Combo card processing time currently averages 4.3 months for fiscal year 2026, based on USCIS data covering cases completed between October 2025 and February 2026.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Historic Processing Times That figure covers Form I-765 filed in the (c)(9) category — the work-and-travel card issued to people with a pending Form I-485 green card application. It is nearly double the 2.2-month average from fiscal year 2025, and it hides wide variation between service centers and filing periods. Your case may run faster or slower.
What the Average Means for Your Case
The national average is a rough guidepost, not a promise. What actually governs your case is the “case inquiry date” USCIS publishes for each form type. If your application has been pending longer than that threshold, you can submit a formal inquiry; until then, USCIS will not treat the delay as outside normal. When a form type has no published processing time at all, the agency asks you to wait six months before making an inquiry.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Check Case Processing
Track your case with the 13-character receipt number printed on your Form I-797C receipt notice. Enter it into the USCIS Case Status Online tool to see whether your case is received, being reviewed, approved, or in the mail.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Checking Your Case Status Online A myUSCIS account shows more, including digital notices and full filing history.
USCIS considers a case “actively processing” if one of three things happened in the past 60 days: you received a notice, you responded to a request for evidence, or your online status was updated.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Check Case Processing If none of that has happened and you’re past the posted processing time, a service request is the next step.
One filing detail worth confirming, because it costs applicants time when they get it wrong: most adjustment applicants use eligibility category (c)(9) on the I-765, but refugees adjusting under INA section 209 use (a)(3) and asylees use (a)(5). The wrong code can produce a denial and send you back to the start of the queue.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-765 Instructions
Why the Wait Matters More Than It Used To
Two policy changes in late 2025 changed the stakes of processing time for combo card holders, and anyone filing now needs to understand both.
USCIS reduced the maximum validity of employment authorization documents in the (c)(9) category from five years to 18 months. The change took effect December 5, 2025, and applies to all applications pending or filed on or after that date.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Employment Authorization Validity – Policy Alert Green card applications routinely take longer than 18 months, which means a renewal is likely.
USCIS also ended the automatic extension for renewal EAD applications. Before October 30, 2025, filing a timely renewal automatically extended an expiring card for up to 540 days, keeping you authorized to work during the wait. That automatic extension no longer applies to renewals filed on or after October 30, 2025. Renewals filed before that date that already triggered an automatic extension remain unaffected.6Federal Register. Removal of the Automatic Extension of Employment Authorization Documents
Put those two changes together against a 4.3-month average processing time and the math is uncomfortable. With an 18-month card and no automatic extension, a real gap can open between the day your card expires and the day the new one arrives. File your renewal as early as USCIS allows — up to six months before expiration — to give the queue as much runway as possible.
Options If Your Case Is Taking Too Long
Premium Processing Is Not Available
There is no paid fast lane for combo cards. Premium processing for Form I-765 is limited to F-1 student categories tied to Optional Practical Training. Adjustment-based (c)(9) filings are not eligible.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How Do I Request Premium Processing
Expedite Requests
USCIS accepts expedite requests on any pending case, but approval is discretionary and the criteria are narrow. The grounds that may qualify:
- Severe financial loss to you or your employer, where the delay was not caused by late filing on your part.
- Humanitarian emergencies, such as a medical crisis or a death in the family abroad.
- Nonprofit interests that further U.S. cultural or social interests, submitted by an IRS-designated nonprofit.
- Government interests involving public safety, national security, or other urgent needs.
- A clear USCIS error that caused the delay.
Needing a work permit is not, on its own, enough.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Expedite Requests You’ll need documentation of concrete, urgent harm: bank statements, a doctor’s letter, a job offer with a fixed start date.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. CIS Ombudsman
The CIS Ombudsman at the Department of Homeland Security can sometimes intervene when USCIS itself has stopped responding. Before asking, you must have submitted a case inquiry to USCIS within the last 90 days and given the agency at least 60 days to respond, and your case must exceed the published processing time for your form type. If no processing time is published for your form, the Ombudsman generally will not step in until at least six months have passed since filing.10Homeland Security. Do Not Travel Before the Card Arrives
This is the most expensive mistake applicants make while waiting. If you leave the United States while your I-485 is pending and you do not have an approved advance parole document in hand, USCIS treats the departure as abandonment of your green card application. There is no grace period and no automatic appeal — the application ends.11GovInfo. 8 CFR 245.2
Three points that trip people up:
- Filing the I-131 is not enough. You have to wait for approval and have the document in your possession before leaving.
- An expired document offers no protection. If your advance parole expires while you are abroad, USCIS cannot renew or reissue it from overseas, and your I-485 is at immediate risk.
- H-1B, L-1, H-4, and L-2 workers have an exception. You can travel and return without advance parole if you remain eligible for that status, are returning to the same employer, and hold a valid visa stamp where one is required.11GovInfo. 8 CFR 245.2
One piece of good news on the money side: the $1,000 immigration parole fee that took effect in October 2025 does not apply to adjustment applicants returning on advance parole. The authorizing legislation carves out lawful I-485 applicants returning from temporary travel abroad.12Federal Register. Immigration Parole Fee Required by HR-1 Reconciliation Bill
When the EAD Arrives Without the Advance Parole
Filing both forms together does not guarantee a single combined card. USCIS sometimes finishes the I-765 before the I-131, in which case you get a standalone work permit first and the travel document arrives separately, sometimes weeks or months later.13U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS to Issue Employment Authorization and Advance Parole Card for Adjustment of Status Applicants – Questions and Answers
A standalone EAD authorizes work, not travel. Leaving on just a work permit, without a separate approved advance parole document, still counts as abandoning your green card application under the same rule above. Check the card before you make any travel plan: a true combo card carries an advance parole notation, and a standalone EAD does not.
