On top of that fixed calendar, severe weather, blocked mailboxes, and loose dogs can stop delivery to your address on any given day.

Sundays
USPS does not deliver regular mail on Sundays. No First-Class letters, no magazines, no standard packages.
Two exceptions. Priority Mail Express delivers on Sundays and holidays in many major markets for an added fee, with a 6 PM guarantee backed by a money-back promise.3USPS. Days Your Address Can Lose Delivery Without Warning
The fixed calendar is only half the picture. Situational interruptions can take out a single address, a street, or an entire region.
Severe Weather and Natural Disasters
Blizzards, hurricanes, wildfires, and flooding can pause delivery for days or longer. USPS holds mail at the processing facility when routes are unsafe and posts service alerts by ZIP Code showing which areas are affected and which local offices are operating.5United States Postal Service. Blocked Mailboxes
Carriers on driving routes are not required to leave the vehicle to reach the box. If snow, parked cars, or trash cans block access, the carrier moves on and your mail comes another day.6United States Postal Service. Mailbox Improvement Week, May 21-27 Clearing snow to the mailbox and keeping bins clear on trash day is on the resident.
Loose Dogs
An unleashed dog near a mailbox is enough for a carrier to skip the address. If it keeps happening, the postmaster follows an escalation process, and delivery stays suspended until the owner confirms the animal will be confined during delivery hours.7United States Postal Service. USPS National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign, June 1-30, 2025 In some cases, a whole street or cluster loses service over a single household’s dog.
What Happens to a Filing Deadline That Lands on a No-Delivery Day
If a tax or legal filing deadline falls on a Sunday or federal holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day. The IRS treats a return as timely filed as long as the envelope is properly addressed, postmarked, and deposited by the adjusted due date.8Internal Revenue Service. When to File Most state tax agencies and courts follow the same rule. One catch: blue collection boxes are not serviced on the holiday itself, so a letter dropped that day won’t get its postmark until pickup resumes.
Post Office Lobbies and Blue Boxes on Closed Days
Retail counters close on holidays, but many post office lobbies stay open around the clock, giving you access to your P.O. Box and self-service kiosks for stamps, weighing, and shipping labels.9USPS. UPS and FedEx on USPS Holidays
Private carriers keep different calendars, so a USPS closure doesn’t necessarily mean nothing can move.
UPS closes on six federal holidays in 2026: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. It runs normal operations on Presidents Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day (observed July 3), Columbus Day, and Veterans Day.12UPS. 2026 U.S. UPS Holiday Operations Schedule
FedEx fully closes on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. It operates normally on Juneteenth and offers modified service on Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day, meaning FedEx Express generally runs while FedEx Ground does not.13FedEx. 2026 FedEx Holiday Service Schedule
On Juneteenth, Presidents Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day, UPS and FedEx are both running while USPS is closed. On Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day, all three carriers are shut down.
