Disability pay dates follow two different schedules. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) arrives on the 1st of every month. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) arrives on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month, depending on the day you were born. A smaller group of SSDI recipients is paid on the 3rd instead. Everything else, including holiday shifts and first-payment timing, flows from those rules.
SSI Payments Arrive on the 1st
SSI is scheduled for the 1st of each month for every recipient.1Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026 There is no staggering by birth date. When the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment shifts to the last business day of the previous month.2Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook 121 – Payment Dates
That shift is why some months appear to contain two SSI deposits. January 1, 2026 is a federal holiday, so the January payment was issued on December 31, 2025. December 2025 held two SSI deposits and January 2026 held none. The amount didn’t change; the January payment simply landed a day early.
SSDI Wednesday by Birth Date
If you filed for SSDI on or after May 1, 1997, your monthly Wednesday is set by the day of the month you were born:3Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits
- Born 1st through 10th: second Wednesday of the month
- Born 11th through 20th: third Wednesday of the month
- Born 21st through 31st: fourth Wednesday of the month
Your group is permanent. Moving, changing banks, or switching between direct deposit and a debit card doesn’t change your Wednesday.

Who Gets Paid on the 3rd Instead
Three groups skip the Wednesday rotation and receive SSDI on the 3rd of each month regardless of birth date:4Social Security Administration. Cyclical Payment of Social Security Benefits
- Anyone who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997, which predates the Wednesday system.
- Anyone who receives both SSDI and SSI. The SSDI payment comes on the 3rd and the SSI payment on the 1st.1Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026
- Beneficiaries living outside the United States.
When the 3rd falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment shifts to the preceding business day, the same rule that governs every other Social Security payment date.2Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook 121 – Payment Dates
How Weekends and Holidays Move a Payment
Any scheduled payment date that lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday moves to the nearest preceding business day.5Social Security Administration. When Will I Get My Benefits if the Payment Date Falls on a Weekend or Holiday If the 1st falls on a Sunday, your SSI deposit arrives that Friday. The same rule covers a Wednesday SSDI date that hits a federal holiday and any 3rd-of-the-month payment that falls on a weekend.
Some banks and credit unions post deposits a day early on their own. That’s a courtesy from the bank, not a guarantee from SSA, so don’t build a bill schedule around it.
Benefits Are Paid a Month Behind
Social Security pays for the previous month, not the current one. Your July benefit arrives in August.6Social Security Administration. What You Need to Know When You Get Retirement or Survivors Benefits This is true for both SSDI and SSI. The deposit you receive on the second Wednesday of October is your September benefit. That timing matters most when benefits start, when they stop, and when a cost-of-living increase kicks in.
When Your First SSDI Payment Arrives
SSDI has a five-month waiting period. Benefits cannot begin until you have been disabled for five full consecutive calendar months.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 USC 423 – Disability Insurance Benefit Payments The sixth month is the first month you’re eligible for a payment, and because benefits are paid in arrears, the deposit itself arrives the month after that. If SSA sets your disability onset in January, June is your first eligible month, and your first deposit lands in July on the Wednesday matching your birth date.
Two situations skip the waiting period. If you were entitled to disability benefits within the past five years, you resume without a new wait. The same applies if you have ALS and your application was approved on or after July 23, 2020.8Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 404-0315
For most applicants, the five-month wait passed long before approval, because the application and appeals process itself often runs many months. What’s owed for that period comes as back pay.
How Back Pay Is Paid
SSDI back pay covers the months from the end of your five-month waiting period through the month SSA approved your claim. It arrives as a single lump sum, usually within a few weeks of approval, and is separate from your first regular monthly payment.
SSI back pay works differently. If the amount owed (after any reimbursements and attorney fees) equals or exceeds three times the current maximum federal benefit rate, SSA must split it into up to three installments spaced six months apart.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 USC 1383 – Procedure for Payment of Benefits The first two installments are each capped at three times the maximum monthly benefit, and the third installment covers whatever remains.
You can ask for a larger first or second installment if you have outstanding debts for food, shelter, medical expenses, or certain other necessities.10Social Security Administration. POMS SI 02101.020 – Large Past-Due Supplemental Security Income The installment rule is waived entirely in two cases: if SSA expects your medical condition to result in death within 12 months, or if you are no longer eligible for SSI and are unlikely to become eligible again within the next year.
If a Payment Doesn’t Arrive
Contact your bank or credit union first. Bank-side processing delays are the most common cause, and one call usually confirms whether the deposit is pending.
