Coast Guard contract length depends on how you come in: enlisted active duty recruits sign for two, three, or four years, direct-entry reservists sign for six, and officers commit to anywhere from three to eight years depending on their commissioning path. One rule sits on top of all of them. Every person who joins any U.S. military branch, the Coast Guard included, incurs a total eight-year military service obligation, and whatever portion isn’t served on active duty has to be finished in a Reserve component.1Defense.gov. Enlisted Active Duty Contracts
New enlisted recruits sign one of three active duty contracts: two years, three years, or four years. For most of the service’s history the standard deal was four years active followed by four years in the Ready Reserve, and four years is still the length that most incentive programs are built around. The two-year option was introduced as a pilot in fiscal year 2021 to attract candidates who wanted to serve but hesitated at a longer commitment.2MyCG. New Coast Guard Offers Two-Year Enlistments
Which length you actually sign depends less on preference than on what you’re agreeing to in exchange. Recruits who accept a guaranteed Class A school seat, the technical training that qualifies you for a specific job rating, must commit to four years of active duty. The same four-year floor generally applies to recruits who agree to ship quickly to boot camp or who bring qualifying college credits. Recruits without a guaranteed school slot, and prior-service members, may sign shorter contracts.3GovDelivery (USCG). Coast Guard Enlistment Bonus Programs
The Coast Guard does not offer a six-year initial enlistment. Six-year terms exist only as reenlistments or extensions for members already serving.4DCMS USCG. ALCOAST 403-22 Workforce Planning Enlisted Interventions
How the Eight-Year Obligation Gets Filled
The eight-year total is statutory, not contractual, so the shorter your active duty portion, the longer your Reserve portion. A four-year active duty enlistee typically spends the remaining four years in the Ready Reserve, either the Selected Reserve or the Individual Ready Reserve. A two-year active duty enlistee typically breaks down as two years active, four years in the Selected Reserve, and two years in the Individual Ready Reserve.5GovDelivery (USCG). Coast Guard Two-Year Enlistment Pilot Program
Time in the Individual Ready Reserve is not the same as drilling. IRR members are treated as mobilization assets and can be recalled to active duty, but there is no regular training schedule. You are expected to answer official correspondence, complete an annual screening questionnaire, and maintain certain uniform items.6DCMS USCG. IRR and Standby Reserve Member Guide
Direct Reserve Enlistment
If you enlist straight into the Coast Guard Selected Reserve instead of going active duty, the math shifts. Under the Enlisted Accession Program, reserve recruits sign a six-year Selected Reserve contract that includes the initial active duty for training period. The remaining two years of the eight-year total are served in the Individual Ready Reserve.7GI Rights Hotline. Coast Guard Reserve Obligations
Officer Commitments
Officer service obligations vary more than enlisted terms because there are more ways to earn a commission.
Coast Guard Academy
Academy graduates commission as ensigns and owe at least five years of active duty. Because the eight-year total still applies, they accept a Reserve commission after active duty to cover the remaining three years.8U.S. Coast Guard Academy. About the Coast Guard Academy9DCMS USCG. Direct Commission Officer Programs
The Coast Guard commissions professionals directly through a set of programs with different active duty commitments:10GoCoastGuard.com. Direct Commission Officer Programs
- Three years for the Cyber Officer, Engineering, Environmental Management, Maritime Graduate, Licensed Officer of the Merchant Marine, Physician Assistant, and Selected School / Prior Trained Military Officer programs.
- Four years for the Intelligence Officer, Lawyer (for licensed attorneys), Health Services Officer, Selected Reserve Direct Commission, and Physician Assistant-Selected Reserve programs.
- Five years for the Direct Commission Aviator program.
- Two years initially for law students commissioning as lawyers, extending to four years once they are admitted to the bar.
The eight-year total obligation still applies to Direct Commission Officers. Reserve DCOs may be offered Extended Active Duty agreements running from one to five years, with the option of consecutive follow-on contracts.11MyCG. Coast Guard Launches Critically Trained Officers Program
College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative
CSPI participants are college sophomores and juniors at designated Minority Serving Institutions. They enlist at E-3 on a four-year contract and receive up to $20,000 per year for tuition, books, and fees along with active duty pay and healthcare. Once they finish college and the 17-week Officer Candidate School, the enlisted contract ends and a three-year active duty officer obligation begins.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 14 USC 2131 – College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative13Florida A&M University. Flight Training Adds Time
Officers who go through flight training pick up an extra service commitment on top of their commissioning obligation. Federal law sets it at eight years from completion of training for fixed-wing jet pilots and six years for helicopter and other non-jet training. This applies to Academy graduates and other commissioned officers who complete flight school.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 10 USC 653 – Minimum Service Requirement for Flight Crew Members
Reenlistment and Extensions
When your initial contract runs out, you can reenlist into a new contract or extend the one you have. Federal law caps extensions at six years total beyond the original expiration date. If a required service obligation would push you past that six-year extension ceiling, the service can discharge you and immediately reenlist you for the full obligated period.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 14 USC 2312 – Extension of Enlistments4DCMS USCG. The distinction matters for money. Selective Reenlistment Bonuses have historically required a formal reenlistment, not an extension, and some ratings have required six-year reenlistments to hit the higher bonus tiers. For fiscal year 2026 the Coast Guard has discontinued SRBs entirely and shifted retention money into Critical Skills Retention Bonuses and Designated Career Field Bonuses.16MyCG. Getting Out Before Your Contract Ends
Early separation is possible but not automatic. The Coast Guard’s separation instruction sets out several enlisted pathways, including hardship or dependency discharges, separation for the convenience of the government, early release to pursue education, separation in lieu of orders, and a Second Chance Program. Officers who want to leave early submit a resignation request, ideally at least six months before the desired date. Resignations are generally denied if the officer has not completed the active duty obligation attached to their commissioning program or has not met time-on-station requirements.17Defense.gov.
