Part-time Walmart employee benefits fall into two groups: perks that everyone gets from day one or shortly after hire, and benefits that only unlock once you average at least 30 hours per week. Education assistance, the 10% associate discount, a free Walmart+ membership, mental health counseling, 401(k) participation, and the stock purchase plan are open to part-time associates regardless of hours. Medical, dental, and vision insurance require you to hit the 30-hour threshold. A few benefits — company-paid life insurance, disability coverage, paid parental leave, and spouse coverage on health plans — are not available to part-time workers at all.1Walmart. 2026 Associate Benefits Book – Summary Plan Descriptions
Benefits You Get Regardless of Hours
Several benefits don’t care how many hours you work.
Live Better U. Walmart covers 100% of tuition and required books for eligible certificate and degree programs at accredited schools. Mental health counseling. All associates get 20 no-cost sessions per person, per year with a licensed therapist or certified mental health coach through a third-party provider. You don’t need to be enrolled in a medical plan to use it, so this is often the most accessible benefit for workers who haven’t yet met the hours threshold for health coverage.
Health Insurance and the 30-Hour Rule
Medical, dental, and vision coverage are the biggest benefits gated by hours. During your first year, Walmart measures your hours every 60 days. If you average at least 30 hours per week during one of those windows, you become eligible to enroll. After that first year, eligibility is reviewed once a year over a 52-week look-back period ahead of October’s annual enrollment. Averaging under 30 hours during that window means losing health coverage for the next plan year, even if your schedule picks back up later.7Walmart. Once eligible, part-timers can pick from three nationwide medical options: the Premier PPO, the Contribution HRA, and the Saver HSA Plan, which is a high-deductible plan paired with a Health Savings Account.1Walmart. 2026 Associate Benefits Book – Summary Plan Descriptions Medical premiums for eligible part-time associates start at $38.30 per biweekly pay period in 2026.6Walmart Corporate. Benefits If you choose the Saver HSA Plan, Walmart matches your HSA contributions dollar-for-dollar up to $350 per year for associate-only coverage and $700 for family coverage. Associates enrolled in a Walmart self-insured medical plan can also use virtual care, including virtual primary care, at $0 co-pay.8Walmart Corporate. Walmart Expands Virtual Health Care Benefits
Dental and vision plans are available alongside medical coverage and cover routine services like cleanings and corrective lenses through provider networks.1Walmart. 2026 Associate Benefits Book – Summary Plan Descriptions
One catch on dependents: part-time associates can cover their children, but not a spouse or domestic partner, on medical, dental, or vision plans. Full-time associates don’t face that restriction.1Walmart. 2026 Associate Benefits Book – Summary Plan Descriptions
401(k) and Stock Purchase Plan
Part-time associates can start contributing to Walmart’s 401(k) as soon as administratively feasible after hire, with no waiting period. The company match works differently. You become eligible for matching contributions on the first day of the calendar month following your first anniversary, provided you’ve been credited with at least 1,000 hours of service during that first year and are actively contributing.9Walmart. The Walmart 401(k) Plan After that, Walmart matches dollar-for-dollar up to 6% of eligible pay, and the match is 100% vested from day one.6Walmart Corporate. Benefits
The Associate Stock Purchase Plan lets you buy Walmart shares through payroll deductions, and the company adds a 15% match on the first $1,800 you contribute each year — up to $270 in free stock annually.6Walmart Corporate. Benefits
Paid Time Off for Part-Time Associates
Walmart splits time off into two buckets. Regular Paid Time Off (PTO) is for planned absences. Protected PTO (PPTO) covers unplanned situations like illness or emergencies and shields you from attendance-related discipline when used.10Walmart Corporate. Walmart Introduces Increased Rewards and Protected PTO for Associates Nationwide
Part-timers accrue PPTO from day one. Under the National Protected PTO Plan, which covers most locations, new part-time workers with zero to two years of service earn one hour of PPTO for roughly every 43 hours worked. In states with paid sick leave laws, the rate is typically one hour for every 30 hours worked.11Walmart. Paid Time Off Plans and Earning Rates
Regular PTO takes longer. In most plans, it doesn’t start accruing until your third year. Once you hit that mark, part-time associates earn one hour of regular PTO for every 60 hours worked, on top of PPTO.11Walmart. Paid Time Off Plans and Earning Rates If you leave Walmart, accrued PTO and PPTO balances are paid out at your regular hourly rate.12Walmart. Protected PTO Associate Guide
What Part-Time Associates Don’t Get
Some benefits full-time hourly associates receive are simply off the table for part-timers. The company’s plan documents list four main exclusions:1Walmart. 2026 Associate Benefits Book – Summary Plan Descriptions
- Company-paid basic life insurance, which full-time associates get automatically.
- Short-term and long-term disability plans. If you transfer from full-time to part-time, existing disability coverage ends at the close of the pay period when the transfer takes effect.
- Spouse or domestic partner coverage on health, dental, and vision plans.
- Paid parental leave, which is limited to salaried, truck driver, and full-time hourly associates.
If any of these matter to your situation, the only route to them through Walmart is moving to full-time status.
