Do Hard Inquiries Go Away? Two-Year Timeline and Disputes

Hard inquiries do go away on their own. Each one drops off your credit report automatically two years after the lender pulled your file, and it stops affecting most credit scores well before that. You don’t have to call anyone or file anything for the routine removal to happen. The one situation where you can act sooner is an inquiry you never authorized, which you can dispute with the credit bureaus and potentially get erased before the 24-month clock runs out.

The Two-Year Automatic Removal

A hard inquiry is the record a credit bureau creates when a lender checks your report as part of a lending decision, usually after you apply for a credit card, mortgage, auto loan, or personal loan.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Inquiry? The entry stays on your report for two years from the date of that request. After 24 months, the bureau removes it automatically. There is no form to submit and no call to make.

When Hard Inquiries Stop Affecting Your Score

The scoring impact is shorter than the reporting window. Under the FICO model, a hard inquiry only factors into your score for 12 months, even though it stays visible on your report for another year after that.2myFICO. Does Checking Your Credit Score Lower It VantageScore can count inquiries for up to 24 months, though the effect fades within a few months for most people.

A single hard inquiry typically lowers a FICO score by fewer than five points.2myFICO. Does Checking Your Credit Score Lower It The hit can be larger if you have a thin credit file with few accounts or a short history.

Rate Shopping Counts as One Inquiry

If you’re comparing offers from several lenders for the same loan, the scoring models group those pulls together. Mortgage inquiries within a 45-day window count as a single inquiry for scoring purposes.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Happens When a Mortgage Lender Checks My Credit? Auto loans work similarly, with a shopping window that ranges from 14 to 45 days depending on the scoring model version.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Will Shopping for an Auto Loan Affect My Credit? Keeping all your rate-shopping applications inside a two-week span is the safest approach.

The rate-shopping protection only covers inquiries for the same type of loan. A credit card application, an auto loan application, and a personal loan application in the same month generate three separate inquiries that each count on their own. Spacing different applications out helps when you plan to apply for several kinds of credit.

Soft Inquiries Don’t Need to Be Removed

Not every check on your credit is a hard inquiry. Soft inquiries happen when someone reviews your file for a purpose other than a lending decision you initiated: an employer running a background check, an insurance company reviewing your file, a lender prescreening you for a promotional offer, or you checking your own report.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Inquiry? Soft inquiries do not affect your score, and only you can see them on your own report. Other lenders can’t. If you spot an unfamiliar name under the soft-inquiry section, there is nothing to dispute.

When You Can Get a Hard Inquiry Removed Early

A lender is only allowed to pull your credit report if it has what the Fair Credit Reporting Act calls a “permissible purpose.” The most common permissible purpose is a credit transaction you started, like applying for a loan or credit card. Reviewing an existing account or handling a business transaction you initiated, such as setting up a utility, also qualifies.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports

Any hard inquiry that shows up without a permissible purpose is unauthorized. It might come from a clerical error, duplicate reporting, or identity theft. A company that pulls your report without a valid reason may be violating federal law.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports Legitimate inquiries you did authorize cannot be removed early. They have to run out the two-year clock.

How to Dispute an Unauthorized Inquiry

Start by getting a copy of your credit report showing the inquiry you want to challenge. Free weekly reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion are available through AnnualCreditReport.com, the only site authorized by federal law for this purpose.6AnnualCreditReport.com. Your Rights

Note the name of the company that made the inquiry, the exact date of the pull, and any reference numbers listed with the entry. Write a clear statement that you did not apply for credit or services with that company and did not authorize anyone else to pull your report.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. File With Each Bureau

Submit the dispute to every credit bureau that lists the unauthorized inquiry. You can file online, by phone, or by mail:

  • Equifax: equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services/credit-dispute or (866) 349-5191.
  • Experian: experian.com/disputes/main.html or (888) 397-3742.

What the Bureau Does Next

The bureau has 30 days to investigate once it receives your dispute.9FTC. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports It contacts the company that ran the inquiry and asks it to verify that it had a legal right to access your file. If the company cannot show a permissible purpose, or does not respond, the bureau has to remove the inquiry.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Dispute an Error on My Credit Report? Submitting additional information mid-investigation can extend the timeline to 45 days. You’ll get the outcome in writing or through the bureau’s online portal, with an updated copy of your report.

If the Bureau Won’t Remove It

If the bureau concludes the inquiry is valid and leaves it on your report, you can ask that a brief statement of dispute be added to your file. It will appear whenever someone pulls your report.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Dispute an Error on My Credit Report?

You can also file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov/complaint or by calling (855) 411-2372. The Fair Credit Reporting Act also gives you a private right to sue. For a willful violation, you can recover statutory damages between $100 and $1,000 per violation without proving actual financial harm, and a court may award punitive damages and attorney’s fees. If someone obtained your report under false pretenses or knowingly without a permissible purpose, the minimum recovery is $1,000 or your actual damages, whichever is greater.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681n – Civil Liability for Willful Noncompliance

Stop Future Unauthorized Inquiries With a Freeze

A credit freeze blocks new creditors from accessing your report, which prevents unauthorized inquiries before they ever appear. Placing and lifting a freeze is free, does not affect your credit score, and stays in place until you remove it.12FTC. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts You don’t have to be an identity theft victim to freeze your credit. Anyone can do it at any time.

Contact each of the three credit bureaus individually to set up a freeze. When you want to apply for a new loan, credit card, apartment, or job that requires a credit check, you can lift the freeze temporarily and put it back afterward. If you’ve already had to fight an unauthorized inquiry, a freeze is one of the strongest safeguards against it happening again.12FTC. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts
