CRA Tax Return Processing Time: NETFILE, Delays, and Assessment

The Canada Revenue Agency’s CRA tax return processing time is about two weeks for returns filed electronically through NETFILE or EFILE, and about 12 weeks for paper returns received at a tax centre.1Canada Revenue Agency. Service Standards 2025-2026 Those targets assume you filed on or before the deadline and your return doesn’t need extra review. Several common situations push the actual timeline well beyond them.

The Two-Week and 12-Week Standards

Digital filing is the fast lane. If you use NETFILE to file your own return, or EFILE through a tax preparer, the CRA aims to issue your Notice of Assessment within two weeks of receiving the return. Digital returns flow straight into the CRA’s automated matching systems without manual keying, which is why they clear so quickly.2Canada Revenue Agency. Go Digital and File Your Taxes Online

Paper returns take roughly six times longer. The service standard is 12 weeks measured from the day the CRA receives your envelope, not the day you dropped it in the mailbox. Postal transit, physical sorting, and manual data entry all sit inside that window.1Canada Revenue Agency. Service Standards 2025-2026

Both targets apply only to returns filed on or before the deadline. For most individuals filing for the 2025 tax year, that means April 30, 2026. Self-employed filers and their spouses have until June 15, 2026, to file, although any balance owing is still due April 30.3Canada Revenue Agency. What Has to Be Right for the Two-Week Target to Hold

The single fastest way to slow your assessment is to file with information that doesn’t match what the CRA already has on file from third parties. Your Social Insurance Number is the identifier the CRA uses to cross-check your return against slips submitted by employers, banks, and other institutions.4Government of Canada. Social Insurance Number – Overview A single wrong digit can send the return into manual review.

Wait for your slips before you file. T4s from employers, T5s from financial institutions, and other information slips are typically issued by the end of February. Filing early with figures that don’t line up with what issuers reported to the CRA triggers a review and pushes you well past the two-week window.5Canada Revenue Agency. Two other basics matter. Keep your mailing address current so correspondence reaches you. Set up direct deposit in your CRA My Account, because refunds arrive electronically on the same date your return is assessed instead of waiting on a mailed cheque.

Returns That Can’t Use NETFILE

Some returns are simply not eligible for electronic filing, which means the 12-week paper timeline applies whether you want it to or not. The most common exclusions:

  • A final return for a deceased taxpayer.
  • Any return for a year involving bankruptcy.
  • Deemed residents who don’t pay provincial or territorial tax.
  • Returns for tax years outside the 2018 through 2025 range NETFILE accepts.

Further restrictions apply to returns claiming certain specialized credits, reporting income from specific international sources, or including more than 12 sets of financial statements.6Canada Revenue Agency. Situations That Push Past the Standard Window

Some returns take longer no matter how you file, because they need specialized review.

A return for someone who has died requires the legal representative to submit proof of authority, such as a copy of the will naming an executor or letters of administration. The CRA has to verify that documentation and apply rules about income earned before and after the date of death before the assessment can be completed.7Canada Revenue Agency. Non-resident filers and people living outside Canada often see added delays because their returns may involve foreign income reporting and tax treaty provisions that need specialized handling.

Bankruptcy adds its own layer. The trustee has to notify the CRA using Form DC905 and coordinate with the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy. A return for a bankruptcy year must be split into pre-bankruptcy, in-bankruptcy, and post-bankruptcy periods, and these returns are often routed to specialized review teams.9Canada Revenue Agency. The CRA can also select any return for a pre-assessment review to verify specific claims. If that happens, you’ll typically receive a letter asking for supporting documents, and processing pauses until you respond.

Checking Where Your Return Stands

Once you’ve filed, the Progress tracker in your CRA My Account shows exactly where the return is in the pipeline. You’ll see one of three statuses:

  • Received. The CRA has your return but hasn’t started reviewing it.
  • In progress. Your return is under review.
  • Assessed. The review is complete and your Notice of Assessment has been issued.

The Progress tracker also shows a target completion date, so you know roughly when to expect a result.10Canada Revenue Agency. Progress Tracker You can also check by calling the CRA’s automated Tax Information Phone Service at 1-800-267-6999 and entering your SIN and identifying details.

When the Notice of Assessment Arrives

The Notice of Assessment is the document that officially closes the review. It shows the CRA’s calculation of your income, the credits and deductions allowed, and your final balance owing or refund amount.11Canada Revenue Agency. Notices of Assessment – NOA or NOR – Personal Income Tax

If you’re registered for online mail in My Account, the notice appears there as soon as the return is processed, which in most cases is immediate. Without online mail, you wait for a paper copy. Refunds arrive by direct deposit on the same date the notice is issued, provided you’ve set direct deposit up.11Canada Revenue Agency. Notices of Assessment – NOA or NOR – Personal Income Tax

Fixing a Return After It’s Assessed

If you spot an error or forgot a deduction after your assessment, you have two online routes: the ReFILE service through your tax software, or Change my return in CRA My Account. Online adjustments are processed in about two weeks. Paper adjustments submitted on Form T1-ADJ take about eight weeks.12Canada Revenue Agency. Changing a Tax Return – Personal Income Tax

Those timelines only cover straightforward changes. Complex adjustments can take up to 45 weeks. Complex includes anything involving multiple tax years, carryback amounts, split-pension elections, bankruptcy, or a deceased taxpayer. It also includes requests where the CRA has to come back to you for additional documents.12Canada Revenue Agency. Changing a Tax Return – Personal Income Tax
