If your citizenship interview was cancelled by USCIS, your application is still active and you do not need to refile or pay another fee. The agency will send you a new Form I-797C in the mail with a rescheduled date, time, and location. How long that takes depends on your field office — some reschedule within three to four weeks, others take several months.
What a USCIS-Initiated Cancellation Actually Means
A cancellation notice that cites “unforeseen circumstances” is an operational problem on the agency’s end: a closed building, a facility issue, a staffing shortage, a case file that didn’t arrive from another service center, or a background check that hasn’t cleared. Under 8 CFR 335.2, USCIS will only schedule an initial examination after receiving the completed FBI criminal background check, and delays there can pull an appointment off the calendar.1eCFR. 8 CFR 335.2 – Examination of Applicant
None of this counts against you. The “failure to appear” rule under 8 CFR 335.6, which lets USCIS treat an application as abandoned when an applicant misses an interview, does not apply when the agency itself pulled the appointment.2eCFR. 8 CFR 335.6 – Failure to Appear for Examination You were told not to come.
What to Do in the First Few Days
Confirm USCIS has your current mailing address. Your new interview notice comes by physical mail, and a wrong address means a missed appointment. If you’ve moved since filing, update your address through your USCIS online account or by filing Form AR-11. USCIS encourages the online method because it triggers an automated update; a paper AR-11 does not.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Change Your Address
Log into your USCIS online account and check the status. You’ll likely see a message reflecting the cancellation. Keep two identifiers handy for any follow-up: your 13-character receipt number, which begins with three letters such as IOE, MSC, or NBC followed by ten digits and appears on your Form I-797C,4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Receipt Number and your nine-digit A-Number, found on the I-797C and your green card.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Number
Save the cancellation notice. If you eventually need to escalate through the Ombudsman or a federal court, documentation of when the cancellation happened and how long you’ve waited becomes evidence.
How and When USCIS Reschedules
Rescheduling is automatic. Your file goes back into the local field office’s queue with no action required from you, and a new Form I-797C will arrive by mail with a revised date, time, and location. That new notice fully replaces the old one.
There is no published regulation guaranteeing a specific timeframe. Well-run offices with lighter caseloads sometimes reschedule within three to four weeks. High-volume metro offices can take several months. The online case status is worth checking, but the physical mail notice is the definitive scheduling document.
Protecting Your Eligibility During the Wait
Continuous Residence
Naturalization requires continuous residence in the United States for five years before filing, or three if you’re applying based on marriage to a U.S. citizen, and that requirement continues through the date you’re admitted to citizenship.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1427 – Requirements of Naturalization A delay between cancellation and rescheduling doesn’t threaten eligibility by itself, but extended travel abroad during that gap can.
A single trip outside the U.S. lasting more than six months but less than one year creates a legal presumption that you broke continuous residence. You can rebut that presumption with evidence — keeping U.S. employment, maintaining a home here, immediate family who stayed — but the burden is on you.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual Volume 12 Part D Chapter 3 – Continuous Residence A trip of one year or more almost always breaks continuous residence entirely, restarting the clock.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1427 – Requirements of Naturalization During a rescheduling delay, keep any international trips well under six months.
Green Card Validity
If your green card expires while you wait, the N-400 receipt notice itself extends the card’s validity for up to 24 months from the date the receipt was issued. This applies to applicants who filed the N-400 on or after December 12, 2022. The receipt notice combined with the expired card serves as evidence of your continued status, identity, and employment authorization.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Updates Policy to Automatically Extend Green Cards for Naturalization Applicants Keep both together; the expired card alone won’t work, and neither will the receipt alone.
If You Need to Move Before the New Date Arrives
Your application can follow you. Under federal law, an applicant who moves out of the district where the application is pending can request a transfer to the new district, and the case continues as if it had originally been filed there.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1446 – Investigation of Applicants; Examination of Applications File an AR-11 change of address, and your case should transfer to the field office with jurisdiction over your new home.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Change Your Address
A transfer can add time to an already delayed case, since the file has to physically move and get slotted into a new queue. If you have flexibility, waiting for the rescheduled interview before relocating is often the faster path.
Following Up When Nothing Arrives
If about 90 days pass with no new interview notice, start making inquiries.
USCIS Contact Center
The Contact Center is 1-800-375-5283.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual Volume 1 Part A Chapter 3 – Types of Assistance Reaching a live agent takes some persistence with the automated menu. If the first representative can’t see anything about your local office’s schedule, ask for a callback from a Tier 2 officer, who has deeper system access.
Online Case Inquiry
You can submit an inquiry through the USCIS e-Request system when your case appears to be outside normal processing times.11U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Check Case Processing The form asks for your receipt number and the date of your last agency communication. An electronic inquiry prompts the field office to review the file and determine why rescheduling hasn’t happened.
CIS Ombudsman
If your own inquiries go nowhere, the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman at the Department of Homeland Security can intervene. For a processing delay, the Ombudsman can step in when a case inquiry was submitted to USCIS within the last 90 days and at least 60 days have passed without resolution. Naturalization applications are among the case types eligible for Ombudsman help.12Homeland Security. How to Submit a Case Assistance Request
Federal Court
Federal law lets you petition a U.S. district court if USCIS fails to decide your naturalization application within 120 days after your examination.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1447 – Hearings on Denials of Applications for Naturalization Important boundary: the 120-day clock starts after the examination actually takes place. If your interview was cancelled before it happened, this clock hasn’t started, and this remedy isn’t available yet.
If You’re the One Who Needs to Cancel
Different rules apply if the cancellation is on your side. Under 8 CFR 335.6, failing to appear without notifying USCIS in writing within 30 days can result in your application being treated as abandoned, and the agency can administratively close it without a decision on the merits.2eCFR. 8 CFR 335.6 – Failure to Appear for Examination If that happens, you have one year to request reopening without paying a new fee; after one year, the application is dismissed and you’d start over with a new N-400. Notify the field office in writing before the appointment when you can, and USCIS advises canceling and rescheduling rather than showing up sick.14U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. If You Feel Sick, Do Not Come to Your USCIS Appointment; Please Cancel and Reschedule It
What to Bring to the Rescheduled Interview
A rescheduled interview is identical in substance to the original: the same civics and English tests, the same review of your N-400, the same background questions. But if months have passed, your document package may need updating.
USCIS instructs applicants to bring certified tax returns covering the last five years, or three years if you’re applying based on marriage to a U.S. citizen.15U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Thinking About Applying for Naturalization If the rescheduled date falls in a new tax year, file your most recent return and bring it. Also plan to bring:
- Your original Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), even if expired.
- A valid photo ID: state driver’s license, state ID card, or passport.
- The new Form I-797C interview notice.
- Your passport with any entry and exit stamps if you traveled abroad since filing.
- Documentation of anything that changed since you filed the N-400: new arrests, address changes, marital status changes, or new children.
The officer can ask for additional documents, so bring more rather than less. If your situation has changed — a new job, a move, a traffic citation — volunteer it. The officer will update your application at the interview, and undisclosed changes look far worse than disclosed ones.
