Did Not Receive Your Stimulus Check? Payment Trace and Deadlines

If you didn’t receive your stimulus check and are wondering what to do, the honest answer depends on whether the IRS ever sent one. The deadlines to file a tax return and claim a missing payment through the Recovery Rebate Credit have both passed: May 17, 2024 for the first and second payments, and April 15, 2025 for the third.1Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund Unclaimed money now belongs to the U.S. Treasury. But if IRS records show a payment was issued to you and it never arrived, that’s a different problem with a different fix, and a payment trace is still available.

Start by Checking What the IRS Actually Sent

Before anything else, find out whether a payment was issued in your name and for how much. Your IRS Online Account shows the payment history for all three rounds and will confirm the amount and date of any Economic Impact Payment sent to you.2Internal Revenue Service. Online Account for Individuals

The IRS also mailed a paper notice after each payment: Notice 1444 for the first round, Notice 1444-B for the second, and Notice 1444-C for the third.3Internal Revenue Service. 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit – Topic F: Finding the First and Second Economic Impact Payment Amounts to Calculate the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit If you saved those, they confirm what was sent. If you didn’t, the Online Account is now the reliable source.

What you find there decides everything else. If a payment was issued but you never received it, keep reading. If no payment was ever issued and you never filed a 2020 or 2021 return, the statutory window to claim the credit has closed and there is no remaining mechanism to recover the money.

You May Have Received an Automatic Payment in Early 2025

In late 2024, the IRS identified roughly one million taxpayers who had filed 2021 returns but left the Recovery Rebate Credit line blank or entered $0 despite qualifying. The IRS sent automatic payments of up to $1,400 to that group without requiring an amended return, and most arrived by late January 2025. The agency used the bank account and mailing address from the most recently filed return.

If you filed a 2021 return, didn’t claim the third stimulus on it, and haven’t looked closely at your bank statements or mail from that period, check now. This is one of the few situations where money may have moved without any action on your part.

How to Run a Payment Trace

A payment trace asks the IRS to find out what happened to a payment its records show as issued. This process is separate from filing a tax return, so the Recovery Rebate Credit deadlines don’t shut it down.

You can start a trace two ways: call the IRS at 800-919-9835, or submit Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund. The form asks for the tax period, the type of return, and the refund amount in question. If you mail it, use the IRS service center assigned to your state, listed on the form’s instructions.4Internal Revenue Service. About Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund

The IRS generally responds within six weeks, longer during peak filing season. If the trace shows the check was cashed by someone else, the IRS opens a claim with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service. If the check was returned undeliverable or never cashed, the payment should be reissued to your current address or bank account.

Update Your Address or Bank Info First

If you’ve moved or changed banks since 2020 or 2021, update the IRS before a reissued payment is sent. You can file Form 8822 to change your address of record; a postal forwarding order alone is not enough because not all post offices forward government checks.5Internal Revenue Service. Why Payments Went Missing

Figuring out what likely happened to your check helps you know which fix applies.

  • Outdated address. The IRS mailed checks to the address on your most recent return. If you moved, the check was often returned undeliverable.
  • Closed or changed bank account. Direct deposits to a closed account were usually rejected back to the IRS, which then mailed a paper check to the address on file.
  • Never filed a return. People who weren’t required to file needed to use a special IRS Non-Filers tool during 2020 and 2021. Many retirees, people with disabilities, and very low-income households never learned it existed.6Internal Revenue Service. • Identity theft. If someone filed using your Social Security number, the payment may have gone to the wrong person. Report the theft at IdentityTheft.gov and file Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit, with the IRS.7Federal Trade Commission. IdentityTheft.gov

The first two situations are the strongest candidates for a payment trace. The third is the hardest: without a 2020 or 2021 return filed in time, there is no way to claim the credit now.

A Smaller Payment Than Expected

Sometimes a payment arrived but for less than you were owed. For the first round, the Treasury Offset Program could reduce the payment to collect past-due child support.8Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Treasury Offset Program The second round was protected from all offsets. The third was protected from federal tax debt and child support but not from private creditors with a court judgment who garnished the money after it hit your account.

If you believe a child support offset from the first round was applied in error, you can check the status by calling the Treasury Offset Program at 800-304-3107. Recovering an offset that was legally applied is a much harder matter than tracing a lost payment.

If the IRS Reduced a Credit You Already Claimed

Some taxpayers who did claim the Recovery Rebate Credit received math error notices reducing or removing it. The standard window to dispute one of these is 60 days from the date the notice was mailed.9Taxpayer Advocate Service. Math Error Part II: Math Error Notices Aren’t Just Confusing If you’re still within that period, call 800-829-0922 and ask for the assessment to be reversed; within 60 days, the IRS is required to reverse it even without documentation from you.

After 60 days, you can still request a reversal but will need documents supporting your original figure. If a supplemental notice arrived about a prior adjustment, the 60-day clock restarts from the date of that newer notice. For old adjustments that were never disputed, the realistic options at this point are very limited.

Confirming the Amounts You Should Have Received

If you’re running a trace or trying to reconcile what arrived against what was owed, the maximum amounts per person were $1,200 for the first round, $600 for the second, and $1,400 for the third, with matching amounts for qualifying children (and, in the third round, any qualifying dependent regardless of age).10U.S. Department of the Treasury. Economic Impact Payments Payments phased out above set income thresholds, and the third round phased out more steeply, reaching zero at $80,000 for single filers and $160,000 for married couples filing jointly.11Internal Revenue Service. 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit – Topic A: General Information Anyone claimed as a dependent on another person’s return was ineligible for their own payment.

When the Deadlines Really Have Closed the Door

Federal law gives you three years from a return’s original due date to file and claim a refund. After that, the IRS cannot issue the money even if you clearly qualified.1Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund The 2020 return’s window closed May 17, 2024; the 2021 window closed April 15, 2025. Filing a late 2020 or 2021 return now will not produce a Recovery Rebate Credit refund.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service, at 800-777-4778, can help if your problem involves IRS error rather than a missed filing deadline. They cannot override the statutory time limit for claiming a refund, but they can push a stalled payment trace or a disputed adjustment forward.
