Anyone Charging You Is Not the SSA
If a website or service asks you to pay for help getting a Social Security card, treat that as a warning. Private companies sometimes charge to fill out the same free application you can complete yourself, and they offer no advantage; you still have to provide your documents directly to Social Security.1Social Security Administration. Federal law also limits what these operators can do. What You Might Pay for Supporting Documents
The card is free. Getting the documents SSA needs to process your application is where money can come in, and only if you don’t already have them. Fees vary by state and by the agency that issues each document.
- A certified copy of a birth certificate from a state vital records office generally costs between $18 and $31.
- A first-time U.S. passport book, if you’re using it as your proof of citizenship and identity, runs $130 for the application fee plus a $35 facility acceptance fee, totaling $165.4U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees
- A replacement state ID or driver’s license typically ranges from free to about $40.
- A certified marriage certificate or divorce decree usually costs $9 to $35 through local or state courts.
Most people already have at least one document SSA will accept, so the practical cost of a replacement card ends up at zero. The out-of-pocket total is only meaningful if you have to start from scratch on identity paperwork.
You May Not Need a Replacement Card at All
Before spending any time or money on supporting documents, consider whether you need the physical card. The SSA itself says that in most cases, simply knowing your Social Security number is enough.5Social Security Administration. The situations where you truly need the physical card are narrower than people assume. A new employer might ask to see it for I-9 verification, but a passport or a combination of other documents can serve the same purpose on that form. The card matters most for a first-time application, a correction to an error, or an update after a legal name change.
There’s a Limit on How Many Replacements You Can Get
Cost isn’t only measured in dollars. The SSA caps replacement cards at three per calendar year and ten over your lifetime.6Social Security Administration. If you’ve hit the cap, the SSA can still grant an exception case by case when you can show significant hardship. One example the SSA gives is a referral letter from a government social services agency stating that you need to show the card to receive benefits.6Social Security Administration. How to Apply Without Paying Anyone
You have three ways to apply, all free through the SSA itself.
Online
The fastest route for a straightforward replacement is a free my Social Security account at ssa.gov. To use it, you must be a U.S. citizen age 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address, hold a driver’s license or state-issued ID from a participating state, and not be requesting any changes to the card such as a name update.9Social Security Administration. In Person
Bring a completed Form SS-5 and your original documents to your local Social Security office. Staff verify the documents and hand them back on the spot, so you never have to mail sensitive paperwork. By Mail
Send Form SS-5 and your original supporting documents to your local SSA field office. Make copies of everything first. SSA returns your originals after processing, but a backup protects you if something goes missing in transit. Once the SSA approves your application, the new card arrives by mail within 5 to 10 business days,5Social Security Administration. Replace Social Security Card and you’ll have paid the SSA nothing for it.
