Discord Nitro Gift Charge: Causes, Refunds, and Chargebacks

A “DISCORD*” line on your bank or card statement labeled as a Nitro gift is a one-time payment someone made through Discord to send a Nitro subscription to another user. Depending on the plan and length, a discord gift Nitro charge runs anywhere from $2.99 to $99.99, and it does not create a recurring subscription for the buyer.¹ If you don’t recognize it, the cause is usually a family member’s purchase, a forgotten or accidental buy, a second Discord account tied to the same card, or unauthorized access to the account.²

Discord uses the same “DISCORD*” (or “PAYPAL DISCORD”) descriptor for gifts and regular subscriptions, so the statement line alone won’t tell you which it was.³ As of 2026, Nitro is $9.99/month or $99.99/year and Nitro Basic is $2.99/month or $29.99/year.⁴ Matching the amount on your statement to those tiers is the fastest way to confirm what you’re looking at.

One boundary worth flagging: charges made through the iOS App Store or Google Play appear under Apple or Google, not Discord, and have to be refunded through those platforms.² A “DISCORD*” descriptor means the payment went to Discord directly.

Why the Charge Might Be There

Before treating the charge as fraud, work through the ordinary explanations. Discord flags five that come up most often:

A family member or friend with access to the card made the purchase on their own Discord account.
You bought a gift and don’t remember it, or the transaction posted later than you expected.
A gift was tapped through by accident; the flow is short.
Someone gained access to your Discord account and used the payment method stored on file.
A different Discord account of yours is tied to the same card.²

Purchases by children using a saved card are one of the most common sources. That situation sits in a gray area for consumer protection: the Fair Credit Billing Act caps liability for unauthorized credit card charges at $50, but some issuers define “unauthorized” narrowly enough that a household member’s purchase may not qualify.⁵ Going to Discord first is usually better than going to the bank first.

Whether You Can Get a Refund

For Nitro gifts, refund eligibility hinges on whether the recipient has redeemed the gift.

If the gift is unclaimed, you can request a refund within five days of the purchase for transactions made on desktop, web, or Android.⁶
Once someone has redeemed the gift, Discord will not refund it.⁷
If you redeemed the gift on your own account, you may qualify under Discord’s standard one-time refund policy.⁶
iOS purchases have to be refunded through Apple’s “Report a Problem” portal, not Discord.⁶
Nitro codes bought through Amazon are non-refundable through Discord and non-returnable through Amazon.⁸

To check whether the gift has been claimed, open User Settings and go to Gift Inventory. Unclaimed gifts appear there; you can revoke the link (generating a new one) or leave it and file a refund request.⁹ Discord reviews requests case by case and limits refunds to one per purchase category, so a prior Nitro refund generally rules out another.⁶

Filing the Request

The refund form is at dis.gd/billing. Submit it from the email tied to the Discord account, pick the relevant billing category, and include the payment ID from User Settings > Billing on desktop.¹⁰ For Android purchases the payment identifier is the GPA number from the Google Play confirmation email. iOS purchases go through Apple.

If You Didn’t Authorize the Charge

Report unauthorized transactions to Discord before disputing them with your bank. A bank chargeback triggers automatic account suspension, so Discord asks users to come to billing first.³

Use the form at dis.gd/request, select “Refunds, Cancellations & Payments,” and pick the unauthorized transaction option. Include the date and amount, the payment method, a payment identifier (last four digits of the card or PayPal invoice ID), and screenshots of the charge on your bank statement. Discord aims to respond within 72 hours.²

Discord’s Paid Services Terms state that the company is not responsible for lost or stolen redemption codes or unauthorized gift redemption except where required by law.¹¹

Why a Chargeback Is Risky

Filing a chargeback with your bank is treated by Discord as a Terms of Service violation under its abuse and fraud provisions. It triggers an automatic account suspension while Discord investigates, and any refund granted outside the standard policy can lead to permanent account disablement.¹²³

Appeals are tight. You have 48 hours from the suspension notice to appeal through dis.gd/request under “Appeals & Age Update Requests,” and you’ll need evidence such as a bank statement screenshot of the disputed transaction or a photo of the card showing only the last four digits. If someone else filed the chargeback (a parent whose card was used, for example), the cardholder has to withdraw the fraud report within that same 48-hour window for the account to be restored.¹³

Account data is deleted or anonymized 90 days after suspension. Past that point, Discord no longer has records and cannot process an appeal.¹²

Your Rights With the Bank

Discord’s internal policy doesn’t override federal consumer protections. If Discord won’t resolve the charge, you still have recourse.

For credit card charges, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau instructs consumers to send a written billing error notice to the card issuer within 60 days of the statement showing the charge. The card company must acknowledge the dispute within 30 days and then investigate and resolve it.¹⁴

For debit card charges, the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E require your financial institution to investigate claims of unauthorized transfers and correct confirmed errors within one business day of finishing the investigation. Institutions cannot require you to contact the merchant first, and they cannot use consumer negligence as a basis for imposing liability above Regulation E’s limits.¹⁵

You can also file a complaint with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and with your state attorney general.¹⁶ Keep in mind that using a bank remedy still carries the Discord suspension consequence described above; the choice is a trade-off, not a free option.

Preventing the Next One

If a household member is the source, remove the saved payment method from the Discord account and turn on purchase confirmations on the device. If the charge came from account compromise, change the password immediately and enable multi-factor authentication. Discord recommends passkeys or an authenticator app over SMS verification, since SMS is vulnerable to SIM-swapping.¹⁷¹⁸

If the account has already been disabled because your bank filed a chargeback after a compromise, appeal through Discord’s Trust and Safety team using the email tied to the disabled account, within the 48-hour window.¹⁹
