Yes — day traders generally do pay quarterly taxes. Brokerages do not withhold anything when you close a position, so if you expect to owe at least $1,000 in federal tax for the year after any withholding and refundable credits, the IRS requires you to send estimated payments four times a year.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax Miss that obligation and the IRS charges an underpayment penalty when you file your annual return.
When You’re Required to Pay
The trigger is a projected federal tax bill of $1,000 or more after subtracting withholding and refundable credits.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax Day traders hit that threshold fast. A few thousand dollars in net short-term gains, with no employer withholding to offset it, easily produces a $1,000 liability. If you also earn W-2 wages, your paycheck withholding counts toward the threshold, so the real question is whether that withholding alone covers what you owe on your combined income.
Even above the threshold, you can avoid penalties by meeting one of two safe harbors:
- Pay at least 90 percent of the total tax you end up owing for the current year, or
- Pay at least 100 percent of the total tax shown on last year’s return, as long as that return covered a full 12 months.
If your adjusted gross income in the prior year exceeded $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately), the prior-year safe harbor rises to 110 percent of last year’s tax.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax Many active traders prefer the prior-year safe harbor because it locks in a known number, no matter how this year’s results swing.
The Four Deadlines
The IRS splits the year into four unequal payment periods, each with its own due date:2Internal Revenue Service. When to Pay Estimated Tax
- January 1 through March 31: payment due April 15
- April 1 through May 31: payment due June 15
- June 1 through August 31: payment due September 15
- September 1 through December 31: payment due January 15 of the following year
When a deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, a payment made on the next business day counts as on time.3Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes The IRS uses the postmark date for mailed payments. If you pay through EFTPS, schedule the payment by 8:00 p.m. Eastern the day before the due date.4EFTPS. Welcome to EFTPS Online
How to Figure the Amount
Form 1040-ES contains an Estimated Tax Worksheet that walks the calculation line by line. You need last year’s Form 1040 for the safe harbor figures and your year-to-date trading records showing realized gains and losses.5IRS.gov. Form 1040-ES – 2026 You project your annual income, subtract deductions and credits, arrive at an estimated total tax, divide by four, and subtract any withholding you expect. What’s left is your quarterly payment. You don’t file the worksheet; keep it with your records.
A few things to get right when you plug in the numbers:
Use ordinary income rates. Most day trading gains are short-term capital gains because you held the position for a year or less. The IRS taxes short-term gains at ordinary income rates, which run from 10 percent up to 37 percent for 2026.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 409, Capital Gains and Losses Active trading can push your total income through several brackets in one year, and underestimating your marginal rate is one of the most common mistakes traders make.5IRS.gov. Form 1040-ES – 2026
Add the Net Investment Income Tax if it applies. Higher-earning traders owe an extra 3.8 percent on the lesser of net investment income or the amount by which modified adjusted gross income exceeds $200,000 for single filers ($250,000 for married couples filing jointly).7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1411 – Imposition of Tax Day trading profits count as net investment income.8Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 559, Net Investment Income Tax These thresholds aren’t indexed for inflation, so growing profits can push you across the line.
Don’t add self-employment tax. Whether the IRS treats you as a trader or as an investor, gains from selling securities are not subject to the 15.3 percent self-employment tax that applies to other business income.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 429, Traders in Securities Only dealers, who maintain inventory and sell to customers, owe it. Your quarterly estimate covers income tax and possibly NIIT, but not SE tax on trading gains.
When Your Income Isn’t Even Across the Year
The standard calculation assumes your income comes in evenly, which rarely matches how trading actually works. If you earn most of your profits later in the year, the annualized income installment method lets you base each quarter’s required payment on the income you had actually earned through that period instead of dividing the full-year estimate by four.10Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2210 That can significantly reduce your first- and second-quarter payments when early months are slow. To use it, you complete Schedule AI on Form 2210 when you file your annual return, showing the IRS that your lower early payments matched your lower early income. The cost is more bookkeeping: you need precise income totals through March 31, May 31, August 31, and December 31.
Wash Sales Will Distort Your Numbers
A wash sale happens when you sell a security at a loss and buy a substantially identical security within 30 days before or after that sale.11Internal Revenue Service. Publication 550 – Investment Income and Expenses The loss is disallowed and instead added to the cost basis of the replacement shares, deferring the tax benefit until you eventually sell those replacement shares in a non-wash-sale transaction.
Day traders trigger wash sales constantly because they trade the same tickers over and over. The consequence for quarterly estimates: your taxable gain for a period can be much larger than your actual economic profit, because losses you expected to deduct are deferred. When you calculate a payment, pull your brokerage’s adjusted gain and loss figures, which already reflect wash sale disallowances, rather than your raw profit-and-loss totals. Counting deferred losses as if they were deductible is one of the fastest ways to underpay and land a penalty.
How to Send the Payment
Once you know the amount, you have a few ways to pay:
- IRS Direct Pay: a free online portal that pulls funds from your checking or savings account. No registration required. Select “Estimated Tax” as the payment type, enter your bank details, and save the confirmation number.12Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help
- EFTPS: requires one-time enrollment, which can take up to five business days. Once you’re set up, you can schedule payments up to 365 days ahead and review 15 months of payment history. Traders making large or frequent payments often prefer it for the scheduling and recordkeeping.13Internal Revenue Service. EFTPS: The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System
- Mail: send a check or money order with the payment voucher from Form 1040-ES. Write your Social Security number on the payment. Postmark date controls whether it’s timely.
Keep the confirmation number or the receipt. If the IRS later says a payment never arrived, that’s your proof.
If You Underpay
The penalty for underpaying isn’t a flat fine. It works like an interest charge on the shortfall for each day it stays unpaid.14Internal Revenue Service. Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty The rate resets quarterly at the federal short-term rate plus three points; for the first quarter of 2026 it’s 7 percent, compounded daily.15Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates Interest accrues separately for each installment period, so a first-quarter shortfall costs more than a fourth-quarter one because it sits unpaid longer.
The IRS will waive all or part of the penalty in limited situations. If your underpayment stemmed from a federally declared disaster, relief is usually applied automatically based on your address, and you generally don’t need to file Form 2210.16IRS.gov. Instructions for Form 2210 For other casualties or unusual circumstances, attach documentation such as police or insurance reports. If you retired after reaching age 62 or became disabled during the tax year or the prior year and the underpayment had reasonable cause, the IRS may waive the penalty when you submit documentation of your retirement date and age or the date you became disabled. Waivers are requested on Form 2210.
Adjusting Mid-Year
Trading income is volatile and the IRS expects your estimates to move with it. If you overestimated early in the year, fill out a fresh Form 1040-ES worksheet and reduce your next payment.3Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes If a strong quarter pushes your projected income above what you first assumed, recalculate and increase the next payment so you stay inside a safe harbor. Traders using the prior-year safe harbor skip this exercise entirely, because their required payment is fixed regardless of what happens in the current year.
State Payments Are Separate
Federal is only half the story. Most states with an income tax have their own estimated payment rules, and both the minimum thresholds and the deadlines vary. State underpayment penalties operate independently of any federal penalty. If you trade from a state that taxes investment income, check your state tax agency’s website for its specific thresholds, deadlines, and forms.
