A China visa application for U.S. citizens runs through the Chinese embassy in Washington or one of four consulates, using the online COVA form plus a printed package of supporting documents delivered to the mission that covers your state. Fees are temporarily reduced through December 31, 2026, starting at $30 for a single-entry visa.1Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles. Check Whether You Actually Need a Visa
A few trips don’t require one. U.S. citizens can enter Hainan island without a visa for up to 30 days for tourism, short-term business, medical treatment, exhibitions, and sports competitions, arriving on a direct international flight or routing through Hong Kong or Macau. Work and study are not allowed under this arrangement.2U.S. Department of State. China Travel Advisory
China also runs a 240-hour visa-free transit policy at 60 ports of entry across 24 provinces if you hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region.3Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United States of America. China Extends 240-hour Visa-Free Transit Policy Coverage
Hong Kong and Macau are separate entry jurisdictions. A visit of up to 90 days in Hong Kong needs no visa, but a Hong Kong entry does not admit you to the mainland, and a Chinese visa does not admit you to Hong Kong or Macau.4U.S. Department of State. Hong Kong International Travel Information
Pick the Right Visa Category
China assigns visas by the reason for travel, and applying under the wrong one can get you rejected or, once you’re in the country, fined or deported. The categories most U.S. travelers use:
- L visa for tourism, sightseeing, and personal visits.
- M visa for commercial activity, trade meetings, and business negotiations. It does not authorize a salaried job.
- Q1 for family visits over 180 days to relatives who are Chinese citizens or permanent residents; Q2 for shorter family visits.
- Z visa for employment. Your employer must first obtain a Notification Letter of Foreigner’s Work Permit before you can apply, and once you’re in China you must convert to a residence permit within 30 days.5Beijing Municipal Government. Notification Letter of Foreigner’s Work Permit
- X1 for study programs longer than 180 days (also requiring conversion to a residence permit); X2 for shorter study.
Most U.S. citizens can request a 10-year multiple-entry tourist or business visa, a benefit that comes from a reciprocal arrangement announced in November 2014.6The White House. Fact Sheet: Supporting American Job Growth and Strengthening Ties by Extending U.S./China Visa Validity Each individual stay is limited by the duration the border officer stamps in your passport, and the visa cannot outlast your passport: if the book expires in three years, so does the visa in practice.
Gather Your Documents
Your passport needs at least six months of remaining validity from your planned entry date and at least two completely blank visa pages, not endorsement or amendment pages.7Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United States of America. Requirements and Procedures for Chinese Visa Application
You need a color photo taken within the last six months on a plain white background, sized 48mm tall by 33mm wide with specific head-size rules.8Chinese Visa Application Service Center. Photo Requirements – FAQ A standard U.S. passport photo is a different size and will be rejected. Ask for a “Chinese visa photo” and check the dimensions before you leave the shop.
Invitation Letters or Itinerary
For a family visit on a Q1 or Q2 visa, the invitation must list the inviting person’s name, gender, date of birth, Chinese ID number, address, phone number, relationship to you, your planned dates, and length of stay. For business or trade travel on an M visa, the invitation must come from a Chinese company or organization and include the reason for the visit, dates, locations, who covers expenses, and the company’s official seal and legal representative’s signature.7Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United States of America. Requirements and Procedures for Chinese Visa Application Tourists without a personal invitation can submit a round-trip flight itinerary and confirmed hotel reservations instead.
Financial Documents
Consulates may ask self-funded travelers for six months of personal bank statements. If your employer is paying, submit an employer letter confirming coverage plus six months of the company’s bank statements. If a relative in China is paying for a family visit, submit that relative’s bank statements and proof of the relationship. There is no published minimum balance, but the statements need to show the trip is affordable.
Fill Out the COVA Form
Every applicant starts at the China Online Visa Application (COVA) portal run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.9Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China. China Online Visa Application Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour on it. The form pulls detail Americans don’t usually see on travel applications: a full five-year employment history with company names spelled out, job titles, and addresses, plus information on parents, spouses, and children.10Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in New York. Guidelines for China Online Visa Application
Every entry must match your passport exactly. A transposed digit or wrong date of birth is enough for a denial. COVA generates a unique application ID when you finish; save it, because you’ll need it to track or amend your application. Corrections are allowed before you print, but once the form is printed and signed, changes mean starting over. Print the application and confirmation page, sign both in black or blue ink, and bring them to submission with your passport and supporting documents. Consular staff scan the barcodes on the confirmation page, so print quality matters.
