If you don’t already have an account, you’ll need to create one through either Login.gov or ID.me. As of June 2025, those are the only two sign-in options for Social Security’s online services, and the old SSA username-and-password method has been retired.4Social Security Administration. Budget a few minutes, and expect the identity check to occasionally give people trouble.

Request One by Phone

Call 1-800-772-1213. The automated system can process a replacement request without you ever speaking to a person, and it runs 24 hours a day.5Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security by Phone Live agents are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time. Early mornings and later in the week generally mean shorter waits.

Pick One Up at a Field Office

You can also walk into a local Social Security office. Staff will verify your identity, pull your benefit statement, and print it on the spot at no charge.3Social Security Administration. How Long Each Method Takes

Online download is instant. That’s why it’s the right choice when Tax Day is close. A paper copy requested by phone or through the mail option in the online portal takes at least 10 business days to arrive.3Social Security Administration. Beneficiaries outside the United States should allow up to 30 days for a mailed replacement.

If the Replacement Won’t Arrive Before Tax Day

You have two practical options: file with your own records, or request an extension.

The IRS does not require you to attach the SSA-1099 to your return. You just need the correct net benefit figure on your Form 1040. You can reconstruct that number from bank statements showing monthly Social Security deposits, the payment history in your my Social Security account, or a prior-year return adjusted for benefit changes. The number you’re after is Box 5 on the SSA-1099, which is total benefits paid minus any benefits repaid during the year.6Social Security Administration. If you’d rather wait for the real thing, file Form 4868 for an automatic six-month extension, which moves your filing deadline to October 15.9Internal Revenue Service. If the Amount on the Form Is Wrong

Don’t file with a number you think is off. Call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a field office. A technician can review your payment history and issue a corrected statement if the figures don’t match.11Social Security Administration. Before you ask for a correction, check Box 5 against what you actually received during the year, since that net figure is what the tax return uses.

If You Think Your Form Was Stolen From the Mail

An SSA-1099 carries your full name, Social Security number, and benefit amounts, which is enough for identity theft. If you suspect the statement was taken rather than lost, do two things beyond requesting a replacement. Getting a Replacement From Outside the U.S.

The domestic phone line and online portal can have geographic restrictions when accessed from abroad.
