures the instructions and holds them in a queue. The transfer is not legally complete until the receiving bank credits the beneficiary’s account, a step governed by Article 4A of the Uniform Commercial Code.2Legal Information Institute. UCC – Article 4A – Funds Transfer That cannot happen until the banks exchange reserves through Fedwire, which means Monday at the earliest.
When Your Wire Will Actually Process
Two things determine when a weekend wire finally moves: your bank’s cut-off time and whether Monday is a holiday.
Every bank sets its own daily cut-off for outgoing wires, usually somewhere between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. eastern time. Anything submitted after that window is treated as next-business-day. That makes Friday afternoons risky. A wire sent at 4:30 p.m. on Friday may already have missed the cut-off, pushing processing to Monday morning. Your bank publishes its specific deadline in its wire agreement or online, so confirm the number rather than guessing.
Federal holidays extend the gap. Fedwire closes on every holiday observed by the Reserve Banks, and when a holiday falls on a Sunday, all Federal Reserve offices close the following Monday as well.3Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Holidays Observed – K.8 A wire sent on the Saturday before a Monday holiday will not begin processing until Tuesday.

Ways to Move Money on a Weekend
Fedwire is not the only rail. Several payment systems run independently of its schedule, and at least one of them will usually work for a weekend payment.
FedNow Service
The FedNow Service is a Federal Reserve instant payment system that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.4Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. FedNow Service – Frequently Asked Questions Payments settle in seconds and the recipient gets immediate access to the funds. The per-transaction limit is $10 million as of November 2025.5Federal Reserve Services. Customer Credit Transfer and Liquidity Management Transfer Network Limit Increases The catch is adoption: as of early 2026, around 1,630 financial institutions participate,6Federal Reserve Services. FedNow Participants out of thousands of U.S. banks and credit unions. Your bank may not offer it, or may only accept incoming FedNow payments without supporting outgoing ones.
Real-Time Payments (RTP) Network
Operated by The Clearing House, the RTP network also runs around the clock every day of the year. The per-transaction limit was raised to $10 million in 2025, up from $1 million.7The Clearing House. Breaking Barriers: RTP Network $10 Million Transaction Limit Spurs High-Value Payment Surge Individual banks decide how much of that cap to extend to customers, so your actual sending limit is often lower. RTP reaches roughly 65 percent of U.S. demand deposit accounts.
Same-Bank Internal Transfers
If both you and the recipient hold accounts at the same institution, an internal transfer (sometimes called a book transfer) often clears immediately, including on weekends, because the bank is moving money between its own accounts and never touches Fedwire. Confirm with your bank that weekend book transfers are available and that no holds apply before relying on this for a time-sensitive payment.
Peer-to-Peer Apps
Zelle, Venmo, and PayPal all send money on weekends, which makes them fine for smaller amounts. They carry daily and per-transaction limits well below what a wire transfer handles, and the Federal Reserve has noted that some apps hold funds inside the app rather than depositing directly into a bank account.4Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. FedNow Service – Frequently Asked Questions For large or legally significant payments, FedNow or RTP are the stronger weekend alternatives.
What a Weekend Delay Can Cost You
A pending wire is more than an inconvenience when a deadline sits on the other side of the weekend.
Real Estate Closings
Many real estate contracts contain a “time is of the essence” clause that makes the closing date binding. If closing is on a Monday and you assume a Saturday wire will arrive in time, you can miss the deadline. Under contracts with strict timing clauses, failing to deliver funds on the closing date can be treated as a breach, letting the seller cancel, keep the earnest money deposit, or pursue damages.
Section 1031 Exchanges
Some IRS deadlines do not flex for weekends or banking schedules. In a Section 1031 like-kind exchange, you have 45 days to identify replacement property and 180 days to close. The IRS has stated that these limits “cannot be extended for any circumstance or hardship” other than a presidentially declared disaster.8IRS. Like-Kind Exchanges Under IRC Section 1031 If your 180th day lands on a weekend and closing depends on a wire, the money will not move until Monday, which can be after the deadline.
What You Can Recover from the Bank
If a bank accepts your wire and then fails to execute it properly, causing a delay beyond the agreed execution date, the bank owes interest to you or the recipient for the delay period. You generally cannot recover other losses, such as a lost deal or a late penalty, unless you have a written agreement that specifically allows consequential damages.9Legal Information Institute. UCC 4A-305 – Liability for Late or Improper Execution or Failure to Execute Payment Order A plain weekend delay does not count as improper execution, because the bank never promised to process the wire while Fedwire was closed. That provision applies when the bank could have processed the wire and did not.
Canceling a Weekend Wire Before Monday
The gap between submission and Monday processing creates a cancellation window. Under the UCC, a cancellation request is effective as long as the bank receives it in time to act before accepting the payment order.10Legal Information Institute. UCC 4A-211 – Cancellation and Amendment of Payment Order A wire submitted on Saturday is not accepted until Fedwire reopens, so you usually have until early Monday to contact your bank and stop it.
There are practical limits. Your cancellation request must pass whatever security procedure the bank uses to verify wire authorizations. Banks set their own internal cut-offs for processing cancellations, and some begin executing queued wires as soon as Fedwire opens Sunday night. Once the bank sends the order through Fedwire, the transfer is final. A payment order that is never accepted automatically cancels after the fifth business day.2Legal Information Institute. UCC – Article 4A – Funds Transfer
This window matters most if you spot an error or suspect fraud. The FBI has said that once wired funds leave the account, they are “difficult to trace and recover,” with wire-related fraud complaints exceeding $262 million in losses in 2025.11FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center. Account Takeover Fraud via Impersonation of Financial Institution If something feels wrong about a wire you sent on a Saturday, call the bank before Monday morning.
Sunday Wires Are Coming in 2028 or 2029
The Federal Reserve has announced plans to expand Fedwire to 22 hours a day, 6 days a week, running from Sunday evening through Friday evening and including weekday holidays. The expected implementation date is 2028 or 2029, depending on participant readiness.12Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Expansion of Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours Once that takes effect, wires submitted on Sunday evenings will begin processing that night rather than waiting for Monday, and Saturday will be the only full day with no Fedwire access. Until then, the Monday-through-Friday schedule is what you have to plan around.
