Anabolic steroids do not show up on a standard probation drug test. The routine 5-panel and 10-panel urine screens used in most probation programs look for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, PCP, and a handful of other common drugs of abuse. Steroids are not on either list. A probation officer or judge can, however, order a specialized steroid test at any point, and those tests are highly accurate. Because anabolic steroids are a Schedule III controlled substance, a positive result can mean both a probation violation and a new criminal charge.
What the Standard Panel Actually Screens For
A standard 5-panel urine test checks for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, and PCP. A 10-panel adds barbiturates, benzodiazepines, methadone, propoxyphene, and methaqualone. The reason is partly cost, partly chemistry. Detecting synthetic hormones requires different analytical techniques than detecting stimulants or opioids, so a lab can’t just add steroids to an existing panel. A dedicated steroid urine panel runs roughly $200 to $270. That price tag is why it isn’t the default.
When a Probation Officer Can Order a Steroid Test
Probation officers have broad discretion over what testing to require, and courts can add specialized testing as a condition of supervision at sentencing or later. Testing is designed to be unpredictable: probationers can be required to give a sample with little or no notice, and the sample can be sent for whatever analysis the court or officer deems appropriate.3United States Courts. A steroid-specific test is most likely when:
- Your underlying conviction involved anabolic steroids — possession, distribution, or manufacturing. In that situation, steroid testing is close to automatic.
- Physical signs raise suspicion. Rapid muscle gain, acne, or mood changes can prompt an officer to request a targeted test.
- A tip, a social media post, or something found during a home visit points to use.
How a Steroid Test Works
The first step on a urine sample is usually the testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio. Your body produces both hormones in roughly equal amounts, so a ratio near 1:1 is normal. Above 4:1 triggers confirmatory analysis, because exogenous testosterone pushes the ratio up without a matching rise in epitestosterone.
Confirmation uses gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). Synthetic testosterone has a slightly different carbon-13 signature than the testosterone your body makes, and IRMS reads that difference. For compounds your body doesn’t produce at all, like nandrolone, stanozolol, or boldenone, any detectable amount is evidence of use.
How Long Steroids Stay Detectable
Detection windows vary enormously depending on whether the compound was oral or an injectable ester. Oral, non-esterified steroids clear the body relatively quickly, often within two to four days.4Waters Corporation. Rough ranges for some common compounds:
- Stanozolol (Winstrol): about 2 to 4 weeks in urine.
- Methandrostenolone (Dianabol): about 3 to 6 weeks.

- Testosterone esters (cypionate, enanthate): generally several weeks, varying with dose and frequency.
Hair testing extends the window further. Each centimeter of scalp hair represents roughly one month of history, and a standard 3.9 cm sample covers about 90 days.6Quest Diagnostics. What Happens If You Test Positive
A positive steroid test triggers the same process as any other failed drug test on probation. The officer reports the violation, the prosecutor files a motion to revoke, and you get notice to appear at a violation hearing.
The standard of proof at that hearing is lower than at a criminal trial. The prosecution only has to show by a preponderance of the evidence — more likely than not — that you violated your conditions. This is where most people’s assumptions about their rights come apart.
If the judge finds a violation, the response can range widely:
- Increased supervision, meaning more frequent check-ins, more testing, or tighter restrictions.
- Mandatory substance abuse treatment or counseling.
- Additional time added to the supervision period.

Refusing to test, or producing a diluted sample, is generally treated the same as a positive. Evasion tends to invite more scrutiny, not less.
A Positive Test Can Also Mean New Criminal Charges
Federal law classifies anabolic steroids as Schedule III controlled substances under the Controlled Substances Act. The statute defines an anabolic steroid as any drug or hormonal substance chemically and pharmacologically related to testosterone, and it lists dozens of named compounds.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. Possessing steroids without a valid prescription is a federal crime in its own right, with penalties of up to a year in prison and a minimum $1,000 fine for a first offense, and heavier penalties with prior drug convictions.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. For someone on probation, a positive test can produce both a violation and a new case.
If You Have a Prescription
Anabolic steroids have legitimate medical uses. Doctors prescribe testosterone for hypogonadism and to counteract muscle wasting in patients with cancer or AIDS. A valid prescription is a legal defense to a possession charge, but it does not automatically shield you on probation.
Probation conditions often require you to disclose all medications, and some conditions prohibit any controlled substance without specific court approval. Failing to disclose a testosterone prescription can itself be treated as a violation. The safer approach is to put the documentation in front of your probation officer before any test happens: the prescribing doctor, the specific medication, dosage, and medical reason. Then, if a specialized test picks up testosterone later, the explanation is already on the record.
A prescription for one compound does not cover others. If you’re prescribed testosterone cypionate but the test finds nandrolone metabolites, the prescription does nothing for the nandrolone.
Who Pays for the Test
Standard probation drug tests are cheap. A specialized steroid panel is not — roughly $200 to $270. Whether you or the court absorbs that cost depends on the jurisdiction and the terms of your supervision. In many places, probationers pay their own testing fees. Some courts designate cases as state-funded when the probationer cannot pay, but that varies widely. If your officer orders a steroid test, ask up front who is responsible for the bill.
