Yes, you have to declare tutoring income for taxes. The IRS treats money from tutoring as earned income whether it arrives by cash, check, Venmo, or a platform deposit, and whether or not anyone sends you a tax form. If you tutor as your own boss and your net profit reaches $400 in a year, you must file a federal return and pay self-employment tax on those earnings.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6017 – Self-Employment Tax Returns
If you tutor through a center that sets your schedule, hands you materials, and issues a W-2, taxes come out of your paycheck automatically and most of what follows doesn’t apply to you.2Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement The rest of this article is for the independent tutor, meaning anyone who sets their own rates, picks their own students, and collects payment directly, including through platforms like Wyzant or Varsity Tutors.
When You Have to File
Two separate thresholds can force you to file. The first catches almost every serious tutor: if your net tutoring profit (what you earned minus what you spent on the business) hits $400 or more in the tax year, you must file a return and pay self-employment tax.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6017 – Self-Employment Tax Returns That figure is net, not gross. Earn $900 and spend $550 on workbooks and software, and your net is $350, below the trigger.
The second threshold is the ordinary filing requirement based on total gross income. For tax year 2025, a single filer under 65 must file when gross income from all sources reaches $15,750.3Internal Revenue Service. Check if You Need to File a Tax Return The number adjusts annually and differs for other filing statuses and ages.
Skipping a return you were required to file costs 5% of the unpaid tax per month, up to 25%.4Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty The income is taxable whether or not anyone reports it to the IRS on your behalf.5Internal Revenue Service. Gig Economy Tax Center
What You’ll Owe: Self-Employment Tax
Self-employment tax covers Social Security and Medicare, the same taxes an employer would normally withhold and match. Working for yourself, you pay both halves. The combined rate is 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax
The rate applies to 92.35% of your net earnings, not the full amount. On $10,000 of net tutoring profit, the taxable base is $9,235, producing about $1,413 in self-employment tax.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax You can deduct half of the self-employment tax when calculating your adjusted gross income, which reduces the regular income tax you owe on top of it.
Regular federal income tax applies as well, at your ordinary bracket, and it stacks on top of self-employment tax. A rough working figure many tutors use for tax reserve is 25% to 30% of net profit, adjusted for your state and bracket.
The Forms Involved
Self-employed tutors report income and expenses on Schedule C, which attaches to Form 1040. Gross receipts go on Line 1, deductible business expenses come off, and the resulting net profit flows to Schedule SE, where self-employment tax is figured.
Form 1099-NEC
Starting with tax year 2026, any single business client that pays you $2,000 or more must send you a Form 1099-NEC.7Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-NEC and Independent Contractors The threshold was $600 through 2025. Individual families who hire you directly are not required to send a 1099 at all, because they’re paying for a personal service rather than operating a business. You still owe tax on what they pay you.
Form 1099-K
If parents pay you through Venmo, PayPal, or similar apps, the platform issues a Form 1099-K when your business payments exceed $20,000 across more than 200 transactions in 2026.8Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K Personal transfers and gifts don’t count and shouldn’t appear on a 1099-K, so ask families to mark tutoring payments as business transactions to keep your platform records aligned with what you’ll report.
Deductions That Lower Your Tax
Every dollar of legitimate business expense you record reduces both your income tax and your self-employment tax. Tutors often skip small expenses because they seem too minor to bother with. They add up. Deductible items typically include workbooks, printing, online tutoring platform fees, educational software, advertising, and continuing education in subjects you teach.
Home Office
A space in your home used exclusively and regularly for tutoring can qualify for the home office deduction.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 509, Business Use of Home Exclusive is the strict word: a corner of the kitchen table where you also eat doesn’t qualify; a spare room set up for sessions does. The simplified method allows $5 per square foot up to 300 square feet, capping the deduction at $1,500.10Internal Revenue Service. Simplified Option for Home Office Deduction The regular method on Form 8829 uses the actual business percentage of your home and can produce a larger deduction, with more paperwork.
Mileage
Driving to a student’s home or to a library session is deductible. The standard mileage rate for 2026 is 72.5 cents per mile.11Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Standard Mileage Rates You need a contemporaneous log with the date, starting point, destination, business purpose, and miles for each trip. “Drove to student” won’t survive an audit; “March 15 — 123 Main St to 456 Oak Ave, 12.4 miles, algebra session with J. Smith” will. Apps like MileIQ or Everlance record trips automatically.
Paying Quarterly
Because no one withholds tax from your tutoring pay, the IRS expects payment across the year. If you’ll owe $1,000 or more in federal tax after credits and withholding, you must make quarterly estimated payments on Form 1040-ES.12Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes The 2026 due dates:
- April 15, 2026, for income earned January through March
- June 15, 2026, for April and May
- September 15, 2026, for June through August
- January 15, 2027, for September through December
Miss a deadline and the IRS charges an underpayment penalty calculated quarter by quarter, so paying late on one installment still costs you even if the others are on time.13Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Form 1040-ES Instructions IRS Direct Pay handles bank transfers for free. If you also have a W-2 job, an alternative is filing a new Form W-4 to increase withholding there; the IRS accepts the money whichever way it arrives.
Filing Day
Form 1040 with Schedule C and Schedule SE is due April 15 of the year after the tax year.14Internal Revenue Service. When to File IRS Free File is available if your adjusted gross income is $89,000 or below, and Free File Fillable Forms work at any income.15Internal Revenue Service. File Your Tax Return A six-month extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay: any balance owed still accrues interest after April 15.
Keep Your Records
Save receipts, bank statements, mileage logs, and any 1099 forms for at least three years after you file.16Internal Revenue Service. How Long Should I Keep Records Scanned copies are fine. Without a clear paper trail linking each deduction to a business purpose, the IRS can disallow the deduction outright and bill you for the back tax plus interest.
If You Missed a Year
Tutors who realize partway through their career that they should have been reporting income are a common story. If you’ve filed all required returns and had no penalties in the three prior tax years, you may qualify for first-time penalty abatement, which waives certain penalties.17Internal Revenue Service. Administrative Penalty Relief It doesn’t erase interest, and the failure-to-pay penalty keeps running until the balance clears, but it can meaningfully cut a first-time bill.
Don’t Forget State Tax
Most states tax self-employment income too, at rates that range from around 1% to over 13%. A few states levy no income tax at all. Some require their own quarterly estimated payments on schedules that may or may not match the federal dates. Check your state tax agency’s site for the forms and deadlines, because state underpayment penalties stack on top of the federal ones.
