CS Delta GC Charge: What It Is and How to Dispute It

A “CS Delta GC” charge on your credit card statement is a Delta Air Lines gift card purchase, bought through the airline’s digital gift card portal run by a vendor called CashStar. The amount will usually fall between $50 and $2,000, matching the denominations Delta sells online.1Delta Air Lines. Delta Gift Card FAQs If you recognize it, you’re done. If you don’t, you have 60 days from the statement date to dispute it in writing with your card issuer, and your maximum liability for an unauthorized charge is capped at $50 under federal law.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1643 – Liability of Holder of Credit Card

What the Descriptor Actually Says

Delta’s gift card purchases post as “Delta Air Lines GC,” though many banks truncate the merchant name and show it as “CS Delta GC” instead.3Delta Air Lines. Delta eGift Cards from CashStar FAQs The “GC” is gift card. The “CS” is CashStar, the third-party vendor that fulfills Delta’s digital gift cards through buy.giftcards.delta.com. Different banks truncate differently, which is why the exact wording varies from one statement to the next.

The charge covers the gift card and nothing else. Delta sells cards in amounts from $50 to $2,000, so a charge outside that range probably isn’t a gift card at all and may be a different Delta transaction that your bank has labeled oddly.1Delta Air Lines. Check the Obvious Explanations First

Before you treat the charge as fraud, consider whether someone close to you bought a Delta gift card and used the card on file. Gift card purchases are easy to forget, especially around holidays, birthdays, and work-related gifting. Check the date on your statement against anything happening around that time.

Someone else may also have sent you a Delta eGift card by email. If a family member or friend used your card by mistake, or had prior permission to do so, the charge still lands on your statement even though you’re the recipient of the card itself.

How to Confirm It’s a Real Purchase

Search your email for messages from Delta or CashStar. Purchase confirmations arrive within minutes of the transaction and include the amount, denomination, and a reference number. If an email matches the statement amount and date, the charge is almost certainly yours.

Disputing an Unauthorized Charge

You have two things to do, and they’re independent: contact Delta, and open a formal dispute with your credit card issuer. Do both.

Email deltagiftcards@delta.com to report the unauthorized purchase.4Delta Air Lines. Travel Gift Cards and eGifts for Travelers If the gift card hasn’t been redeemed yet, Delta may be able to freeze or cancel it before someone spends it. Include the exact charge amount and date from your statement. For reservations issues more broadly, you can also call 800-225-1366 or 800-225-2525.

Speed matters. Once a gift card is redeemed against a ticket, recovering the funds is far harder than canceling an unused card.

File a Billing Error Dispute With Your Card Issuer

Federal law caps your liability for unauthorized credit card use at $50, and most major issuers waive even that under zero-liability policies.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1643 – Liability of Holder of Credit Card To preserve those protections, you need to follow the formal dispute process.

Send written notice to your card issuer within 60 days of the statement date that first showed the charge. The notice must include your name, account number, the specific charge you’re disputing, and why you believe it’s an error.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors Send it to the billing inquiries address on your statement, which is different from the payment address. Calling the bank or using the dispute button in the app is a reasonable first step, but the statute specifically requires a written notice, so follow up in writing.

Once the issuer has your notice, it must acknowledge the dispute within 30 days and resolve it within two complete billing cycles, with an outer limit of 90 days. While the investigation is open, the issuer can’t try to collect the disputed amount or report it as delinquent. The issuer may credit your account temporarily, but credit card billing error rules don’t require that temporary credit the way debit card rules under Regulation E do.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation Z 1026.13 – Billing Error Resolution If the investigation confirms the charge was unauthorized, it’s removed permanently along with any finance charges tied to it.

Watch the 60-day clock carefully. It runs from the date the issuer sent the first statement showing the charge, not from the transaction date. If you don’t look at statements regularly, you can lose your federal protections before you’ve even noticed the problem. Past 60 days, your issuer may still investigate as a courtesy, but it’s no longer required to.

Protect the Account Going Forward

If the charge turns out to be fraudulent, the card number itself is compromised. Ask your issuer for a new card number right away; whoever placed the gift card charge still has the old details and can use them again.

Report the fraud to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov in addition to the dispute with your bank.7Federal Trade Commission. Avoiding and Reporting Gift Card Scams Gift cards are a common target in card fraud because they can be redeemed or resold quickly, and the FTC tracks these patterns to support law enforcement.

Be wary of anyone who calls claiming to be from Delta and asks you to confirm a gift card charge by sharing card details or personal information. Delta’s gift card team doesn’t cold-call customers to verify transactions. If you get that kind of call, hang up and contact Delta yourself through the numbers on delta.com.
