The Chile visa processing time depends on which permit you need and where you file. A short-stay consular authorization typically clears in about 20 working days, while a Residencia Temporal (temporary residence) application commonly takes six to twelve months from submission to a final decision. Student visas run at least 16 weeks. The single factor you can actually control is the paperwork: incomplete or improperly legalized documents restart the clock and account for most of the delays applicants experience.
How Long Each Permit Type Takes
Chile groups its immigration permits into two categories, and the processing time gap between them is wide.
Short-Stay Permits (Permanencia Transitoria)
Most travelers do not apply for a Chilean visa at all for stays under 90 days. They enter under the Permanencia Transitoria, which covers tourism, business meetings, medical visits, and family purposes, and it can be extended once for another 90 days.1Servicio Nacional de Migraciones. Permanencia Transitoria Permit
Nationals of certain countries do need prior consular authorization before entering. The list is maintained by Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and changes based on reciprocity agreements.2Servicio Nacional de Migraciones. People Entering for Tourist, Sporting, Business or Other Similar Purposes Where that authorization is required, the consular review itself takes roughly 20 working days,3Chile en el Exterior. Temporary Resident Visa (Maximum Length of One Year) though you should factor in the time to gather documents and, for some nationalities and subcategories, an in-person interview at the consulate.
Temporary Residence (Residencia Temporal)
The Residencia Temporal is the main permit for anyone planning to live, work, study, invest, or reunite with family in Chile beyond a tourist stay. It is valid for up to two years and can be renewed for two additional years in most of the 15 subcategories.4Servicio Nacional de Migraciones. Total processing commonly runs six to twelve months from submission to a final decision. The 20-working-day figure Chile publishes for consular review covers only the initial step, not the full cycle at the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones (SERMIG). Visas tied to free trade agreements or significant investment can move faster than the general timeline; family reunification and standard work-based applications tend to sit at the longer end.
Student Visas
Student applications typically take at least 16 weeks. Apply months before your program begins, and be prepared for the possibility that you will need to arrive in Chile before the visa is fully issued.
What Actually Slows an Application Down
Three things push timelines past the published estimates.
- Incomplete or improperly legalized documents. A single missing item or a certificate that was not correctly apostilled will reset the review. This is the most common cause of long waits.
- Additional background checks. Certain nationalities or personal circumstances trigger deeper screening that runs in parallel with the main review.
- Application volume at SERMIG. Processing slows during peak periods, particularly at the start of the academic year and during major hiring cycles.
Where You Apply Changes the Path
The route your file takes, and the platform you use, depend on whether you file from outside Chile or from within the country.
From Abroad
Short-stay applications for nationalities that require prior authorization go through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ online platform, Trámites Consulares Online.6Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores. Trámites Consulares Online For stays longer than 90 days, that platform directs you to SERMIG. Some consulates require an in-person interview depending on the subcategory and your nationality, which adds scheduling time on top of the review itself.
From Within Chile
If you entered on a Permanencia Transitoria and want to move to temporary residence, you apply directly through SERMIG’s Portal de Trámites Digitales. You complete the form online, upload PDFs, and receive a case number to track progress. There is no consular step, but SERMIG’s backlog still governs the overall wait.
The Documents That Tend to Cause Delays
Requirements vary by subcategory, but the core Residencia Temporal file is consistent, and a handful of items are what most often send an application back.
- Passport. At least one year of remaining validity from the application date when applying from abroad.4Servicio Nacional de Migraciones. Residencia Temporal Permit
- Criminal background check. Required for applicants 18 and older, covering your country of origin and any country you have lived in during the last five years. The certificate must be apostilled or legalized.4Servicio Nacional de Migraciones. Residencia Temporal Permit
- Medical certificate. Signed by a general practitioner, issued within the last 60 days, and officially legalized.3Chile en el Exterior. Temporary Resident Visa (Maximum Length of One Year)
- Proof of financial solvency. Bank statements or an employment contract showing you can support yourself. What is acceptable depends on whether you are employed, self-employed, or being sponsored.
- Application form and passport-sized photograph.
Translation and Legalization Add Weeks
Documents in languages other than Spanish or English need a certified translation from a recognized body.4Servicio Nacional de Migraciones. Residencia Temporal Permit English documents do not need translation. All documents issued abroad must be apostilled if the issuing country is party to the Hague Apostille Convention, or legalized through the Chilean consulate and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs otherwise. Apostille processing in your home country can itself take several weeks and often catches applicants off guard. Start that step first.
For dependent applications (spouses, civil partners, minor children of a primary Residencia Temporal holder), the file is heavier. A spouse or partner must provide a marriage certificate or proof of cohabitation, plus a notarized affidavit committing to cover the dependent’s living expenses, and the household must meet income thresholds set by Chile’s Ministry of Social Development and Family. All foreign relationship documents must be apostilled or legalized.7Servicio Nacional de Migraciones. Dependent Status More documents means more places the file can stall.
After Approval: The Deadlines Most Applicants Miss
Chile no longer places a physical visa sticker in your passport for Residencia Temporal permits. Approved applicants download an Electronic Visa Stamp (Estampado Electrónico) to present at the border.
The post-approval clock is strict. Once you are notified that a Residencia Temporal was granted from abroad, you have 120 working days to download the Estampado Electrónico. After downloading it, you have 90 calendar days to enter Chile.8Servicio Nacional de Migraciones. Estampado Electrónico Miss either window and the permit expires unused, and you start over. For applications submitted from within Chile, the Estampado Electrónico arrives automatically by email once the fee is paid, or once the application is approved for fee-exempt permits.
If Your Application Is Denied
A refusal notice will list SERMIG’s specific reasons. You can file an administrative appeal, called a recurso de reposición, which under Chile’s Administrative Procedures Law (Law 19,880) must be submitted within five business days of receiving the refusal.9Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional. Ley 19880 – Establece Bases de los Procedimientos Administrativos que Rigen los Actos de los Organos de la Administracion del Estado That window is short. Open the notification the day it arrives.
An effective appeal introduces new evidence or arguments aimed directly at the stated reasons for denial. Resubmitting the same file will not work. If a background check expired during review, attach a new one. If financial solvency was the issue, updated bank statements or an employment contract belong in the appeal. A generic letter of disagreement will be dismissed, and you will have used your appeal without changing the outcome.
