DD Form 93: Designations, Updates, and Filing Pitfalls

DD Form 93, the Record of Emergency Data, is the document every service member uses to tell the Department of Defense who to contact, who to pay, and who controls their remains if they die or are seriously injured while serving. Active duty, Reserve, and National Guard members are all responsible for keeping it current, and the designations on it carry legal weight that overrides a civilian will for military-specific benefits like the $100,000 death gratuity.¹ A stale form can send money to an ex-spouse, delay notification to family, or leave a grieving parent with no authority over funeral arrangements.

The Four Designations You Are Making

The form captures four separate categories of information. Each does a different legal job, and treating them as one block is how people end up with results they never intended.

Next of Kin

You name a primary and an alternate next of kin. These are the people casualty notification officers contact first if you are killed, seriously injured, or go missing. The form requires full names, current addresses, and working phone numbers.² If a phone number is wrong, the notification stalls, and so does any travel order that would bring family to your bedside.

Person Authorized to Direct Disposition

The PADD controls what happens to your remains: burial or cremation, the cemetery, military funeral honors. Only certain people qualify. A surviving spouse, a blood relative of legal age, or an adoptive relative. If none can be found, someone who stood in a parental role to you may serve.²

Leave the field blank and federal law fills it in: surviving spouse first, then blood relatives, then adoptive relatives, then a person who stood in loco parentis.³ That default can hand authority to someone you would not have picked, or set up disputes among family members. Naming a PADD explicitly avoids both problems. Talk to the person before you list them. They will be making logistical decisions under enormous emotional pressure, and knowing your preferences ahead of time makes that easier.

Death Gratuity Beneficiaries

The death gratuity is a tax-free lump sum of $100,000.¹ You can direct it entirely to one person or split it among several in 10 percent increments.⁴ The payment is meant to cover immediate expenses while longer-term benefits like SGLI are processed.

If you designate someone other than your spouse for all or part of the gratuity, the military is required to notify your spouse of that designation.⁴ That notification happens regardless of your reasons.

Any portion you leave undesignated follows a statutory order: surviving spouse, then children and descendants, then parents, then the executor of your estate, then other next of kin under the laws of your state of domicile.⁴

Unpaid Pay and Allowances

Any salary, leave balance, or other pay owed to you at the time of death goes to the beneficiary named in this section. If you make no designation, 10 U.S.C. § 2771 sets the order: written beneficiary, then surviving spouse, then children, then parents equally (or the surviving parent), then your legal representative, and finally whoever is entitled under your state’s inheritance laws.⁵

DD Form 93 Is Not Your SGLI Form

This is the single most common mistake. DD Form 93 controls the death gratuity, unpaid pay, next-of-kin notification, and PADD. Your Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance beneficiaries, which can cover up to $500,000, live on the SGLV-8286 inside the SGLI Online Enrollment System (SOES).⁶ Two separate systems, two separate beneficiary designations.

Updating one does nothing to the other. If you marry and name your new spouse in SOES but forget the DD Form 93, your death gratuity and unpaid pay can still go to whoever you designated years earlier, whether a parent, a sibling, or an ex-spouse.⁷ Review both together, every time.

Neither benefit is a personal asset in the traditional sense. Your elections on these forms take precedence over anything a civilian will says about these specific benefits.⁷ A will can control your house, your car, and your bank accounts. It cannot redirect the death gratuity or SGLI. The forms are the final word.

When to Update

Review your form at least once a year. Many commands attach that review to the member’s birthday as an easy trigger. Beyond the annual check, certain events should prompt an immediate update:

Marriage or divorce. A divorce does not automatically remove a former spouse from the form. If you remarry without updating, the former spouse stays the designated beneficiary.
Birth or adoption of a child.
Death of anyone listed on the form. Without a replacement, that portion drops into the statutory default order.
Address or phone number changes for any listed contact, even if the designations themselves stay the same.
Deployment or PCS orders. Units typically require a review before an overseas deployment and after reporting to a new duty station.⁸

Guard and Reserve members sometimes let the form lapse between drill periods. Updates are available at any time through your branch’s digital personnel system, not just on drill weekends.⁹

How to File the Form

The system depends on your branch. Army soldiers use the Integrated Personnel and Pay System (IPPS-A), which feeds the completed form into the electronic personnel record automatically.⁹ Air Force members typically use the virtual Military Personnel Flight (vMPF).¹⁰ If a digital system is unavailable, you can submit a printed hard copy through your unit personnel office. Every submission requires either a signed form with a witness or electronic authentication through your Common Access Card.

The blank form is available through the Department of Defense e-Forms website and at your unit personnel office.² Once submitted, it lives in your Official Military Personnel File. The system keeps prior versions on record, but only the most recent submission carries legal authority.

Pitfalls That Cost Families Money

The Former Spouse Problem

This is where most families get burned. The military follows the designations on your DD Form 93 as written. If you divorced five years ago, remarried, and never updated the form, your former spouse still receives the death gratuity. Your current spouse gets nothing from that benefit, regardless of what your will says or what anyone believed your intentions were.⁷ The same applies to SGLI, separately. Divorce settlements sometimes address beneficiary updates, but the military does not enforce those agreements. It follows the form.

Naming a Minor Child

The form’s instructions explicitly advise you to seek legal counsel before naming a minor child as a beneficiary for either the death gratuity or unpaid pay.² A minor cannot legally receive a large payment directly. A court-appointed guardian or conservator would need to manage the funds, which means legal proceedings, attorney fees, and delays before the money actually reaches your child. A trust set up in advance, or a trusted adult beneficiary with a separate arrangement for the child’s benefit, avoids that.

Leaving Fields Blank

An incomplete form is not a neutral choice. Skipping the death gratuity beneficiary field does not preserve your options; it hands the decision to the statutory hierarchy, which starts with your surviving spouse and moves down through children, parents, your estate’s executor, and other next of kin.⁴ Unpaid pay follows a similar default under a separate statute.⁵ Filling in every field is how you keep control.

Common Questions

Can My Beneficiary Designations Be Different on DD Form 93 and My Will?

Yes, and they often are. Your will controls personal assets: property, vehicles, bank accounts. DD Form 93 controls the death gratuity and unpaid pay. If the two name different people, both are honored within their own domains. The form does not replace your will, and your will does not override the form.

What if My Designated Beneficiary Dies Before Me?

The portion allocated to a deceased beneficiary is distributed according to the statutory order of precedence, not spread among the other people you named. Update the form as soon as possible after a beneficiary’s death to keep control over how the benefits are distributed.

Does the Form Matter if I Am Injured Rather Than Killed?

Yes. When a service member is seriously injured and cannot communicate, the form is used to identify and reach next of kin, arrange family travel to the bedside, and determine who should be involved in care decisions. Outdated contact information delays all of that.¹¹
