DEA Form 224A: Fees, the 45-Day Rule, and Filing Online

DEA Form 224a is the online renewal application for practitioners, pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, and teaching institutions that already hold a federal controlled-substance registration. The fee is $888 for a three-year term, and the entire process runs through the DEA Diversion Control Division website. File at least 45 days before your expiration date and your existing registration automatically stays in effect until the DEA rules on the renewal. That 45-day mark, not the expiration date, is the deadline that actually matters.

Who Files Form 224a

Form 224a is only for renewing an existing registration. First-time applicants use Form 224 instead. The registrants covered are individual practitioners such as physicians, dentists, and veterinarians; mid-level practitioners such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants; retail pharmacies; hospitals and clinics; and teaching institutions.¹ These registrations authorize handling of controlled substances in Schedules II through V.²

Manufacturers, distributors, importers, exporters, and researchers renew on different forms (225a, 363a, or 510a) and are outside this process.³

Fee and Term

The renewal fee is $888 and covers a three-year registration period.² The fee is non-refundable whether or not the DEA approves the renewal.

What to Have Ready Before You Start

The online session will time out if you leave to hunt for information, so pull these together first:

Your DEA registration number and expiration date, both on your current certificate.
Your state professional license number and its expiration date. The state license must be current for the DEA to approve the renewal.
The physical address where controlled substances are stored or administered. Not a mailing address, not a P.O. box.
Social Security Number for individual practitioners, or Tax Identification Number for business entities.⁴
The specific controlled substance schedules you currently handle.
A credit or debit card for the $888 fee.

The form also asks yes-or-no liability questions: prior controlled-substance convictions, Medicare or state health-program exclusions, and any revocation, suspension, or surrender for cause of a DEA registration or state license. For corporations, partnerships, and pharmacies, those questions extend to officers, partners, stockholders, and proprietors. A “yes” is not an automatic denial, but the DEA will typically ask for supporting records and the review will take longer, so have court documents or board orders in hand before you begin.

Filing the Renewal Online

All Form 224a renewals go through the DEA Diversion Control website. Paper is no longer an option.⁵

The DEA sends email reminders at 60, 45, 30, 15, and 5 days before expiration, and you can begin as soon as the 60-day notice arrives.¹ Registrations more than 60 days from expiring generally are not yet available for renewal in the system.⁶

To log in, enter your DEA number with your last name (individuals) or business name (entities). The name has to match your current certificate exactly, taken from before the comma on the first line of your personal information.⁶ Businesses should be careful not to grab what looks like a business name but is actually the first line of a street address.

Your existing data will be pre-populated. Review each field, update your state license information if it has changed, confirm the registered address, answer the liability questions, and pay. Save or print the on-screen confirmation right away as proof of timely filing.

The 45-Day Rule

File your renewal at least 45 days before your expiration date and your existing registration automatically extends, remaining in effect until the DEA issues a final decision. You can keep prescribing, dispensing, and administering while you wait.⁷

File closer to expiration and the DEA may still grant an extension, but it is discretionary. You are then depending on the agency to act before your registration lapses, with no guarantee. Treat 45 days out as the real deadline.

If Your Registration Has Already Expired

Once the registration expires without a renewal on file, you must stop all controlled-substance activity immediately. Federal law prohibits handling these substances under an expired registration, including during any reinstatement period.¹

The DEA allows reinstatement for one calendar month after expiration. Filing Form 224a within that window restores your existing DEA number. You still cannot touch controlled substances during the lapse, whether or not you have submitted the reinstatement paperwork.¹

Miss that one month and your DEA number becomes permanently invalid. From there, you would have to file a new application on Form 224 and go through the full initial review.¹

Prescribing or dispensing under an expired number is a federal crime. Under 21 U.S.C. § 843, knowingly using an expired DEA registration number carries up to four years in prison, a fine, or both, with the maximum doubling to eight years for a second or subsequent offense.⁸

Address Changes Are Separate

The renewal form is not where you update a physical address. Address modifications go through a separate DEA process on the Diversion Control website and take effect upon approval.¹ There is no fee for a modification.⁹ A DEA registration is tied to a specific location, so moving without updating it creates a compliance gap.
