Current No-Fly Zone Map: TFRs, Prohibited Areas, and Drone Zones

The current no-fly zone map for U.S. airspace lives at tfr.faa.gov, where the FAA publishes every active Temporary Flight Restriction in real time with coordinates, altitude ceilings, effective dates, and the regulation authorizing each one. That map handles the moving pieces. Permanent prohibited and restricted airspace, drone-specific zones, and special security areas sit on FAA aeronautical sectional charts and inside the FAA-approved B4UFLY apps, and together those sources cover what a pilot or drone operator actually needs before takeoff.

Where to Check Before You Fly

For manned aircraft, the two sources to check are the TFR page and current sectional charts. TFRs appear and disappear daily, so the map at tfr.faa.gov is the one that has to be checked before every flight. Sectionals show the fixed restrictions: prohibited areas, restricted areas, military operations areas, and national security areas, with boundaries, altitudes, and times of use. The FAA updates sectionals on regular cycles through its online chart supplement.

For drone operators, the FAA has approved five providers to deliver the same information through the B4UFLY service: Airspace Link, Aloft, AutoPylot, Avision, and UASidekick.1Federal Aviation Administration. B4UFLY These apps pull official FAA data and show a plain status indicator for any location, flagging controlled airspace, active TFRs, national parks, and military training routes. The Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability system, known as LAANC, layers on top of that. Part 107 pilots and recreational flyers can use LAANC to request near-real-time authorization to fly in controlled airspace near airports at or below 400 feet.2Federal Aviation Administration. What Appears on the Live TFR Map

The FAA issues Temporary Flight Restrictions through the Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system under several different regulations, each tied to a specific trigger.3Federal Aviation Administration. Chapter 20 Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) – Section 1 General Information The common ones are wildfires, hazardous material spills, volcanic eruptions, disaster relief operations, hijacking incidents, space launch activities, and major sporting events.

Sporting event TFRs follow a standard template. The restricted airspace normally extends three nautical miles from the center of the event and up to 2,500 feet above the surface, though the FAA can adjust those dimensions.4eCFR. 14 CFR Part 91 Subpart B – Flight Rules – Section 91.145 These TFRs are active only during the event and typically appear in the NOTAM system days in advance.

Presidential and VIP Restrictions

When the President, Vice President, or other designated officials travel, the FAA publishes a TFR that prohibits flight contrary to the restrictions in the NOTAM.5eCFR. 14 CFR 91.141 – Flight Restrictions in the Proximity of the Presidential and Other Parties These are usually built as two concentric rings. The inner ring runs about 10 to 12 nautical miles in radius from the surface to roughly 18,000 feet and functions as a total no-fly zone. The outer ring extends to about 30 nautical miles with less severe but still significant restrictions. VIP TFRs can appear with little advance notice and can shut down operations at airports inside the affected area, so pilots near major metropolitan areas or common presidential travel routes should check NOTAMs immediately before every flight.

Permanent Prohibited and Restricted Airspace

Fixed restrictions don’t appear on the TFR map because they never turn off. They’re charted on sectionals and split into two categories.

Prohibited Areas

A Prohibited Area bans all flight. No aircraft may operate inside one without permission from the using or controlling agency.6eCFR. 14 CFR 91.133 – Restricted and Prohibited Areas The best-known are P-56A over the White House, Capitol, and National Mall, and P-56B, a half-mile radius around the U.S. Naval Observatory. Unauthorized entry can trigger military interception.

Restricted Areas

Restricted Areas don’t ban flight outright, but they contain hazards that make unauthorized entry dangerous: live-fire artillery, aerial gunnery, missile testing.7Federal Aviation Administration. Section 4 Special Use Airspace – Section 3-4-3 Restricted Areas They’re designated under 14 CFR Part 73, with boundaries, altitudes, and times of use published in the Federal Register and on sectional charts. For joint-use restricted areas shared between the military and civilian aviation, ATC will let aircraft through when the area is not active and has been released to the FAA. When active, ATC will route aircraft around it unless the pilot has direct permission from the using agency.

