Yes, minors do get tax refunds — but only if they file a return to claim one. When a teenager works a part-time or summer job, the employer typically withholds federal income tax from every paycheck. If the teen’s total earnings for the year come in below the filing threshold (for 2026, that’s $16,100 in wages for a dependent), no federal income tax is actually owed, and every dollar withheld is sitting with the IRS as an overpayment.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 The IRS does not send that money back on its own. A return has to be filed first.
Why Teens End Up Owed a Refund
Payroll systems calculate withholding as if the employee will work at that pay rate for the full year. A teenager earning $15 an hour for a few months in the summer might have federal tax withheld at a rate that assumes annual earnings of $30,000 or more. When the real annual total comes in around $4,000, the tax owed is zero and the withheld amount is fully refundable.
The exact figure withheld appears in Box 2 of the W-2 the employer sends in January.2Internal Revenue Service. Form W-2 – Wage and Tax Statement That’s the number the teen is trying to recover.
How To Claim the Refund
The minor files Form 1040, the same return adults file.3Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return Most teen returns only need a few lines: wages from the W-2, the withheld amount, and a check in the box indicating that someone else (a parent) can claim the filer as a dependent. Filing a return does not stop a parent from claiming the child as a dependent — dependency turns on age, relationship, and support, not on whether the child filed.4Internal Revenue Service. Documents to gather before starting:
- Social Security number
- Form W-2 from each employer (due to the employee by January 31)5Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement

There is a hard deadline for claiming a refund. Federal law gives taxpayers three years from the original return due date to file and collect a refund.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund A minor who doesn’t file for 2026 has until April 2030 to submit a return. After that, the money is forfeited to the Treasury permanently.
Social Security and Medicare Are Not Refundable
The refund only covers federal income tax withholding. Social Security tax (6.2% of wages) and Medicare tax (1.45%) also come out of every paycheck, and those amounts are not refundable through a tax return regardless of how little the minor earned. FICA applies from the first dollar of wages with no age or income exemption.
One narrow exception: students employed by the school, college, or university where they are actively enrolled may qualify for a FICA exemption on those specific wages under IRC Section 3121(b)(10).9Internal Revenue Service. Student FICA Exception That applies only to work performed for the school itself, not for an outside employer operating on campus.
How To Stop Over-Withholding Next Time
A minor who had no federal income tax liability last year and expects none this year can claim exempt status on Form W-4 when starting a job. Checking the “Exempt from withholding” box tells the employer to skip federal income tax withholding entirely, so the teen keeps more of each paycheck and doesn’t have to file a return later just to recover it.10Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 753, Form W-4, Employees Withholding Certificate
Both conditions are easy for most teens to meet. A first-time worker had no tax liability the prior year by definition, and a teen earning under $16,100 in 2026 will owe nothing. The exemption lasts one calendar year. To keep it in place, the minor has to submit a new W-4 claiming exempt status by February 15 of the following year.11Internal Revenue Service. Employees Withholding Certificate Social Security and Medicare still come out of each paycheck regardless of what the W-4 says.
When a Minor Is Actually Required To File
Even when no refund is at stake, some minors are legally obligated to file. For 2026, any one of these triggers creates a filing requirement:12Internal Revenue Service. Revenue Procedure 2025-32
- Earned income (wages, tips, salary) over $16,100
- Unearned income (interest, dividends, capital gains) over $1,350
- Self-employment net income of $400 or more from work like babysitting, lawn care, or freelancing13Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax
These thresholds are evaluated separately. A teenager earning $8,000 from a summer job and $1,400 in dividends has to file because the unearned income is over $1,350, even though the wages are well under $16,100. And a teen with $500 in babysitting profit is under the filing floor for wages but over the $400 self-employment threshold.
For minors below every threshold, filing is optional. Optional but often worth it: that’s exactly the situation where a refund is waiting.
How To File a Minor’s Tax Return
Signing the Return
A minor old enough to understand what they are signing can sign their own return. If the child is too young, a parent or legal guardian signs the child’s name followed by “By [parent’s signature], parent for minor child.”4Internal Revenue Service. Publication 501 – Dependents, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information The parent signs on the child’s behalf. This is the child’s return and it’s filed separately from the parent’s.
Free Filing Options
Most minors qualify for free tax preparation software through IRS Free File, available to taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less.14Internal Revenue Service. E-File: Do Your Taxes for Free Given the $16,100 filing threshold for dependents, virtually every teen who needs to file qualifies. IRS Free File Fillable Forms are available to anyone regardless of income for those comfortable preparing a return without guided software.15Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Tax Filing Season Opens With Several Free Filing Options Available
E-filing is the fastest route. The IRS processes electronically filed returns in about 21 days, with refunds sent by direct deposit or mailed check.16Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms Paper returns take six to eight weeks or longer. For a teen waiting on a few hundred dollars, that gap matters.
State Returns Are Separate
Roughly 40 states levy an individual income tax, and most set their own filing thresholds for dependents — often lower than the federal amounts. A minor who owes nothing to the IRS may still owe state tax or be due a state refund. Check the state’s department of revenue for the specific rules that apply.
