Disabled Car Tax: Exemptions, 50% Reduction, and How to Apply

Disabled car tax relief in the UK means you pay no Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) on one vehicle if you receive the higher or enhanced rate mobility component of a qualifying disability benefit, or half the normal rate if you get the standard rate mobility component of PIP or Adult Disability Payment. From April 2026 the standard annual VED for most cars is £200, so a full exemption saves the whole £200 and the 50% reduction brings it down to £100.1GOV.UK. Eligibility turns on the benefit and the rate of its mobility component, not on your diagnosis.

Who Qualifies for Free Vehicle Tax

You pay nothing if you receive any of the following:

  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA), higher rate mobility component
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP), enhanced rate mobility component
  • Adult Disability Payment (ADP), enhanced rate mobility component
  • Child Disability Payment (CDP), higher rate mobility component
  • Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (SADLA), higher rate mobility component
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP), any award
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS), any award

The word that does the work is “higher” or “enhanced.” A lower or standard rate DLA or CDP award does not qualify for free tax at all. Standard rate PIP or ADP mobility does not qualify for the exemption either, but it does qualify for the 50% reduction described below.1GOV.UK. Who Qualifies for the 50% Reduction

If you get the standard rate mobility component of PIP or ADP, you pay half the normal VED on one vehicle. On a £200 standard rate car that means £100 a year. The application process and the vehicle rules are the same as for the full exemption; you just pay the remaining half when you tax or renew.1GOV.UK. What the Exemption Is Worth

From April 2026 the standard annual VED rate is £200 for petrol, diesel, alternative fuel, and zero-emission cars registered on or after 1 April 2017.2GOV.UK. V149 – Rates of Vehicle Tax, April 2026

Cars with a list price over £50,000 when new attract an extra £440 annual supplement for five years from the start of the second licence, taking the total to £640. The disabled exemption wipes out the whole bill, supplement included. At the 50% rate you would pay £320 rather than £640 on one of these higher-value cars.

Cars registered before April 2017 use a different table based on CO2 emissions, so the exact saving varies, but the exemption or reduction covers whatever your vehicle’s rate would otherwise be.

Rules on the Vehicle

The exemption or the reduction applies to one vehicle at a time. The vehicle must be registered in your name, or in the name of an appointee or a nominated person who uses it only for your purposes. The statute requires the vehicle to be “used, or kept for use, by or for the purposes of” the disabled person, which covers medical appointments, shopping, social trips, and other daily-life journeys. A family member can drive on your behalf as long as the journey is for you.3Legislation.gov.uk. Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994, Schedule 24GOV.UK. How to Apply for Free Disabled Tax (INS216)

You cannot hold the full exemption on one car and the 50% reduction on another at the same time. The law blocks any second vehicle in your name from carrying either the reduced-rate licence or the disabled exempt status.3Legislation.gov.uk. Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994, Schedule 2

How to Apply

Buying a New Car

Take your certificate of entitlement for your qualifying benefit to the dealer. They can register the car in the disabled tax class from the start, so you never pay VED on it.4GOV.UK. How to Apply for Free Disabled Tax (INS216)

A Used Car or Any Car Not Already in the Disabled Class

The first application has to be done in person at a Post Office branch that handles vehicle tax. You cannot switch the tax class online.5GOV.UK. Get Free Vehicle Tax if You’re a Driver With a Disability

Renewals

Once the car is in the disabled tax class, you can renew online through GOV.UK or by phone. The system applies the exemption or the 50% rate automatically.5GOV.UK. Get Free Vehicle Tax if You’re a Driver With a Disability

What to Bring to the Post Office

  • The V5C registration certificate (logbook) showing the car in your name or your nominee’s name. If you do not have the full V5C, the green new keeper slip together with a completed V62 will do.
  • Your certificate of entitlement from the Department for Work and Pensions, Social Security Scotland, or Veterans UK, confirming the qualifying benefit and the rate of your mobility component. Write the vehicle’s registration number in the top right corner before you hand it in.
  • A valid MOT certificate, if the car needs one. Electronic copies are fine. Cars exempt from MOT (for example, under three years old) do not need one.

Vehicles registered to a Northern Ireland address also need a valid certificate of insurance or cover note for the day the tax starts. Downloaded copies work; photocopies do not.4GOV.UK. How to Apply for Free Disabled Tax (INS216)

Motability Scheme Cars

If you lease through Motability, the scheme handles VED for you. The car arrives with the first year’s tax sorted, and Motability renews it every year for the length of the lease. On an electric Motability car, the scheme arranges the disability exemption at no extra cost.6Motability Scheme. Tax

Electric Cars

Since April 2025, electric cars are no longer automatically exempt from VED and pay the same £200 standard rate as petrol and diesel. The disabled exemption still applies in full, so if you qualify you pay nothing on an electric car just as you would on any other.2GOV.UK. V149 – Rates of Vehicle Tax, April 2026

If Your Benefit Stops or Is Reduced

If your qualifying benefit ends, drops below the required rate, or is not renewed, the exemption goes with it. You then have to tax the vehicle in the appropriate standard class, which means a trip to a Post Office with your V5C and MOT and paying the standard rate.4GOV.UK. Do not let this drift. Driving an untaxed vehicle is a separate offence and can bring a fine or DVLA enforcement action, regardless of what is happening with your benefit. If you are going through a reassessment, watch the dates and re-tax promptly if the decision goes against you.

Blue Badge Is a Separate Scheme

The Blue Badge, which lets you use disabled parking spaces, has its own rules and its own application. Holding a Blue Badge does not give you free or reduced vehicle tax, and getting the tax exemption does not give you a Blue Badge. If you want both, you apply for each one separately.
