Do I Have to Freeze Credit With All Three Bureaus?

Yes. To actually protect yourself, you need to freeze your credit with all three bureaus separately: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Each one runs its own database and does not tell the others what you’ve done, so a freeze at one bureau leaves the other two files wide open. Federal law makes every freeze free, and none of them affect your credit score.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Freeze or Security Freeze on My Credit Report

Why One Freeze Isn’t Enough

Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion are competing private companies. When you freeze your file at one, the other two never hear about it and keep releasing your credit report to anyone with a permissible purpose.2TransUnion. Credit Freeze – Freeze My Credit

That gap matters because lenders don’t all use the same bureau. A bank might pull Equifax for a credit card application while a car dealer runs TransUnion. Most creditors won’t tell you which one they’ll check until after you’ve applied. An identity thief only needs one unfrozen file to open a fraudulent account. Freeze two out of three and you’ve left a working door open.3Experian. How to Freeze Your Credit at All 3 Credit Bureaus

What a Freeze Blocks and What It Doesn’t

A freeze stops new creditors from seeing your report, which effectively prevents anyone from opening new accounts in your name. While the freeze is on, you can’t open new credit either, and neither can someone pretending to be you.4Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts

It isn’t a total blackout, though. Federal law lets several categories of users see your report even when it’s frozen:5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts

  • Companies you already have accounts with, for account maintenance, credit line reviews, and collections.
  • Federal, state, and local government agencies acting under court orders or for tax and law enforcement purposes.
  • Agencies enforcing child support obligations.
  • Insurance companies underwriting a policy.
  • Employers and landlords running background checks with your permission.
  • Any credit monitoring service you’ve signed up for.
  • Prescreened credit and insurance offers (you opt out of those separately).

So a freeze is strong protection against new fraudulent accounts, but it won’t stop misuse of an existing account. You can still pull your own credit report anytime.

It’s Free, and It Won’t Touch Your Score

Placing, temporarily lifting, and permanently removing a freeze are all free at every bureau, and the freeze itself has no effect on your credit score. Scoring models don’t factor in whether a freeze exists.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What to Have Ready

Each bureau verifies your identity before placing the freeze. Have these on hand:

  • Your full legal name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Every address you’ve lived at in the past two years

Online and phone requests usually only need that information. If you go by mail, expect stricter documentation: a copy of a government-issued ID such as a driver’s license or passport, plus a recent utility bill, bank statement, or similar document showing your current address. Send copies, never originals.3Experian. How to Freeze Your Credit at All 3 Credit Bureaus

How to Place a Freeze at Each Bureau

Online is fastest, but you can also call or mail a written request. By law the bureau must place the freeze within one business day for online or phone requests, and within three business days for mailed requests.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts

  • TransUnion: transunion.com/credit-freeze; 800-916-8800; mailing address available through the freeze portal.2TransUnion. Credit Freeze – Freeze My Credit

After each freeze is placed, the bureau must send confirmation within five business days along with instructions for managing it later. Some issue a PIN; others use account-based login. Save whatever credentials you receive. You’ll need them to lift the freeze when you want new credit.

Lifting the Freeze When You Need Credit

When you apply for a loan or card, you’ll temporarily lift (sometimes called “thawing”) the freeze at whichever bureau the lender uses. Online or phone thaws must be processed within one hour; mailed requests within three business days.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts

Most bureau portals let you schedule the thaw for a specific date range. Some let you lift the freeze for a single creditor rather than everyone. Applying for a mortgage or auto loan? Ask the loan officer which bureau they’ll pull so you only thaw that one. Permanent removal works the same way and leaves your file open indefinitely.

If you’ve lost your PIN or login, contact the bureau directly. Experian no longer uses a PIN at all and lets you toggle the freeze from your account.6Experian. Replacing a Lost Security Freeze PIN Number Equifax and TransUnion each have identity verification processes to restore access, which can take longer than a routine thaw.

The Big Three Aren’t the Only Bureaus

Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion get the most attention, but other consumer reporting agencies exist and identity thieves know about them. Adding freezes at these closes gaps the big three don’t cover.

  • ChexSystems: Banks check ChexSystems when you apply for a checking or savings account. Without a freeze here, someone could open bank accounts in your name even with all three major bureaus locked down.7ChexSystems. Security Freeze Information
  • Innovis: A lesser-known fourth credit bureau used by some lenders and insurers. Freezing your Innovis file is free.8Innovis. Security Freeze
  • National Consumer Telecom and Utilities Exchange (NCTUE): Holds data reported by telecom companies, pay TV providers, and utilities. A freeze here can stop someone from opening a fraudulent cell phone plan or utility account.

Freezing at all of them takes roughly 30 minutes total.

Freezing a Child’s or Dependent’s Credit

Children under 16 are increasingly targeted for identity theft because their clean files can go unmonitored for years. You can place a free freeze on a minor’s credit, but you’ll still need to contact each bureau separately.4Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts

Most children don’t have a credit file yet, so the bureau may need to create one before freezing it. Requirements vary, but generally you’ll provide:

  • The child’s birth certificate
  • The child’s Social Security card or a letter from the Social Security Administration
  • Your government-issued ID
  • Proof of your address
