Do Churches Qualify for QCDs? Eligibility, RMD Rules, and Reporting

Yes — churches qualify for QCDs, and they do so automatically. A Qualified Charitable Distribution sent directly from your IRA to your church counts as an eligible gift under the same federal rules that govern gifts to any public charity, and the church doesn’t need an IRS determination letter or any special approval for you to use one.1Internal Revenue Service. Why Churches Are Automatically Eligible

The QCD statute requires the money to go to an organization described in Internal Revenue Code Section 170(b)(1)(A). Churches, synagogues, mosques, and other houses of worship are named at the top of that list.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 170 – Charitable, Etc., Contributions and Gifts Churches also occupy an unusual position under Section 501(c)(3): they’re treated as tax-exempt without having to apply for recognition. A church that never filed for a determination letter can still receive tax-deductible gifts, and QCDs work the same way.1Internal Revenue Service. Churches, Integrated Auxiliaries and Conventions or Associations of Churches

Larger denominational offices and conventions or associations of churches qualify on the same footing. The only place to pause is if an organization calls itself a church but the IRS has it classified as something else, or its exempt status has lapsed for failure to file. Even then, if the organization genuinely meets the requirements of a church under Section 501(c)(3), it remains eligible.1Internal Revenue Service. A few structures are explicitly excluded from receiving QCDs: donor-advised funds, supporting organizations, and private foundations. If your church happens to run a donor-advised fund program on the side, the QCD check has to be payable to the church itself, not into a DAF account.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 408 – Individual Retirement Accounts

Who Can Make a QCD to a Church

You must be at least 70½ years old on the date the money leaves your IRA. Not the year you turn 70½ — the actual half-birthday has to be behind you before the transfer happens.4Internal Revenue Service. Seniors Can Reduce Their Tax Burden by Donating to Charity Through Their IRA

Traditional IRAs and Inherited IRAs are eligible. SEP IRAs and SIMPLE IRAs work only if they’re inactive, meaning no employer contributions are being made during the year of the distribution; an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE cannot be used.5Fidelity Charitable. Qualified Charitable Distribution6Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Publication 590-B Roth IRAs technically allow QCDs, but since Roth distributions are already generally tax-free, there’s little practical reason to use one.

The annual limit for 2026 is $111,000 per person, up from $108,000 in 2025.7Fidelity. Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) | Planning Your IRA Withdrawal Spouses each get their own cap, so a married couple with separate IRAs can move up to $222,000 combined. The cap is per person across all your IRAs, so if you own more than one account, keep a running total. Any amount over the limit is treated as ordinary taxable income; you can still try to itemize the excess as a charitable deduction, but you lose the QCD’s core advantage of keeping the money out of your adjusted gross income.

One wrinkle for anyone whose Traditional IRA holds after-tax (non-deductible) contributions: a QCD is drawn first from the taxable portion of the account. The after-tax basis stays put until the taxable portion is exhausted. For most retirees whose IRAs are entirely pre-tax, this isn’t an issue, but if you’ve made non-deductible contributions over the years, run the numbers with a tax preparer.

How a QCD Interacts With Your Required Minimum Distribution

If you’re 73 or older and subject to Required Minimum Distributions, a QCD counts dollar-for-dollar toward the RMD.8Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Plan and IRA Required Minimum Distributions FAQs Send $30,000 from your IRA to your church as a QCD, and a $30,000 RMD is satisfied without a dollar of it landing in your taxable income.

Notice the age gap. QCDs start at 70½; RMDs don’t begin until 73. That window lets you shrink the IRA balance before required distributions ever kick in, which can lower the RMDs you’ll eventually have to take.

Two limits to keep in mind. Each year’s RMD has to be met within that calendar year — a QCD larger than this year’s RMD does not carry forward to reduce next year’s.7Fidelity. Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) | Planning Your IRA Withdrawal And if your RMD is larger than the $111,000 QCD cap, the excess has to come out as a regular taxable distribution.

Church Payments That Don’t Count as QCDs

A QCD has to be a pure gift. If you get anything of value back, the whole transaction fails. This catches more people than expected around church activities. Tuition at a church-affiliated school doesn’t qualify, even when the school sits under the church’s umbrella. Dinner tickets to a church fundraiser, raffle entries, golf tournament fees, benefit concert admissions — all disqualified because they hand you something in return.9Internal Revenue Service. Charitable Contributions

Regular tithes, general offerings, and designated gifts to church ministries such as missions, building funds, or benevolence programs are fine because you receive nothing tangible in return. The acknowledgment letter should include the phrase “no goods or services were provided in exchange for this contribution.”

Sending the Money to Your Church

Before calling your IRA custodian, gather these details from the church office:

  • The full legal name the check should be made payable to. This may be more formal than the name on the sign, for example “First Baptist Church of Springfield, Inc.”
  • The mailing address where the custodian should send the check.
  • The church’s Employer Identification Number, the nine-digit federal tax ID the treasurer will have on file.
  • Your gift designation — general fund, building campaign, missions, or another specific ministry.

Your custodian will have you fill out a distribution request form (sometimes called a QCD authorization form) specifying the payee, the amount, and that the distribution is a QCD. Some custodians handle it by phone; others want a written or online submission.

Once submitted, the custodian either mails a check directly to the church or sends an electronic transfer. A few custodians mail the check to you, made payable to the church. If that happens, forward it to the church without depositing it. The check cannot pass through your personal account, or the IRS won’t treat it as a QCD.5Fidelity Charitable. Qualified Charitable Distribution

Timing matters. The funds have to leave your IRA by December 31 to count for that tax year. Processing can take a week or more at the custodian, and the mail adds days on top. If you’re using the QCD to satisfy an RMD, don’t wait until mid-December. Early November is a safer target.

Get a Written Acknowledgment

For any QCD of $250 or more, get a written acknowledgment from the church confirming the amount, the date, and that no goods or services were provided in exchange. This is the same acknowledgment rule that applies to every charitable contribution at or above $250.10Internal Revenue Service. Charitable Contributions: Written Acknowledgments Keep the letter with your tax records; if the IRS questions the distribution, it’s your first line of defense.

How to Report the QCD on Your Tax Return

After year-end, your IRA custodian issues Form 1099-R showing the total distributed from your IRA. The form doesn’t flag which part was a QCD — it just reports the gross amount.11Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1099-R, Distributions From Pensions, Annuities, Retirement or Profit-Sharing Plans, IRAs, Insurance Contracts, Etc. Reporting it correctly is on you.

On Form 1040, enter the total distribution on line 4a. If the whole distribution was a QCD, enter zero on line 4b and check box 2 on line 4c to indicate a qualified charitable distribution. If only part was a QCD, enter the non-QCD portion on line 4b.12Internal Revenue Service. 1040 (2025) Instructions You cannot also claim a charitable contribution deduction for the same dollars excluded as a QCD; the exclusion from income is the benefit, not a deduction stacked on top.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 408 – Individual Retirement Accounts

If your IRA contains non-deductible contributions and you took other distributions in the same year, you’ll also need Form 8606 to sort out the taxable and nontaxable portions.4Internal Revenue Service. Seniors Can Reduce Their Tax Burden by Donating to Charity Through Their IRA
