Yes, a car rental deposit is standard practice. Almost every rental company places a temporary hold on your credit or debit card when you pick up the vehicle, typically starting around $200 and sometimes topping $500, depending on your payment method, the car class, and the company’s own rules.1Federal Trade Commission. Renting a Car The money isn’t gone, but it isn’t yours to spend either until the rental closes out.
What the Hold Actually Is
The “deposit” at a rental counter is really an authorization hold, not a charge. The company blocks an amount larger than your expected bill so there’s enough credit or cash available to cover extras like fuel, tolls, or late fees. If you return the car as agreed, nothing beyond your actual charges gets processed.1Federal Trade Commission. Renting a Car
The practical difference between a hold and a charge matters most for debit cards. On a credit card, the hold reduces your available credit for a few days. On a debit card, the hold locks up real money in your checking account, and you can’t use those funds for anything else until the block clears. If your credit limit is tight or your bank balance is low, the hold can cause other transactions to be declined.1Federal Trade Commission. Renting a Car
How Much to Expect by Company
Most agencies calculate the hold as your estimated rental total plus a fixed buffer for incidentals. The buffer varies:
- Budget on a credit card: estimated rental charges plus 25% or $200, whichever is greater.2Budget Rent A Car. Requirements for Renting
- Budget on prepaid or debit: a $250 authorization hold on top of the prepaid amount, with a $100 minimum for prepaid and insurance-replacement rentals. Select locations in the Northeast and North Central regions set the minimum authorization at $500.2Budget Rent A Car. Requirements for Renting
- Hertz: up to $200 on credit cards or up to $500 on debit cards, plus the estimated rental charges.3Hertz. Reservation Policy
- Avis pay-now reservations: the full rental amount plus a $250 minimum hold, applied to both credit and debit cards.4Avis Rent a Car. How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Car
Airport locations often apply higher incidental buffers than neighborhood branches. Before you leave for the counter, pull up your estimated total and make sure the card you’re bringing has enough available credit or balance to cover both the rental and the buffer on top.
Credit Card vs. Debit Card at Pickup
A credit card is the smoothest way through. The agency reduces your available credit, no cash moves, and you need a valid driver’s license matching the name on the card.5Budget Rent A Car. What Do You Need to Pick Up Your Rental Car Some locations also want the card’s expiration date to extend past your return, with a buffer up to 30 days common at stricter branches.
Debit cards come with more friction. At Enterprise airport locations, a debit card is only accepted at the time of rental if you also show a ticketed return travel itinerary.6Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Your account balance has to cover the full estimated rental plus the hold, or the transaction will be declined. If the hold pushes your balance below zero, you’re on the hook for the overdraft fees.6Enterprise Rent-A-Car. What Forms of Payment Are Accepted for Renting a Car in the United States
What Pushes Your Hold Higher
Vehicle Class and Rental Length
Economy cars carry lower holds. Luxury vehicles and full-size SUVs push the number up because they cost more to repair or replace. Length matters too: the agency multiplies the daily rate across your full rental period and then adds the incidental buffer, so a week-long rental ties up noticeably more than a weekend.
Declining the Damage Waiver
Rental companies sell a Collision Damage Waiver or Loss Damage Waiver that limits your liability for damage to the car. If you decline it and plan to rely on personal auto insurance or a credit card benefit, the agency may size the hold as if you had no coverage at all. From the company’s point of view, your personal coverage reimburses you after the fact; it doesn’t stop them from pursuing you for damages.
Being Under 25
Renters between 21 and 24 face a daily surcharge at most major agencies. Budget charges $27 per day at most U.S. corporate-operated locations for this age group, and across the industry surcharges generally run from $20 to $35 per day, with certain markets higher. Young renters also face vehicle restrictions. Budget doesn’t allow renters under 25 to book luxury cars, minivans, 12-passenger vans, or premium SUVs. Budget also won’t let under-25 renters use a debit card at corporate-operated locations, so a credit card is usually required.2Budget Rent A Car. Requirements for Renting A few programs waive the surcharge: Hertz drops it entirely for AAA members between 20 and 24.8Hertz. Young Renter Travel Deals
Renting Close to Home
Some locations apply stricter rules to people who live near the pickup branch. A local address on your license can trigger a higher security hold, a credit card requirement even where debit is normally accepted, or a request for extra proof of residence. These policies vary by branch and often aren’t disclosed during online booking, so call ahead if you’re renting close to home.
International Renters
If you’re visiting the United States on a foreign license, you may need both your home-country license and an International Driving Permit to rent.9USAGov. Driving in the U.S. if You Are Not a Citizen Deposit requirements for international renters vary, and some agencies require a credit card issued by a bank in your home country.
Cards and Payment Methods That Won’t Work
Not everything that looks like a credit or debit card will clear the counter. Enterprise does not accept virtual credit cards, single-use card numbers, or prepaid cards without a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover logo. Gift cards carrying a major card logo can be used to pay at the end of the rental but are not accepted at pickup when the hold is placed.6Enterprise Rent-A-Car. What Forms of Payment Are Accepted for Renting a Car in the United States Similar restrictions apply across most major agencies.
Cash rentals exist but take planning. Dollar accepts cash only from customers who first obtain a Cash Deposit ID Card, which costs $15, involves a credit check, and takes about 30 days to process.10Dollar Rent A Car. How to Rent With a Debit Card That’s not a last-minute workaround.
Getting Your Money Back After Return
When you return the car and the inspection is done, the agency sends a release to your bank or card issuer. Enterprise says it releases the authorization immediately on return and only charges the final rental amount.11Enterprise Rent-A-Car. How Do Refunds Work With the Different Methods of Payment How quickly the funds actually appear in your account depends on your bank.
Credit card limits usually restore within a few business days. Debit card refunds take longer because the bank has to move real cash back into your available balance. Enterprise estimates 5 to 10 business days for debit refunds.11Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Save your final receipt. It shows the actual charges and confirms the hold should be released. If you paid by debit and the money hasn’t come back after 10 business days, call the branch where you rented and ask them to review the charges and trace the release.11Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Disputing Charges That Come Out of Your Hold
If the final bill includes charges you didn’t expect, start with the receipt. Fuel surcharges when the tank is returned less than full are typically billed well above local pump prices, and cleaning fees can be added for smoking or heavy soiling inside the car. Call the branch directly and have someone walk you through the bill. Most disputes are resolved at this stage.
If the branch won’t fix it, the FTC recommends reporting the problem to the company’s customer service department, to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and to your state attorney general’s office.1Federal Trade Commission. Renting a Car If you paid with a credit card, you can also file a chargeback through your card issuer. Before you do, pull together the final inspection report, the return receipt, and any photos you took of the car at pickup and return. Those records carry most of the weight if the company claims damage or fees you believe are unjustified.
