Do Reservists Get BAH If Married? Rates, DEERS, and Zip Code

Yes — reservists do get BAH when they are married, provided they are on active duty orders that qualify for the allowance, and marriage moves them into the higher “with dependents” rate. What trips people up is that reservists don’t draw BAH continuously the way active-duty members do. Whether you receive locality-based BAH or a flat national rate, and how much you actually see on your Leave and Earnings Statement, comes down to the length and type of your orders, your pay grade, and where DEERS says your family lives.

When Your Orders Qualify You for BAH

Federal law draws a bright line at 30 days. If your active duty orders specify a period of more than 30 days, you receive locality-based BAH at the same rate as an active-duty member of the same grade and dependent status.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 37 USC 403 – Basic Allowance for Housing Annual training, active duty for training, active duty for operational support, and mobilizations all count once they cross the threshold.

Orders of 30 days or fewer can still qualify for full locality BAH if the activation supports a contingency operation. That exception matters because mobilizations for named operations or national emergencies often begin with short initial orders that later get extended. If your orders are tied to a contingency, you receive the full rate from day one regardless of length.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 37 USC 403 – Basic Allowance for Housing

Standard drill weekends and short training periods of 30 days or fewer that aren’t tied to a contingency don’t qualify for full locality BAH. You get a flat allowance instead, called BAH Reserve Component/Transit.

What Marriage Actually Changes

BAH pays out in two tiers: “with dependents” and “without dependents.” Marriage puts you in the with-dependents tier whenever you’re otherwise eligible. The Department of Defense does not scale the allowance based on how many dependents you have. One spouse or one child moves you into the higher tier, and adding more dependents doesn’t increase the payment.2Defense Travel Management Office. Basic Allowance for Housing

The gap between the two rates is real money. For an E-5 on short-duration orders drawing the flat BAH-RC/T rate in 2026, the with-dependents rate is $1,403.70 per month against $1,052.70 without dependents. On locality BAH the difference can be wider, depending on the housing market at your duty station.

Get Your Spouse Into DEERS First

You don’t get the with-dependents rate automatically. Your spouse has to be enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) with the right documentation. To add a spouse, bring your marriage certificate, your spouse’s birth certificate, their Social Security card, and a photo ID.3TRICARE. Required Documents For a child, bring a birth certificate and Social Security card.

The service member usually initiates the enrollment. If you’re not available, your spouse can complete it with a DD Form 1172 you signed within the previous 90 days, or with a valid power of attorney.3TRICARE. Required Documents Take care of this before your orders start. Otherwise your first paychecks may come through at the without-dependents rate while the paperwork catches up.

How Much You’ll Get: Locality BAH vs. BAH-RC/T

On orders of more than 30 days (or any length in support of a contingency), you receive locality BAH set by pay grade, dependent status, and zip code. Rates are published each December for the following January, and DoD releases a look-up calculator through the Defense Travel Management Office.2Defense Travel Management Office. Basic Allowance for Housing For 2026, rates rose an average of 4.2 percent over 2025.4Department of Defense. Department of War Releases 2026 Basic Allowance for Housing Rates

On orders of 30 days or fewer that aren’t tied to a contingency, you get BAH-RC/T, a flat national rate that doesn’t vary by location. It depends only on your pay grade and whether you have dependents.5Department of Defense. Types of BAH

A few of the 2026 monthly BAH-RC/T rates for married reservists (with dependents):

  • E-4: $1,219.50
  • E-5: $1,403.70
  • E-6: $1,559.10
  • E-7: $1,687.20
  • O-3: $1,920.30
  • O-4: $2,320.80

These flat rates run well below locality BAH in most metro areas, which is why the 30-day line matters so much to your paycheck.

Which Zip Code Sets Your Rate

Locality BAH doesn’t automatically follow your duty station the way it does for active-duty members on a permanent change of station. For reservist orders between 31 and 139 days, your rate is typically based on your primary residence zip code. For orders of 140 days or more at a single location, the rate shifts to your duty station’s zip code. Orders of 181 days or more with authorization to move household goods also use the duty station rate.

Reservists called up for a contingency operation receive BAH based on their primary residence zip code at the time they were ordered to active duty.6United States Army. ARNG and USAR Finance Mobilization and Demobilization Briefing That helps if you live in a high-cost area but report to a low-cost base. It can also hurt in the reverse case, so check both zip codes before you assume which one pays more.

Back-to-Back Short Orders

Reservists often receive short orders that individually stay under 31 days but together cross it. This is where pay disputes usually start. Stringing short orders together does not automatically upgrade you from BAH-RC/T to locality BAH.

For annual training or active duty for training orders, retroactive full BAH can be approved when successive orders total 31 days or more, if the orders can be shown as a continuous sequence.7Navy Reserve. BAH Entitlements for Successive AT/ADT Orders A 14-day call-up followed by a 17-day extension might still pay only BAH-RC/T unless the activation supports a contingency. Approval usually requires your command to verify the orders are legitimately successive rather than just adjacent on the calendar.

If you see back-to-back orders coming that will cross the 31-day mark, talk to your finance office before the first set starts, so the paperwork reflects continuous service from the outset.

If Your Spouse Is Also in Uniform

The rules shift when both spouses are service members. A dual-military couple without children each receives BAH at the without-dependents rate. If the couple has children, only one spouse may claim them as dependents for BAH. That spouse gets the with-dependents rate; the other stays at without-dependents.8Department of the Air Force. BAH FAQs

You can’t split children between spouses so that both draw the higher rate. The Joint Travel Regulation prohibits it. You can choose which spouse claims the dependents, and it usually makes sense to assign them to whichever spouse is in the higher-cost zip code or the higher pay grade.

BAH Isn’t Taxed

BAH is excluded from gross income for federal and state tax purposes. It’s not subject to Social Security or Medicare taxes, and it won’t show up in Box 1 of your W-2.9Military OneSource. Military Housing Allowance and Your Taxes The number on your LES is the number you keep. A married E-6 drawing $1,559.10 a month in BAH-RC/T sees the full amount, unlike base pay, which gets reduced by withholding.

The other side of that: BAH doesn’t count toward Thrift Savings Plan matching or your Social Security earnings record. Only taxable basic pay does.9Military OneSource. Military Housing Allowance and Your Taxes Worth remembering if allowances make up a large slice of your compensation during activations.

Getting Paid the Right Rate on Time

BAH comes through direct deposit as part of your regular pay during qualifying active duty. Payment processing starts once your orders are initiated and finance has your documentation. Delays usually trace back to three things: DEERS records that don’t reflect a recent marriage, orders that aren’t coded correctly, or a finance office that never received a copy of your orders.

Before any activation, confirm your DEERS enrollment is current, your direct deposit is correct, and your orders clearly state the type and duration of duty. If your orders get extended or changed, take it to finance right away. Retroactive corrections are possible but slow, and drawing the wrong rate for several months while a fix works through the system is one of the more frustrating experiences in reserve service.
