If your card was just refused with decline code 05, your bank turned down the transaction and deliberately did not tell the merchant why. Credit card decline code 05, labeled “Do Not Honor,” is the generic refusal issuers send when they want to block a charge without revealing the reason. The fix is almost always a phone call to the number on the back of the card, because only your bank can see what actually triggered the block.
What “Do Not Honor” Actually Means
Code 05 is a standardized response your bank sends back through the card network after evaluating the transaction.1Mastercard Developers. Mastercard Send – Network Response Codes It tells the merchant one thing: the bank refused, and it is not saying why.
That silence is intentional. If a stolen card returned “insufficient funds,” a thief would know the card is live and try a smaller amount. If it returned “fraud suspected,” the thief would move on before getting caught. Lumping most refusals under a single vague code keeps that information away from anyone testing a stolen number. It also means the cashier standing in front of you genuinely cannot troubleshoot the problem, and neither can you from the code alone.
Separate, more specific codes do exist for things like expired cards or restricted accounts. Issuers often default to the generic 05 anyway. Modern fraud systems score every transaction in real time using factors like purchase amount, merchant type, location, time of day, and how the charge compares to your history. When the risk score crosses an internal threshold, the system blocks the charge automatically, and a bank representative sometimes cannot pinpoint exactly why the algorithm flagged it.
What Probably Triggered It
The 05 code hides the cause, but the usual suspects are a short list:
- Insufficient funds or available credit to cover the purchase.
- A per-transaction or daily spending limit set by the bank or on your account.
- A fraud flag on a charge that doesn’t match your pattern — unusually large, in an unfamiliar city, or several attempts back-to-back.
- Out-of-pattern location, particularly international use, without a travel notice on file.2Federal Trade Commission. When a Company Declines Your Credit or Debit Card
- A billing address or three-digit security code that doesn’t match what the bank has on file, common with online or keyed-in transactions.
- Merchant category restrictions on businesses the bank treats as high-risk, such as gambling sites or cryptocurrency exchanges. Issuers often send 05 rather than the specific “restricted card” code, so the real reason stays invisible.3PayJunction Support. What Is a 62 Restricted Card Decline Code
- Temporary holds from hotels, rental cars, or gas station pre-authorizations that reduce your available balance.
Expired cards and unactivated replacements usually produce their own codes (54 for expired), but some issuers route those through 05 as well. If a new card recently arrived in the mail and you haven’t activated it, check that first.
How to Get the Charge Through
Call the number on the back of your card. Not a number from a search engine — the printed one, so you don’t end up on a phishing line. Before dialing, have these ready so the representative can find the attempt quickly:
- The merchant name as it appeared on the terminal or receipt.
- The exact dollar amount.
- The date and approximate time.
- The last four digits of the card you used.
The agent can see the specific reason for the block even though the merchant only got 05. If it was a fraud flag on a legitimate purchase, the representative can typically clear it and open a short authorization window so you can retry within the next few minutes or hours. If a spending limit is the problem, they may adjust it or approve a one-time override. For hotel or rental car holds, they can tell you when the hold releases or push it through faster.2Federal Trade Commission. When a Company Declines Your Credit or Debit Card
Once the block is lifted, ask the merchant to run the card again. The second attempt should go through normally. If it doesn’t, call back. Occasionally the system needs a few minutes to update, or there’s a second issue stacked on the first.
One thing not to expect: a letter in the mail. Federal rules require written explanations when a bank denies a loan, closes an account, or cuts a credit limit, but point-of-sale declines are carved out. Denials at the register for reasons like exceeding a credit limit, suspected fraud, or authorization issues aren’t treated as adverse action.4eCFR. 12 CFR Part 1002 – Equal Credit Opportunity Act (Regulation B) Calling is the only way to find out what happened.
The decline itself won’t touch your credit score either. Credit reports track borrowing and repayment, not individual purchase attempts, so a refused charge leaves no trace. The underlying cause can still matter — a maxed-out card that produced the decline is running high utilization, and utilization does affect your score — but the swipe that got refused doesn’t.
When the Physical Card Works But Apple Pay or Google Pay Doesn’t
If your card runs fine in-store but a mobile wallet keeps returning 05, the problem is usually the stored token rather than your account. Digital wallets don’t transmit your actual card number; they use a tokenized version that the card network maps back to your account. When a card is reissued or the bank updates its systems, the token in your phone can fall out of sync.
Remove the card from the wallet and add it again. That forces the wallet to request a fresh token from the network. If it still won’t work, call the bank and specifically mention that the physical card works but the mobile payment doesn’t. That’s a different troubleshooting path, and it sometimes takes the bank’s back-office team to update the token mapping manually.
Preventing the Next One
Most 05 declines are avoidable with a little setup:
- Set a travel notice before any trip, especially international. Most banks let you do this from the app in under a minute.
- Call ahead for large purchases well above your normal range. A quick heads-up can pre-authorize the charge.
- Turn on transaction alerts so you catch holds, fraud attempts, and balance changes in real time.
- Watch your available balance, not just your account balance. Pending charges and merchant holds shrink what you can actually spend.
- Carry a backup — a card from a different issuer or some cash — so a single decline doesn’t strand you.2Federal Trade Commission. When a Company Declines Your Credit or Debit Card
If 05 keeps hitting at the same kind of business — gambling, cryptocurrency, adult entertainment — your issuer likely has a blanket restriction on that merchant category, and no amount of calling ahead will change that. Ask the bank directly whether it allows charges of that type. If it doesn’t, use a card from an issuer that does.
