The Biggest Settlements Accepting Claims

The Federal Trade Commission’s $2.5 billion settlement with Amazon, announced in September 2025, is the largest consumer case currently open. It sets aside $1.5 billion for refunds to an estimated 35 million people who were enrolled in Prime without clear consent or blocked when they tried to cancel. The settlement uses a point system: device purchasers can earn up to four points per eligible device (roughly $18 to $56), while privacy-only class members receive about $2 to $10. How to File a Claim

If you’re a class member, you’ll usually receive a notice by mail or email with a case name, a claim ID, and a link to the official settlement website. From there you review the eligibility criteria and submit a claim form online, or mail a paper form if the settlement accepts one. Each case has its own deadline, and missing it forfeits your right to payment.18ClassAction.org. How to Join a Class Action

Most class actions are opt-out, meaning you’re automatically included unless you formally exclude yourself. You would only opt out if you want to keep the right to sue the company on your own. The smaller number of opt-in cases (mostly wage and hour disputes) require you to affirmatively sign up, and the notice will say so. Filing is always free. Anyone asking you to pay a fee to process your claim is running a scam.18ClassAction.org. How to Join a Class Action

Never received a notice but think you qualify? Search the case name directly, find the official settlement site, and check whether the site allows claim submissions without a notice ID. Several open cases, including Tinder and the beef antitrust settlement, do.

What You Can Realistically Expect to Receive

Payouts vary widely. A 2015 CFPB study found the average award in consumer class actions was $32 per class member. Some settlements pay less: Apple’s Siri data settlement paid some claimants under $1, and Mastercard’s UK settlement averaged about $2.27. Cases involving documented individual harm can pay far more. The Volkswagen emissions settlement paid eligible owners between $5,100 and $10,000, and the Juul settlement paid up to $9,000.13The Hill. Are You Owed Money? Check These 11 Settlements

The number that matters most is the fund size divided by the claim rate. Only about 4% of people who receive settlement notices actually file, which is why payments often come in higher than the initial per-person estimates.19AARP. Class Action Settlement Notice

How to Spot a Settlement Scam

Scammers impersonate claims administrators and law firms through phishing emails and fake mailers. The red flags are consistent. Any request for your Social Security number, bank account details, or an upfront processing fee is fraudulent. Legitimate settlements never charge to file a claim.

To verify a notice, search the case name independently rather than clicking links inside the message. Confirm the settlement website and case number, and cross-check against aggregator sites like ClassAction.org or TopClassActions.com. If you’ve been targeted, report it to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.19AARP. Class Action Settlement Notice20Washington State Attorney General. Once your claim is filed, check its status through the settlement administrator listed on the official case website, not through any third-party service.
