A charge labeled “Curb Mobility” on your bank or credit card statement is payment for a licensed taxi ride processed through the Curb system. Curb runs a ride-hailing app in roughly two dozen U.S. cities, and it also powers the credit card terminals installed in the back seats of many traditional cabs. So a Curb Mobility charge can appear even if you never downloaded the app: you paid with a card in a yellow cab, and the transaction was routed through Curb.
Why the Charge Looks Unfamiliar
The merchant name on your statement varies. You might see CURB MOBILITY, CURB SVC TAXI, CURB TAXI NYC, CURB APP PAYMENT, or CURB PAIR & PAY, sometimes with a city abbreviation attached like CURB SVC TAXI NEW Y or CURB SVC TAXI LONG ISL. If you recently took a taxi in a city where Curb operates, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Miami, Las Vegas, Boston, or Seattle, the charge almost certainly matches that ride.1Curb. What’s Inside the Total
The single line on your statement bundles the fare, tolls, surcharges, and tip. How the fare itself was calculated depends on how you got the ride.
Rides Booked in the App
When you request a taxi through Curb, the app shows an upfront price before you confirm. That price factors in distance, traffic, and historical trip data, and it includes applicable tolls and any locally required surcharges. It does not include the tip.2Curb. How Are NYC Fares Calculated? If your statement shows more than the fare you saw at booking, the gap is usually the tip.
Street Hails and Pair & Pay
If you flagged the cab down and paid at the terminal, or used Curb’s Pair & Pay feature after hailing, the fare comes from the vehicle’s taximeter at rates set by the local taxi commission.2Curb. How Are NYC Fares Calculated? The meter accumulates based on distance and time, then surcharges and tip are added into one charge.
Tolls, Surcharges, and Default Tips
Tolls are added automatically at E-ZPass rates when the driver passes through a toll zone, so they don’t appear as a separate line item.3Curb. Driver FAQ’s City-specific fees like congestion pricing or improvement surcharges are folded in the same way. The tip finishes the total. Curb lets you set a default tip in the app under “Payments,” and that default applies to every ride until you change it.4Curb. How Do I Set a Default Tip? A default you forgot about is a common reason the charge feels higher than the fare you remember.
Charges Without a Completed Ride
Two situations produce a Curb Mobility charge even though no trip happened. If you cancel an app-booked ride after a driver is assigned, Curb may charge a cancellation fee of around $3.00, with the exact amount varying by market.5Curb Driver. Taxi Cancellation Fee If the driver arrives and you don’t show within five minutes, a $5.00 no-show fee applies.6Curb. FAQ Drivers
A pending charge that looks slightly too large is usually an authorization hold. Curb places one when you request a ride or pair with a cab to confirm funds are available, and it often exceeds the actual fare by a small margin. Holds are removed within three to five business days, then replaced by the final settled amount.7Curb. Rider App Support Debit cards can lag, since the release timing sits with your bank. If a hold hasn’t cleared after five business days, call the bank rather than Curb.
Identifying the Specific Ride
Before you dispute anything, match the statement charge to a receipt. Every trip has an alphanumeric Trip ID at the top of the emailed receipt. You can also find it in the app under Ride History. If you paid at the terminal without using the app, request a trip receipt through Curb’s website.8Curb. Contact Us Also pull the date and rough time of the ride, the last four digits of the card, and the exact dollar amount on the statement. Comparing the two figures usually settles whether the charge is right, wrong, or a hold that hasn’t dropped off yet.
Disputing With Curb First
If the numbers don’t line up, email rider support at support@gocurb.com or call (718) 222-0600.8Curb. Contact Us Include the Trip ID, the charge amount, and a short description of the issue. You should get an automated acknowledgment quickly, followed by a review of the meter logs and payment records over the next few business days. Approved refunds typically take five to ten business days to post to your original payment method. Save the confirmation email, and reply to the same thread if you need to follow up.
One reason to start with Curb rather than jumping to your bank: Curb’s terms of service reserve the right to suspend accounts at the company’s discretion.9Curb. Terms of Service The terms don’t spell out that a bank chargeback triggers suspension, but going around Curb before letting it try to resolve the issue puts your account at risk.
Escalating to Your Credit Card Issuer
If Curb won’t fix the charge, or if you don’t recognize it at all and suspect it’s unauthorized, you have a separate right to dispute it with your card issuer. Federal law gives you 60 days from the date your issuer sends the statement containing the disputed charge to submit a written billing error notice.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors Don’t let a slow exchange with Curb burn through that window.
Once your issuer receives the dispute, it must acknowledge the notice within 30 days and complete its investigation within two full billing cycles, capped at 90 days.11Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation Z 1026.13 – Billing Error Resolution While the investigation runs, the issuer cannot report the disputed amount as delinquent or try to collect it. Your notice should include your name and account number, the dollar amount at issue, and a short explanation of why you think it’s wrong. Most issuers let you start the dispute by phone or through their app, but following up in writing protects your rights more reliably.
These protections apply to credit cards. If the Curb Mobility charge hit a debit card, the Electronic Fund Transfer Act governs instead, and its protections are weaker with shorter reporting deadlines. For a debit card charge you want to dispute, call your bank as soon as you spot it.
