Do US Green Card Holders Need a Visa for Australia?

Yes. U.S. Green Card holders need a visa to enter Australia, because Australia sets visa requirements based on the passport you carry, not your U.S. permanent residency. Every non-Australian citizen except New Zealand passport holders must arrange a visa or travel authority before arriving, and a Permanent Resident Card does not qualify you for any of the visa waivers available to U.S. citizens.1Embassy of Australia. Entering or Leaving Australia Which visa you apply for, and what it costs, depends on the passport in your hand.

Your Passport Decides, Not Your Green Card

Australian immigration reads your passport when deciding which visa pathways are open to you. Your Green Card proves you can live and work in the United States, but it carries no weight with Australian border authorities. Two Green Card holders on the same flight can face very different processes if one holds a British passport and the other holds an Indian one.

The practical effect: if your passport country appears on Australia’s ETA or eVisitor list, you can use those faster, cheaper options even though you live in the U.S. If it doesn’t, you apply for the standard Visitor visa, which is open to every nationality but takes longer and costs more.2Tourism Australia. Which Visa You’ll Use

Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601)

The ETA is a digital travel authorization allowing unlimited visits over 12 months, up to three months per visit. It costs AUD 20 as a service fee, with no additional visa application charge, and approval through the Australian ETA app often comes within minutes.3Department of Home Affairs. Subclass 601 Electronic Travel Authority

Only passport holders from a specific list of countries can use it. U.S. passport holders are eligible; if you haven’t naturalized, check whether your passport country is on the list. Holders of non-citizen travel documents, certificates of identity, or refugee travel documents cannot apply for an ETA regardless of their U.S. residency.

eVisitor (Subclass 651)

The eVisitor works like the ETA, with visits up to three months at a time over a 12-month period, but it’s free and limited to passport holders from European countries.4Department of Home Affairs. Subclass 651 eVisitor If you hold an EU passport (or a handful of other European nationalities) and live in the U.S. on a Green Card, this is your cheapest route in.

Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)

The Visitor visa is open to every nationality, so passport country doesn’t matter. You can apply for stays of 3, 6, or 12 months. As of July 2025, the application fee is AUD 200 when applying from outside Australia. This is the visa most Green Card holders whose passport isn’t on the ETA or eVisitor list will use.

Two conditions attach to it. Condition 8101 bars you from working in Australia, including unpaid work that someone would normally be paid for. Condition 8201 caps any study or training at three months.5Department of Home Affairs. Check Visa Details and Conditions

Transit Visa (Subclass 771)

If you’re only passing through on your way somewhere else, the Transit visa covers a stay of up to 72 hours and is free.6Department of Home Affairs. Subclass 771 Transit Visa You still have to apply in advance. Travelers who skip this because they assume a layover doesn’t count as entering the country get stopped at the gate.

What Every Applicant Has to Meet

Whichever visa you apply for, Australia checks the same baseline requirements.

Character

Australia can refuse or cancel a visa if you have criminal convictions or pending charges anywhere in the world. The assessment sits under section 501 of the Migration Act 1958 and looks at your past and present conduct.7Department of Home Affairs. Character Requirements for Visas A record doesn’t automatically disqualify you, but you must disclose everything. The Department of Home Affairs may ask for police certificates from any country where you’ve spent 12 months or more in the past 10 years since turning 16.

Health

Most applicants have to show they won’t pose a public health risk or draw heavily on Australia’s healthcare system.8Department of Home Affairs. Health – Immigration and Citizenship Some applicants are directed to complete a medical examination with a physician approved by the Australian government.

Genuine Temporary Stay

For the Visitor visa in particular, Australia wants to see you genuinely plan to visit and leave. That means evidence of reasons to return home — a job, family, property, ongoing commitments — plus enough money to cover the stay and your flight back without relying on Australian public funds.9Department of Home Affairs. Evidence of Sufficient Funds Any outstanding debts to the Australian government must be cleared before a visa is granted.

Documents to Have Ready

Pulling these together before you start avoids requests for additional information that stall processing:

  • Your passport’s photo page and details. The visa will be linked electronically to this passport, and it must stay valid for your whole trip.
  • Your Green Card details, including your Alien Registration Number (the “A-Number,” the letter A followed by 8 or 9 digits) and the card’s expiration date.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Immigrant Fee Payment Tips on Finding Your A-Number and DOS Case ID
  • A travel itinerary with flights and accommodation.
  • Financial evidence: bank statements from the last three months, recent pay slips, or audited business accounts.
  • Health examination results, if the application directs you to one.
  • Police certificates, if requested.
  • An employment or enrollment letter, useful for showing ties to your home country.

How You Apply

Almost all Australian visa applications go through ImmiAccount, the Department of Home Affairs’ online portal.11Department of Home Affairs. Applying Online in ImmiAccount You create an account, pick the visa subclass, work through the form, upload supporting documents, and pay the fee before submitting. Keep the login details somewhere safe. You’ll use the same account to check status, respond to requests, and view your visa grant once it’s issued.

Processing Times and Fees

For the Visitor visa tourist stream, about 75 percent of applications are processed within 20 days and 90 percent within 33 days. Incomplete applications push those timelines out.

Australia adjusts visa fees periodically, usually each July, so confirm the current charge on the Department of Home Affairs website before you apply.

Health Insurance Is on You

Visitors generally do not have access to Medicare, Australia’s public health system. Every hospital bill, doctor visit, and emergency treatment during your trip is your responsibility. The Department of Home Affairs recommends arranging private health insurance before you travel, and some visa subclasses make it a formal condition.12Department of Home Affairs. Adequate Health Insurance for Visa Holders An emergency room visit without insurance can easily run into thousands of dollars.

At the Airport

When your visa is approved, you’ll get a grant notification by email confirming the grant number and any conditions. There is no sticker in your passport; the visa is linked electronically to your passport number, which is why you have to travel on the same passport you used to apply.

Before clearing immigration you’ll fill in an Incoming Passenger Card covering your details, flight, intended address in Australia, and customs and quarantine declarations.13Australian Border Force. Incoming Passenger Card (IPC) Some airports are piloting a digital version, so you may see either the paper form or an electronic option depending on your airline and arrival city.

If your passport has an ePassport chip, you may be able to use SmartGate self-service kiosks rather than the staffed line.14Australian Border Force. Who Can Use SmartGates

If Your Visa Is Refused

A refusal isn’t always the end. Australia’s Administrative Review Tribunal can review certain immigration decisions, including visa refusals and cancellations under the Migration Act 1958.15Administrative Review Tribunal. Immigration and Citizenship Deadlines are strict, and the Tribunal generally cannot extend them.

Your refusal letter will state whether your decision is eligible for Tribunal review and what the deadline is. Character-related cancellations have particularly tight windows: as few as 9 days if the decision was made while you were in Australia, or 28 days if made while you were offshore. Applications are filed through the Tribunal’s website. Read the refusal letter carefully first, because not every refusal qualifies for review.
