A charge labeled “DHgate Hong Kong” on your bank or credit card statement is almost always from a purchase on DHgate.com, a China-based cross-border marketplace that routes buyer payments through Hong Kong-registered subsidiaries. That routing is why the descriptor names Hong Kong and why your card issuer may tack on a foreign transaction fee. If you placed the order, the charge is legitimate. If you didn’t, treat it as unauthorized and contact your card issuer right away.
Why the Descriptor Says Hong Kong
DHgate does not process payments directly through its mainland China operations. According to the platform’s own Terms of Use, buyer payments run through Hong Kong-incorporated entities: Rich Palace Holdings Limited handles buyers outside the EU, EEA, and the UK, and Jiahe Holdings Limited handles buyers inside the EU and EEA.1DHgate. The Foreign Transaction Fee
Many credit and debit cards add a foreign transaction fee whenever a payment is processed by a non-domestic bank or in a foreign currency. The total generally lands between 1% and 3% of the purchase amount, usually split between the card network (around 1%) and the issuing bank (another 1% to 2%).3TD Bank. What To Know About Foreign Transaction Fees The trigger is where the processing bank sits, not the currency shown at checkout, so prices displayed in U.S. dollars can still carry the fee.
Practically, that means your DHgate order may cost a few percent more than the site quoted. Cards marketed as having no foreign transaction fee eliminate the surcharge.
If You Made the Purchase but Something Went Wrong
DHgate uses an escrow model. Your payment sits with the Hong Kong subsidiary until you confirm the goods arrived acceptably or an inspection window expires, and only then is money released to the seller.4DHgate. Escrow Service That gives you room to open a dispute on the platform itself.

If You Didn’t Make the Purchase
An unfamiliar DHgate Hong Kong charge on your statement, with no order in your account and no purchase you can recall, may be unauthorized. The Federal Trade Commission and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau lay out a clear process for credit card disputes:
- Call your card issuer using the number on the back of your card and report the charge as unauthorized. Note the representative’s name and the date.10FTC. Disputing Credit Card Charges
- Send a written billing error notice within 60 calendar days of the date the first statement containing the charge was mailed to you. Use certified mail with return receipt requested and include your name, account number, the dollar amount, the charge date, and why the charge is wrong.11CFPB. How Do I Dispute a Charge on My Credit Card Bill
- The issuer has 30 days to acknowledge your dispute in writing. If it agrees the charge was unauthorized, it must remove it. If it finds the charge valid, it must explain why in writing and tell you the amount owed.11CFPB. How Do I Dispute a Charge on My Credit Card Bill
Federal credit card protections are stronger than debit card protections, though some debit issuers offer additional voluntary coverage. If you’re not satisfied with how your issuer handles the dispute, you can file a complaint with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint or by calling (855) 411-2372.10FTC. Duplicate or Doubled Charges
Two identical DHgate Hong Kong charges are a separate situation. DHgate acknowledges that duplicate charges and overcharges can occur through technical glitches or processing errors.12DHgate. Dealing With E-Commerce Payment Confirmation Issues If the system sees a payment received more than once with no matching duplicate order in your account, DHgate says it will issue an automatic refund. Sometimes the duplicate is a pending authorization on the bank’s side that drops off on its own, so it’s worth calling your bank. If a duplicate order does show up in your account, contact the seller to hold one and cancel the other through the platform.13DHgate. Duplicate Orders
