Yes. Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, ADA ramps require handrails on both sides whenever the ramp run rises more than 6 inches vertically. Below that threshold, the federal standard doesn’t require them. Above it, both sides need compliant rails that meet specific height, diameter, clearance, and extension rules.
The 6-Inch Rise Rule
Section 405.8 of the ADA Standards states it plainly: any ramp run with a rise greater than 6 inches needs handrails on both sides that comply with Section 505.1Access Board. Chapter 4: Ramps and Curb Ramps
“Rise” is the total vertical height the ramp gains from bottom to top. A ramp connecting a parking lot to a doorway sitting 8 inches higher has an 8-inch rise, so handrails are mandatory. A ramp that only climbs 5 inches sits below the threshold and doesn’t need them under the ADA, though handrails are still a sensible safety measure and your local code may require them anyway.
When the Rule Doesn’t Apply
Three situations change the answer, and it’s worth knowing them before you assume the 6-inch trigger settles your project.
Employee Work Areas

Curb Ramps

Assembly Aisle Ramps
Aisle ramps in theaters, stadiums, and other assembly areas get a relaxed rule rather than a full exemption. They need a handrail on at least one side, or somewhere within the aisle width, but not on both sides.1Access Board. Meeting the “both sides” rule isn’t enough on its own. Once handrails are required, they have to meet specific dimensions.
Height
The top of the gripping surface sits between 34 and 38 inches above the ramp surface, and that height must stay consistent along the entire run.3U.S. Access Board. Chapter 5: General Site and Building Elements A rail that dips or rises as it travels the ramp fails compliance even if every point falls inside the 34-to-38-inch range.
Grip Size and Shape
Round handrails need an outside diameter between 1¼ and 2 inches. Non-circular profiles are allowed if their perimeter is between 4 and 6¼ inches and the cross-section is no wider than 2¼ inches.3U.S. Access Board. Clearance from the Wall

Continuity and No Rotation
The gripping surface must be continuous along its full length, with no breaks or obstructions along the top or sides. The bottom can be obstructed for up to 20 percent of its length. Extensions at Top and Bottom
At both ends of the ramp run, handrails must extend horizontally at least 12 inches beyond the point where the slope begins and ends. The extensions give a user something to hold while stepping onto or off the ramp. The ends must return to a wall, guard, or the landing surface. Edge Protection Is a Separate Requirement
Handrails stop people from falling sideways. Edge protection stops wheelchair casters and crutch tips from slipping off the ramp surface, and the standards require it along both sides of ramp runs and landings. You can satisfy it in one of three ways:
- A curb at least 4 inches high along the ramp edge.
- A barrier or vertical pickets that block the passage of a 4-inch diameter sphere.
- Extending the ramp or landing surface at least 12 inches past the inside face of the handrails on each side.

What Happens If You Skip the Handrails
Inaccessible ramps are among the easiest ADA violations to spot from the sidewalk, and enforcement runs on two tracks.
Under Title III, individuals can sue a business to force accessibility fixes. Local Codes Can Require Handrails Sooner
The ADA sets a federal floor, not a ceiling. State and local building codes often go further, sometimes requiring handrails on ramps with a shorter rise, dictating particular materials, or adding features like tactile warning strips. Where the local code is stricter, you meet the local code. Where the ADA is stricter, you meet the ADA.