Submit to the Right Consulate
You must submit to the mission covering your state. Sending your package to the wrong one gets it returned unprocessed. After the closure of the Houston consulate, there are five jurisdictions:11Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles. - Chinese Embassy (Washington, D.C.): D.C., Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Delaware, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, and Puerto Rico.
- New York: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Rhode Island.
- Chicago: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
- San Francisco: Northern California, Alaska, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.
- Los Angeles: Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa.
Most consulates require an appointment through the Appointment for Visa Application Submission (AVAS) system.12Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China. Appointment for Visa Application Submission Not all locations use it; if yours doesn’t, you can walk in. Authorized third-party agents can submit and pick up on your behalf for roughly $240 to $640 on top of the government fee, which is useful if you live far from the nearest consulate but is not required.

- Multiple entries, 6 months: $60
- Multiple entries, 12 months or more: $90
- Express service surcharge: $25 per visa
Payment is by credit card (Visa or Mastercard), money order, or cashier’s check; cash is not accepted.13Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United States of America. Chinese Visa Application Frequently Asked Questions Fees are non-refundable whether the visa is approved or denied. The reduction expires at the end of 2026, and no successor rate has been announced.
Processing Times
The New York consulate publishes three tiers, and other posts follow roughly the same schedule:14Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in New York. Fees, Processing Time and Payments
- Regular: 4 business days
- Express: 2–3 business days
- Rush: 1 business day, only in extreme emergencies and only if a consular officer approves
Some applications get flagged for further review, and the consulate won’t confirm a pickup date until they contact you. You’ll get a pickup slip at submission; it’s the only way to retrieve your passport. An approved visa is a full-page sticker inside the passport showing validity and number of entries allowed.
Fingerprinting
Fingerprint collection is normally required, but a temporary waiver runs through December 31, 2026 for short-term applicants. If you’re applying for a single or double-entry visa with a stay of 180 days or less, you don’t have to appear in person for biometrics. Long-term work (Z) and residence (D) visas still require fingerprints. Applicants under 14 or over 70 are permanently exempt, as is anyone whose prints were already collected within the past five years using the same passport.15Chinese Visa Application Service Center. Situations That Trip People Up
U.S.-Born Children of Chinese Parents
A child born in the United States to at least one Chinese parent does not automatically qualify for a regular Chinese visa. A visa is possible only in specific circumstances, such as both parents holding foreign passports at the time of birth, or one parent holding a Chinese passport along with U.S. permanent residency. Otherwise the child is treated as a Chinese national under Chinese law and must apply for a Chinese travel document rather than a visa. Expect to submit the child’s unabridged birth certificate, both parents’ passports, and proof of U.S. immigration status.
Tibet
A regular Chinese visa does not admit you to the Tibet Autonomous Region. You need a separate Tibet Travel Permit from the Tibet Tourism Bureau, and independent travel is not allowed: you must book through a local agency in Tibet, which arranges the required guide and files for the permit. Processing runs 18 to 30 days depending on where you plan to go, and areas outside Lhasa need additional permits.
Denials
If your application is denied, the fee is not refunded and the consulate is not required to explain the reason. You can send a formal appeal letter to the processing consulate, but there is no formal appeals process and no guaranteed reconsideration. Reapplying is usually the better path, but fix the likely cause first, because repeated rejections make later approvals harder.
What Overstays and Misuse Cost
Under the Exit and Entry Administration Law, foreigners who reside illegally face a warning for minor violations. More serious overstays draw a fine of 500 RMB per day (roughly $70), capped at 10,000 RMB (about $1,400), with possible detention of 5 to 15 days. Unauthorized work carries a separate penalty of 5,000 to 20,000 RMB plus possible detention.16Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China. Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People’s Republic of China Serious violations can trigger deportation and a 10-year re-entry ban.17Office of International Relations, Peking University. Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People’s Republic of China
A valid visa is not a guarantee of entry. The State Department warns that Chinese authorities have broad discretion to detain foreign nationals, including for electronic messages critical of the government, certain research activities, or a positive drug test on arrival, and that exit bans can prevent departure without warning. China does not recognize dual nationality, and U.S. citizens of Chinese descent may face additional scrutiny.2U.S. Department of State. China Travel Advisory
