Bank transfers generally do not go through on weekends. The interbank systems that move money between different banks — ACH and Fedwire — run Monday through Friday and shut down on Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays, so a transfer you start Friday night or over the weekend usually won’t settle until Monday. The exceptions are transfers between two accounts at the same bank, payments through Zelle, and payments sent over the newer FedNow and RTP instant-payment networks, all of which move on weekends.

Transfers Between Your Own Accounts
Moving money from savings to checking at the same bank posts right away, even on Saturday night. The bank is just updating its own ledger, so no outside network has to clear anything.1Bank of America. Cutoff Times for Deposits, Transfers and Payments The balance is spendable immediately, though the transaction date in your history may show the next business day. That’s a display detail, not a hold.
Some banks still cap how often you can move money between accounts under their own rules, so a heavy weekend of internal transfers can occasionally hit a limit.
Why ACH Transfers Stall Over the Weekend
ACH is the network behind direct deposit, most online bill payments, and the standard “transfer to external bank” feature. Payments travel in batches, and settlement runs through the Federal Reserve, which is closed on weekends and federal holidays.2Nacha. The ABCs of ACH Nacha, the network’s governing body, estimates about 80 percent of ACH payments settle within one banking day.3Nacha. How ACH Payments Work
A transfer you initiate Friday evening won’t start processing until Monday. If Monday is a federal holiday, processing begins Tuesday.
Same-Day ACH exists for payments up to $1 million per transaction, with the last daily window closing at 4:45 p.m. ET.4Nacha. Wire Transfers and Fedwire Hours
Domestic wires move through the Fedwire Funds Service, run by the Federal Reserve. Fedwire currently operates from 9:00 p.m. ET to 7:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, excluding Federal Reserve holidays.6Federal Reserve Board. Expansion of Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours It does not run on weekends. Any domestic wire you request Saturday or Sunday will wait for Monday morning.
Each bank also sets its own daily cutoff. At Wells Fargo, for example, domestic wires cut off at 3:00 p.m. PT and international wires at 2:20 p.m. PT.7Wells Fargo. Digital Wires FAQs Miss the cutoff, and the wire goes out the next business day. Domestic outgoing wire fees typically run $25 to $30; international wires often cost $45 or more.8Bank of America. One thing worth knowing before you send: once a wire is released, it’s generally final and cannot be reversed. Confirm the recipient’s account information carefully.
International wires add more time. They usually travel through the SWIFT messaging network and may pass through intermediary banks along the way, each adding processing time and often a fee. Depending on the destination country and currency, an international wire can take one to five business days, sometimes longer.8Bank of America. FedNow and RTP: The Weekend Exceptions
Two newer networks do run on weekends. The RTP network, operated by The Clearing House, and the FedNow Service, operated by the Federal Reserve, both process transfers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.9Federal Reserve Bank Services. FedNow Service Operating Hours Settlement happens in seconds, and banks that participate in RTP must make funds available to the recipient immediately upon receiving the payment message, with limited exceptions.10The Clearing House. Payment Apps on Weekends
Zelle is built into many bank apps and typically delivers money within minutes to an enrolled recipient, weekends included. Funds land directly in the recipient’s bank account. If the recipient hasn’t enrolled, delivery may take one to three business days after they sign up.
Venmo and Cash App handle it differently. A standard transfer from your app balance to your bank account is free but rides ACH, so it takes one to three business days and weekends don’t count. Both offer an instant option for a fee, which sends the money to a linked debit card rather than through ACH:
- Venmo instant transfer: 1.75% of the amount, minimum $0.25, maximum $25.
- Cash App instant transfer: 0.5% to 2.5% of the amount, minimum $0.25 to $1, maximum $75.13Cash App. Withdrawal Transfer Speed Options
Instant transfers are usually available within minutes, any day.
When a Payment Due Date Falls on a Weekend
If you’re worried less about moving money and more about missing a deadline, some rules protect you.
The IRS treats a federal tax deadline that falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday as due on the next business day, for both returns and deposits.14Internal Revenue Service. Employment Tax Due Dates
For credit card and mortgage bills, Regulation Z says that if the creditor doesn’t accept mailed payments on the due date, a payment received the next business day generally cannot be treated as late.15Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation Z – 1026.10 Payments The protection applies to mailed payments. If the lender accepts online or phone payments on Sunday, paying Monday can still be counted late, so check how the creditor takes weekend payments.
Payroll usually works in the employee’s favor by industry practice: when payday falls on a weekend or holiday, employers typically pay the preceding Friday rather than the following Monday.2Nacha. The ABCs of ACH
What’s Changing
Federal banking regulations define a “business day” as any calendar day other than a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, and the main settlement systems follow that calendar.16eCFR. 12 CFR 229.2 – Definitions (Regulation CC) The Federal Reserve has proposed expanding Fedwire to a 22-hours-per-day, six-days-per-week schedule, but that change isn’t expected until 2028 or 2029.6Federal Reserve Board. Expansion of Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours
Until then: if you need money to arrive over the weekend, use an internal transfer at the same bank, send it through Zelle, or check whether both banks support FedNow or RTP. For anything routed through ACH or Fedwire, plan on at least one business day of processing once Monday arrives.
