If you get Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate mobility component, you pay nothing to tax your car. The DLA car tax exemption is a full nil-rate on Vehicle Excise Duty, and it applies for as long as your award continues. The lower rate mobility component of DLA does not qualify for any reduction at all, so if that’s your rate you pay standard vehicle tax like anyone else.
Which DLA Rate Gets You Free Car Tax
Only the higher rate mobility component of DLA gives you the full exemption. On a car that would otherwise cost £200 a year to tax, that wipes the bill to zero.
The lower rate mobility component does not qualify for a reduction of any kind.1GOV.UK. Financial Help if You’re Disabled – Vehicles and Transport This is the most common source of confusion. If your DLA award is at the lower mobility rate, the vehicle needs to be taxed in the ordinary way.
The exemption also comes with a use condition. The vehicle must be registered in the disabled person’s name, or in the name of a nominated driver who uses the car solely for the disabled person’s needs.2GOV.UK. How to Apply for Free Disabled Tax Errands, prescription runs, and appointments count. Using the car for the nominated driver’s own unrelated trips does not, and the exemption can be withdrawn if that’s what the vehicle is being used for.
Documents You Need Before You Apply
Get everything in one place before you visit the Post Office. Missing paperwork is what turns a ten-minute job into a return trip.
- Certificate of Entitlement. This is issued by the Department for Work and Pensions and proves you receive the higher rate mobility component. It shows the start and end dates of your award. If you can’t find yours, request a replacement well before your tax is due.3GOV.UK. How to Apply for Free Disabled Tax (INS216)
- V5C registration certificate. The vehicle logbook, showing the registered keeper and current tax class. The class will need changing to “disabled” as part of the application.2GOV.UK. How to Apply for Free Disabled Tax
- Valid MOT certificate. Usually checked electronically, but bring proof to be safe.2GOV.UK. How to Apply for Free Disabled Tax
- V10 form. Only needed if you haven’t had a V11 reminder, if vehicle details have changed, if the vehicle has been off the road, or if it’s currently on SORN.4GOV.UK. Apply for Vehicle Tax (Form V10)
Check that the name on your Certificate of Entitlement matches the name on the V5C. If the car is registered to a nominated driver, the paperwork needs to show clearly that the vehicle is used for you.2GOV.UK. How to Apply for the First Time
Your first application has to be made in person at a Post Office branch that handles vehicle tax.5GOV.UK. Get Free Vehicle Tax if You’re a Driver with a Disability Not every branch offers the service, so check before you travel. The clerk will look at your Certificate of Entitlement and V5C, change the vehicle’s tax class to disabled, and process the nil-rate tax.
If you’re buying a car from a dealer, they can often set the disabled tax class up for you at the point of sale. Bring your Certificate of Entitlement along and the vehicle is registered in the right class from day one.2GOV.UK. How to Apply for Free Disabled Tax
Once the application goes through, DVLA sends a fresh V5C showing the disabled tax class. Keep it. You’ll need it every year at renewal.
Renewing Each Year
Once the vehicle is already in the disabled tax class, later renewals are simple. You can do it online at GOV.UK, by phone on 0300 123 4321, or at a Post Office.2GOV.UK. How to Apply for Free Disabled Tax A V11 reminder letter arrives before your tax runs out, with a reference number for the online form.
Even though you pay nothing, you still have to renew. Skipping it means DVLA’s system shows the car as untaxed, and that triggers enforcement whether or not you would have qualified for exemption.
One Vehicle at a Time
The exemption covers a single vehicle.6GOV.UK. Vehicles Exempt from Vehicle Tax If you own two cars, you pick which one is taxed for free and pay the standard rate on the other.
Moving the exemption to a different car isn’t an online job. You take it off the current vehicle first, tax that car at the standard rate or declare a SORN, then go through the initial Post Office application for the new one so it can be reclassified into the disabled tax class.
If Your DLA Changes or Ends
Vehicle tax relief is tied to the benefit. If your higher rate mobility component is reduced or your award ends, the exemption ends with it. Before driving again you need to tax the car in the ordinary class, or declare a SORN if it’s staying off the road.
The penalties for driving untaxed are not gentle. DVLA can issue an automatic £80 late licensing penalty, and a magistrates’ court can fine you up to £1,000 or five times the outstanding tax, whichever is greater. Vehicles without valid tax can also be clamped or impounded. DVLA runs automated checks against its own database, so no one has to report you for enforcement to start.
There’s also the DLA-to-PIP question. DLA has been replaced by Personal Independence Payment for working-age adults between 16 and State Pension age, and existing DLA claimants are gradually being moved across. Children under 16 can still claim DLA, and some people already on DLA over State Pension age carry on with it. If you’re reassessed and end up on PIP enhanced rate mobility, you keep the full exemption. If you land on standard rate mobility instead, the entitlement drops to a 50% reduction rather than nil.1GOV.UK. Financial Help if You’re Disabled – Vehicles and Transport If the mobility component is lost entirely, so is the tax relief.
Where your award has a fixed end date, plan ahead. Get the renewal application in early enough that there’s no gap. Even a short break with no valid tax or SORN can bring an enforcement letter.
Motability as an Alternative
If you receive the higher rate mobility component, you can also lease a car through the Motability Scheme instead of buying one. Under Motability, the scheme handles the vehicle tax itself. The car arrives taxed, and Motability renews it every year for the length of the lease at no extra cost to you.7Motability Scheme. Tax
The lease is paid for by exchanging your weekly mobility payment, and typically bundles insurance, servicing, breakdown cover, and tax together. You give up the cash payment and drive a car you don’t own, but the paperwork side effectively disappears.
What Free Car Tax Does Not Cover
A Blue Badge is a separate scheme. Having a Blue Badge does not on its own get you free car tax, and getting free car tax does not automatically give you a Blue Badge.1GOV.UK. Financial Help if You’re Disabled – Vehicles and Transport The badge deals with parking. Tax relief is tied to the mobility component of your benefit.
The exemption also doesn’t touch insurance. Any vehicle kept on a public road must still have at least third-party cover unless it’s SORN. Penalties for driving uninsured are separate and generally harsher, running to a fixed penalty of up to £300 and six penalty points, or an unlimited fine in court. One small point of protection worth knowing: legislation prevents wheel clamping of a vehicle displaying a valid disabled person’s badge, though that has no bearing on insurance enforcement itself.