National Security Areas

National Security Areas cover ground facilities that need increased security. Compliance is normally voluntary, meaning pilots are requested to avoid them but not legally required to.8Federal Aviation Administration. Under 14 CFR 99.7, the FAA can issue special security instructions that make the restriction mandatory, disseminated through NOTAMs.9eCFR. 14 CFR 99.7 – Special Security Instructions

Washington, D.C. Is Its Own System

Washington has the most complex airspace in the country, stacked on top of P-56A and P-56B. The D.C. Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) is a large zone around the capital where extra equipment, communication, and flight plan rules apply to all aircraft. Any pilot flying VFR inside the SFRA must file and activate an SFRA flight plan and receive a discrete transponder code from ATC before entering. The aircraft must carry a two-way radio and an operating automatic altitude-reporting transponder, and the pilot must maintain continuous communication with ATC. The default VFR code of 1200 is not permitted.10eCFR. Subpart V – Washington DC Metropolitan Area Special Flight Rules Area

Inside the SFRA sits the Flight Restricted Zone (FRZ) around the core of the capital. Before departing from or entering the FRZ, all aircraft other than military, law enforcement, and air ambulance flights with FAA/TSA authorization must file and activate an IFR or DC FRZ flight plan and transmit an assigned transponder code. Three FRZ airports, College Park, Potomac Airfield, and Washington Executive/Hyde Field, have their own additional plan requirements for every departure and arrival. On top of that, any VFR pilot flying within a 60-nautical-mile radius of the Washington DCA VOR/DME must complete a Special Awareness Training course and carry the certificate. Drone-Specific Zones

Drones inherit every restriction that applies to manned aircraft and add more. Under Part 107, a drone may not fly higher than 400 feet above ground level, with a narrow exception when flying within 400 feet of a structure. No drone may operate in Class B, C, or D airspace, or within the surface area of Class E airspace designated for an airport, without prior ATC authorization. LAANC is the fastest way to get that authorization. Drones are also prohibited from operating in prohibited or restricted areas without permission from the controlling agency.12eCFR. 14 CFR Part 107 – Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems – Section 107.45

All drone pilots required to register their aircraft must now comply with the FAA’s Remote ID rule, which requires the drone to broadcast identification and location during flight. Compliance means a drone with built-in Standard Remote ID or a separate broadcast module attached. Drones without Remote ID equipment can fly only inside an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA), within visual line of sight and inside the FRIA boundary.13Federal Aviation Administration. National Parks

Federal regulations prohibit operating any aircraft, drones included, from National Park Service lands unless the park has specifically designated a location for aircraft use. The rule covers launching, landing, and operating.15eCFR. 36 CFR 2.17 – Aircraft and Air Delivery It applies to the park’s surface, so you cannot take off or land a drone from park property even where the airspace above isn’t otherwise restricted. For manned aircraft, the FAA recommends staying at least 2,000 feet above ground level over noise-sensitive areas, including National Wildlife Refuges. What a Violation Costs

Consequences depend on who you are and what happened. For certificated pilots, the maximum civil penalty per violation is $1,875 under the most recent inflation adjustment. Certificate suspension or revocation is often the harder blow, because the FAA can ground a pilot for months or permanently for reckless or repeated violations.17Federal Register. Drone-specific violations run higher. Operating a drone equipped with a dangerous weapon carries a penalty of up to $31,207 per violation. Knowingly or recklessly interfering with wildfire suppression, law enforcement, or emergency response with a drone can reach $26,116.17Federal Register. Revisions to Civil Penalty Amounts, 2025

If You Cross a Line by Accident

Inadvertent violations happen. If military aircraft intercept you, the fighter will approach on your pilot side and match your speed and heading. A slow, level turn from the fighter means follow. An abrupt turn across your nose, sometimes with flares, is a warning to turn immediately in the fighter’s direction. A fighter circling an airport with landing gear down and overflying a runway means land there.18Federal Aviation Administration. In-Flight Intercept Procedures Throughout, try to raise the emergency guard frequency 121.5 MHz and identify yourself, your position, and the nature of your flight.

After the fact, filing a report with NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) within 10 days can protect you from the harshest enforcement. To qualify for penalty mitigation, the violation must have been inadvertent, must not involve a criminal offense or an accident, and you must not have had a prior FAA enforcement action within the previous five years. If those conditions are met and the report is filed within 10 days of the violation or of when you learned of it, the FAA will waive the sanction.19Aviation Safety Reporting System.
