Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork for BCBA: Hours and 2027 Changes

Concentrated supervised fieldwork for the BCBA credential requires 1,500 hours completed under a qualified supervisor, with at least 10% of each month’s hours directly supervised, a minimum of 20 hours logged per month, six supervisor contacts, and 90 cumulative minutes of client observation each supervisory period. The pathway shortens the total hour requirement by 500 compared to standard supervised fieldwork, but doubles the required supervision percentage and adds tighter oversight throughout.

Hours and Monthly Supervision

The concentrated pathway runs on 1,500 total fieldwork hours, versus 2,000 for the standard track. Each supervisory period is one calendar month, and at least 10% of your hours in that period must be supervised, meaning your supervisor is present and actively providing oversight.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. BCBA Handbook The standard track sits at 5%, so concentrated fieldwork roughly doubles your required face time with a supervisor.

You have to log at least 20 fieldwork hours in a month for it to count at all. You also need at least six supervisor-trainee contacts within that month, and each contact should involve meaningful feedback, skill review, or case discussion rather than a routine check-in.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. BCBA Handbook

If you miss the 10% supervision threshold or the six-contact minimum, you cannot add extra supervision later to patch the month. Instead, you reduce the fieldwork hours you claim for that month until the math works. A bad supervision month directly shrinks the hours you can bank toward your 1,500.

Client Observation

Your supervisor must observe you working directly with a client for at least 90 cumulative minutes each supervisory period. The standard pathway only requires 60 minutes. In-person observation is preferred, but the BACB also accepts recorded video (asynchronous) and live video conference (synchronous) formats. When observation happens live and your supervisor provides feedback during or right after, those minutes can count toward both supervision hours and fieldwork hours.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Individual and Group Supervision

At least 50% of your supervised hours each month must come from individual, one-on-one meetings with your supervisor. Group supervision can fill the rest, but it can never exceed individual supervision time in a given supervisory period.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. BCBA Handbook If a month ends with more group than individual hours, you reduce the group total until it equals or falls below the individual total, and that reduction happens before you calculate your supervision percentage.

Restricted Versus Unrestricted Activities

Not all fieldwork hours count the same way. At least 60% of your total hours must be unrestricted activities, which are the tasks a practicing BCBA handles beyond direct client sessions: designing data collection systems, writing behavior intervention plans, conducting intake interviews, giving feedback to registered behavior technicians on their implementation, running risk-benefit analyses before starting new interventions, and developing discharge plans.2Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Fieldwork: Getting It Right There is no ceiling on unrestricted hours.

Restricted activities are direct client service hours, like running therapy sessions or implementing behavior reduction procedures. These cap at 40% of your total. The split exists because the BACB wants trainees spending most of their time on the analytic and supervisory work that defines the BCBA role. Trainees working as registered behavior technicians during fieldwork often find this challenging, since RBT work is almost entirely restricted activity. If your workplace does not naturally generate enough unrestricted hours, raise it with your supervisor early.

Who Can Supervise Your Fieldwork

Your supervisor must be an active Board Certified Behavior Analyst in good standing with the BACB.3Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Supervision, Assessment, Training, and Oversight Before January 1, 2026, licensed psychologists certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology and certain non-certified Verified Course Sequence instructors could also serve as supervisors. Hours accrued under those individuals remain valid through December 31, 2031, but no new supervision relationships with non-BCBA supervisors can begin after the 2026 cutoff.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. BCBA Handbook

Every supervisor must complete an 8-hour supervision training based on the BACB’s Supervisor Training Curriculum Outline before supervision begins, and that training must align with the current version of the curriculum.3Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Supervision, Assessment, Training, and Oversight If the BACB determines a supervisor was not qualified during a period you logged hours, those hours can be rejected.

Dual relationships are prohibited. Your supervisor cannot be a family member, a close personal friend, or someone you have authority over in another context.

The Supervision Contract

Before you log a single hour, you and your supervisor must sign a written supervision contract.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. BCBA Handbook The BACB requires the contract to include:

  • Responsibilities of each party, including the supervisor’s completion of the 8-hour training
  • Training objectives individualized to your skill level and development needs
  • Objective, measurable conditions under which your supervisor will decline to sign your Monthly or Final Fieldwork Verification Forms
  • Consequences for noncompliance, including how the relationship can be properly terminated
  • A statement requiring written permission from your on-site employer or manager where applicable
  • An attestation that both parties will follow the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts
  • A declaration that both parties will keep the contract and all supervision documentation for at least seven years and provide everything to the BACB on request

If multiple supervisors at one organization oversee your fieldwork, one contract can cover all of them, but it must spell out each supervisor’s role and be signed by every party. Amendments need signatures and dates from everyone involved.

Documentation and Monthly Forms

Careless documentation is where hours get lost. The BACB requires daily activity logs with the date, start and end times, and what you did during each session. Every entry has to distinguish restricted from unrestricted activity and note whether supervision was individual or group.

At the end of each month, you and your supervisor transfer daily totals to the official Monthly Fieldwork Verification Form (M-FVF). When all 1,500 hours are complete, you use the Final Fieldwork Verification Form (F-FVF). These are BACB-issued templates that must be used as provided, and the monthly form must be signed by the last day of the calendar month following the supervision month.4Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Monthly Fieldwork Verification Form: Individual Supervisor

The monthly form captures your BACB ID, the state and country where fieldwork occurred, independent hours (supervisor not present), supervised hours (supervisor present), observation hours within the supervised total, the overall total, and the supervision percentage. Both parties attest that the information is accurate and that all fieldwork complied with BACB requirements and the ethics code.4Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Keep every log and form for at least seven years from the date of your final supervision meeting. The BACB conducts audits, and if selected, you will need to produce all of it.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. BCBA Handbook Missing documents mean lost hours with no way to reconstruct them after the fact.

After the 1,500 Hours

Once your fieldwork is complete and the Final Fieldwork Verification Form is signed, you apply through your BACB account online and pay a $105 application processing fee. The BACB will not begin review until the fee clears.5Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Board Certified Behavior Analyst Approval opens a two-year authorization window in which to pass the BCBA examination through Pearson VUE, which charges a $125 scheduling fee.6Pearson VUE. Changes Taking Effect January 1, 2027

The BACB has published revised requirements that take effect on January 1, 2027, and several changes touch the concentrated pathway.7Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Recent and Upcoming Changes to BACB Requirements The supervision percentage drops from 10% to 7.5% of hours per supervisory period. The maximum fieldwork hours per supervisory period increases to 160 for both pathways. The 20-hour monthly minimum, the six-contact requirement, and the 90-minute observation requirement all remain in place.8Behavior Analyst Certification Board. 2027 BCBA Requirements

Applicants must meet the requirements in effect at the time they apply, regardless of when hours were earned. If you are accumulating hours under current rules but will not submit until after January 1, 2027, confirm with the BACB which standards apply before you file.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board.
