The Costco tire warranty is actually three overlapping protections that come bundled with every tire bought at a Costco Tire Center: a five-year road hazard warranty from Costco, the tire manufacturer’s own defect and mileage warranty, and lifetime maintenance services including rotation, balancing, and flat repair. You pay nothing extra for any of it beyond the tire price, provided you’re a current Costco member and the tires were installed at a Costco warehouse.
What the Road Hazard Warranty Covers
Costco’s road hazard warranty is the piece most owners end up using. It covers passenger, performance, and light truck tires that become unusable because of ordinary road damage: cuts, non-repairable punctures, and impact breaks from potholes or debris.1Costco Tire Center. Coverage runs for 60 months from the purchase date, or until the tread wears down to 2/32 of an inch (1.6 mm), whichever comes first.2Costco Tire Center. Costco Road Hazard Warranty Online posts occasionally refer to a “lifetime” road hazard warranty at Costco, but the 60-month cap has been in place since at least 2005.3Car Talk Community. How the Prorated Credit Is Calculated
You do not get a free replacement under the road hazard warranty. You get a credit toward a new tire, prorated by how much tread the damaged tire has left.
Costco defines usable tread as the original depth minus 2/32 of an inch. The credit equals the percentage of usable tread remaining multiplied by what you originally paid for that tire, after any discounts. A nearly new tire yields a credit close to full purchase price; a tire that’s mostly worn yields very little. Mileage and time within the five-year window do not factor in — only remaining tread.1Costco Tire Center. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions The credit applies to the damaged tire only, not to the others on the vehicle.
What’s Not Covered
The road hazard warranty excludes several common causes of tire damage:
- Vandalism and collision damage.
- Commercial use, racing, and off-road driving.
- Damage from snow chains or studs.
- Rapid or irregular wear caused by misaligned wheels, worn suspension, or underinflation.
- Tires that have been moved to a different vehicle.
Loss of time, inconvenience, loss of vehicle use, and other consequential damages are also excluded.1Costco Tire Center. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions
How to File a Claim
Bring the damaged tire and your original purchase receipt to a Costco Tire Center. You must be the original purchaser, and you’ll sign a Costco tire adjustment form at the counter.2Costco Tire Center. Costco Road Hazard Warranty The written terms require the original receipt and do not describe an electronic lookup through your membership account, so keep the paper.1Costco Tire Center. You’re also expected to have maintained the tires: regular rotation, proper balance, and inflation to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Costco repairs tires following USTMA standards and warns against sealants like Fix-a-Flat, which can render a tire non-repairable and complicate a claim.2Costco Tire Center. One thing to know before you hand the tire over: submitting a tire for a warranty claim transfers ownership of it to Costco or the manufacturer, whether or not the claim is approved. Even on an approved claim, you still pay for taxes, mounting, balancing, valve stems, and disposal on the replacement.4Firestone Tire. Bridgestone Warranty Manual Costco
The Manufacturer’s Warranty Is Separate
Every tire also carries the tire maker’s own limited warranty covering defects in workmanship and materials. This is the coverage that applies when something is wrong with the tire itself rather than something that happened to it on the road. Manufacturer warranties explicitly exclude road hazard damage like punctures, cuts, and impact breaks, which is where Costco’s own coverage picks up.4Firestone Tire. Terms vary by brand. Bridgestone and Firestone passenger and light truck tires sold at Costco include free replacement for up to three years from purchase (with proof of purchase), then prorated coverage up to five years. Many of these tires also carry a Limited Mileage Warranty: if they wear evenly down to the tread wear indicators before reaching the warranted mileage, you get a prorated credit based on the ratio of miles driven to the warranted mileage. Bridgestone and Firestone add a 90 Day Buy & Try Guarantee on most sets of four, letting you exchange the full set for a credit toward a different set if you’re not satisfied, limited to one set per vehicle in any 15-month period.4Firestone Tire. Michelin tires come with the Michelin Promise Plan, which includes a 60-day satisfaction guarantee for exchange on a set of equal or lesser value, plus three years of 24/7 roadside assistance covering flat changes, fluid delivery, lockout, jump starts, and towing up to 150 miles to an authorized Michelin retailer when there’s no inflated spare. Michelin’s defect warranty runs for the life of the original usable tread or six years from purchase, whichever comes first, and mileage terms depend on the specific tire line.5Michelin. Lifetime Services Included With the Tire
Every tire purchase from a Costco Tire Center comes with free installation and lifetime maintenance for as long as you own the tires:
- Tire rotation.
- Balancing.
- Inflation pressure checks (Costco uses nitrogen).
- Flat repairs.
- New rubber valve stems with installation.
TPMS valve stems and service packs are the one exception, at $2.99 per tire.6Costco Tire Center. Costco Advantage7Yahoo Autos. Costco TPMS Sensor Cost Costco inflates with nitrogen rather than compressed air and provides self-service nitrogen stations at warehouse locations. Nitrogen inflation itself isn’t listed as a warranty requirement, but maintaining proper pressure is.8Costco Customer Service. Tire Center FAQs
Flat repair is free, but not every puncture qualifies. Costco considers a tire repairable only when it wasn’t driven on while flat, the damage is in the tread area, and the puncture is less than 1/4 inch. Repairs are made by patching from the inside; Costco advises against plug-only repairs, noting they can be unreliable and may lead to blowouts.9Costco Tire Center. Tire Tips A puncture that’s too large or located in the sidewall is non-repairable and falls under the road hazard warranty for a prorated credit instead.

How Costco Compares to Sam’s Club, Discount Tire, and Walmart
Costco’s package is unusual mainly because the road hazard coverage and installation are included in the tire price rather than sold as add-ons.
- Sam’s Club includes a four-year road hazard warranty and charges $20 per tire for installation. Sam’s Club also bundles four years of emergency roadside assistance for towing and fuel delivery, which Costco does not offer directly, though Michelin tires carry their own roadside program.11Jalopnik. Costco vs Sam’s Club Tires Best Deal
- Discount Tire sells road hazard coverage as a separate certificate at roughly 15 to 16 percent of the tire price, lasting three years. Lifetime rotation and balancing are included, but tire disposal costs extra.12Cheapism. Best Price Tire Installation
- Walmart has the lowest base installation price but charges $10 per wheel for optional road hazard coverage that only applies during the first 25 percent of tread life. Included service is limited to a one-time rotation and balance.12Cheapism. Best Price Tire Installation
Habits That Keep the Coverage Valid
A few habits make the difference between a smooth claim and a denied one:
- Keep the original receipt. Both the road hazard warranty and the manufacturer’s warranty call for it, and without proof of purchase the manufacturer’s coverage may default to a shorter window measured from the tire’s date of manufacture.4Firestone Tire. Bridgestone Warranty Manual Costco
- Rotate on schedule, keep inflation at the vehicle manufacturer’s spec, and fix alignment or suspension issues before they chew up the tread. Irregular wear from neglected maintenance is grounds for denial.1Costco Tire Center. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions
- Skip sealants. Fix-a-Flat and similar products can render a tire non-repairable.2Costco Tire Center. Costco Road Hazard Warranty
- Re-torque the lug nuts 25 miles after any tire service.2Costco Tire Center. Costco Road Hazard Warranty
- Don’t move the tires to another vehicle. Doing so voids the road hazard warranty, and the coverage doesn’t transfer with the car if you sell it.1Costco Tire Center. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions
