US citizens do not need a visa to enter Chile for tourism or business stays of 90 days or fewer. A valid US passport is all you need at the border, and Chile no longer charges the $160 reciprocity fee it once collected from American travelers on arrival. A Chile visa for US citizens is required only when the purpose is different (work, study, long-term residence) or the stay will run past 90 days, and in those cases the application goes through a Chilean consulate in the United States before you fly.
Tourist Entry Rules
On arrival, officers from the Policía de Investigaciones de Chile (PDI) stamp your passport and issue a Tourist Card valid for up to 90 days.1U.S. Embassy in Chile. Entry and Exit Requirements Chile does not impose the common six-month passport validity rule; your passport only needs to remain valid for the duration of your planned stay.2U.S. Department of State. Chile International Travel Information
Immigration officers expect you to show you can support yourself. The threshold Chile sets is $46 USD per day of your planned stay, provable through bank statements, credit card limits, or cash.2U.S. Department of State. Chile International Travel Information Officers may also ask for a return or onward ticket, especially if you have no fixed departure date.
One boundary worth flagging: the visa exemption applies only to regular tourist passports. If you hold a US diplomatic or official passport, you must obtain a Chilean visa before travel.2U.S. Department of State. Chile International Travel Information
The Tourist Card and Why It Matters
The Tarjeta de Turismo (Tourist Card) is the official record of your legal entry and authorized stay.3Servicio Nacional de Migraciones – Gobierno de Chile. Personas que ingresan con fines turísticos, deportivos o similares It may come as a small paper slip or an electronic record. Treat it like a second passport.
You have to present it when you leave, and officers check it against your passport. Lose it and you must request a duplicate through the PDI’s online portal before you can exit the country.3Servicio Nacional de Migraciones – Gobierno de Chile. Personas que ingresan con fines turísticos, deportivos o similares Sorting that out at the airport before a flight is the kind of headache that ruins a trip, so keep the card with your passport at all times.
The card also carries a financial benefit. Chilean law exempts foreign tourists from the 19% Value Added Tax on hotel stays, provided the hotel can verify your foreign tourist status. In practice, that means showing your Tourist Card and passport at check-in. Not every hotel applies the exemption automatically, so ask when you book and again when you arrive.
Extending Your Stay Past 90 Days
If 90 days is not enough, you can apply for a single extension, the Prórroga de Permanencia Transitoria, which adds another 90 days for a total of 180 days in tourist status.1U.S. Embassy in Chile. Entry and Exit Requirements The fee is $100 USD. Children and adolescents are exempt from the fee.4Servicio Nacional de Migraciones. Prórroga de Permanencia Transitoria Requirements
You apply through the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones (SERMIG) with your passport, Tourist Card, and proof of financial means such as verifiable bank statements or a bank certificate.4Servicio Nacional de Migraciones. Prórroga de Permanencia Transitoria Requirements File before your initial 90-day period expires. If your Tourist Card has already lapsed, you are overstaying, not extending, and the consequences change.
The extension keeps you in tourist status only. It does not authorize you to work for a Chilean employer, enroll in a degree program, or earn income from Chilean sources. For any of those, you need a temporary residence visa arranged in advance.
Overstay Penalties
Chile takes overstays seriously and structures fines on a sliding scale in Unidades Tributarias Mensuales (UTM), a tax unit that adjusts monthly. In early 2026, one UTM equals roughly 69,800 Chilean pesos. The figures below reflect the 50% discount available to travelers who self-declare the infraction through SERMIG’s online portal.5Servicio Nacional de Migraciones – Gobierno de Chile. Sanctions and Fines
For overstays of 180 calendar days or fewer, classified as a less serious infraction:
- 1 to 90 days late: 0.25 UTM for a first offense, 1 UTM for repeat offenders
- 91 to 120 days late: 0.5 UTM first offense, 2 UTM repeat
- 121 to 180 days late: 1.5 UTM first offense, 2.5 UTM repeat
Overstays beyond 180 calendar days are a serious infraction, with fines from 2.5 UTM to 6 UTM depending on duration and prior violations.5Servicio Nacional de Migraciones – Gobierno de Chile. Sanctions and Fines Leaving Chile without passing through exit immigration after your permit has expired adds a further penalty of 10 to 50 UTM if you attempt to re-enter within two years.
Traveling with Minors
Chile enforces strict rules for children crossing its borders. Any minor entering the country must carry an original apostilled birth certificate, and parents should be prepared to show evidence of their relationship to the child.2U.S. Department of State. Chile International Travel Information
Departure requirements are stricter. If a child is leaving Chile with only one parent, the non-traveling parent must provide a notarized authorization letter. That letter, together with the child’s apostilled birth certificate and passport, is presented to Chilean International Police at the airport.6U.S. Embassy in Chile. Chilean Exit Requirements for Minors Under Age 18 If the authorization is notarized in the United States, it also has to be apostilled to be valid in Chile.2U.S. Department of State. Chile International Travel Information
For minors in tourist status, the child must leave Chile with the same adult they entered with. If that is not possible, both parents must sign a notarized consent letter, and the child needs the birth certificate on hand. Dual US-Chilean nationals under 18 must have a valid Chilean passport in addition to their US passport.6U.S. Embassy in Chile. Chilean Exit Requirements for Minors Under Age 18 Start the apostille process well before the trip; the State Department warns it can be lengthy.2U.S. Department of State. Customs, Agriculture, and Pets
Chile has some of the strictest agricultural import controls in South America, enforced by its Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG). Fresh fruits and vegetables are completely prohibited and cannot enter the country under any circumstances. Dispose of them before customs or declare them and hand them over. Failing to declare restricted items can result in large fines.7Aduana (Chilean Customs). Equipaje Inglés Many processed foods (canned meats, dairy, dried fruits, cold cuts) are allowed but must be declared on arrival. When in doubt, declare it.
Prescription medications are permitted in personal-use quantities with the relevant prescription. Over-the-counter medications should also be limited to personal-use amounts.7Aduana (Chilean Customs). Equipaje Inglés For a long trip with a large supply, carry documentation from your doctor.
Dogs and cats need a Zoosanitary Import Certificate from the competent US authority (typically USDA APHIS). The certificate must confirm a clinical veterinary exam within 10 days of arrival, current rabies vaccination, and internal and external deworming.8Gob.cl. Are You Traveling with Pets Outside of Chile? Find Out What Procedures You Need to Complete Schedule the exam close to departure so the 10-day window does not expire in transit.
Visas for Work, Study, or Longer Stays
If your purpose goes beyond tourism, or your stay will exceed 180 total days, you need a visa arranged before you fly. US citizens who intend to work, study, or live in Chile must apply at a Chilean consulate in the United States before departure.1U.S. Embassy in Chile. Entry and Exit Requirements You cannot convert tourist status into a work or residence permit from inside Chile.
The main option is the Temporary Residence Visa, with subcategories for employment, academic enrollment, investment, and family reunification. The initial visa is granted for up to one year.9Chile en el Exterior. Temporary Resident Visa (Maximum Length of One Year) Chile does not currently offer a dedicated digital nomad visa, so remote workers earning income from foreign employers generally enter on tourist status. Tourist status does not authorize any form of work, and staying in Chile more than 183 days in a 12-month period can trigger Chilean tax residency.10InvestChile. The Chilean Tax System
Documents Every Applicant Needs
Every temporary residence application requires a valid passport, a nationwide police background certificate (for US citizens, typically an FBI Identity History Summary) issued within the previous 60 days, and a medical report certifying good health.9Chile en el Exterior. Temporary Resident Visa (Maximum Length of One Year) Depending on the subcategory, you may also need an employment contract from a Chilean employer or an acceptance letter from a recognized educational institution.1U.S. Embassy in Chile. Entry and Exit Requirements The 60-day validity window on the police certificate is tight given FBI processing times, so order the summary early and time your application to fit.
Apostilling US Documents
Most documents originating in the United States must be apostilled before Chile will accept them.2U.S. Department of State. Chile International Travel Information An apostille is a standardized certificate that authenticates seals and signatures on an official document for use in another country. For federal documents like an FBI background check, request the apostille from the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Authentications. The document must be an original or certified copy with original seals and signatures, and it should not be separately notarized beforehand, which can invalidate it.11U.S. Department of State. Preparing a Document for an Apostille Certificate
For state-issued documents such as birth certificates, the apostille comes from the Secretary of State in the state that issued the document. Processing times vary; build several weeks of lead time into your planning. If Chile requires a Spanish translation, get the document professionally translated and have the translation notarized, but do not notarize the original document itself.11U.S. Department of State. Preparing a Document for an Apostille Certificate
Moving Toward Permanent Residency
After holding a temporary residence visa for at least 24 continuous months, you become eligible to apply for permanent residency (Residencia Definitiva). The timeline can shorten to as few as 12 months if you have family ties to Chilean citizens or permanent residents, made qualifying investments, or contributed to Chilean culture, science, or sports.12Servicio Nacional de Migraciones – Gobierno de Chile. Residencia Definitiva Permit
The wait can also extend past 24 months for insufficient income, gaps in employment during temporary residence, extended absences from Chile, or any migration or legal violations on record. File the permanent residency application no more than 90 days before your temporary permit expires. The application requires an apostilled criminal record certificate from your home country, your passport, and proof of financial stability or employment in Chile.12Servicio Nacional de Migraciones – Gobierno de Chile. Residencia Definitiva Permit
Health Insurance and Medical Costs
Chile does not require tourists to carry health insurance to enter. The State Department still recommends supplemental coverage that includes medical evacuation, because most Chilean healthcare providers accept only cash and will not bill a US insurance plan.2U.S. Department of State. Chile International Travel Information A medical evacuation from Santiago to the United States can cost tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket. Confirm your existing health plan covers overseas care before departure, and if it does not, a standalone travel medical policy is worth the cost.
