ChatGPT Charge: Identifying, Canceling, and Refunds

A ChatGPT charge on your credit card is almost always a payment to OpenAI for a ChatGPT subscription, most commonly the $20-per-month Plus plan. It can also come from Apple or Google if you subscribed through a phone app. You can stop future charges by canceling through the same channel you signed up with, and you can generally request a refund within 14 days of the charge.

How to Recognize the Charge on Your Statement

OpenAI’s charges show up under a handful of merchant descriptors depending on your bank and how you subscribed. Common labels include “OPENAI,” “OPENAI CHATGPT,” “OPENAI.COM,” “CHATGPT SUBSCRIPTION,” and “OPENAI SAN FRANCISCO.” If you subscribed through a phone app, the charge may appear as “APPLE.COM/BILL” or “GOOGLE *ChatGPT” instead of referencing OpenAI directly. That distinction matters because it determines who you contact for billing help.

The amount itself is a clue to what you’re paying for. OpenAI’s paid personal tiers as of 2026 are Plus at $20 per month, Pro at $100 per month, and a higher Pro tier at $200 per month. Business plans start at $25 per user per month billed monthly and require at least two users, so a larger charge usually points to a team workspace.1OpenAI Help Center. If you don’t remember signing up, check whether someone else in your household has access to the card, and search your email for a confirmation from OpenAI.

Why the Amount Doesn’t Match the Listed Price

A $20 Plus subscription might post as $21.50 or $21.80. The difference is sales tax. Many states tax software subscriptions, and combined state and local rates range from roughly 4% to over 10%. Some states don’t tax digital subscriptions at all, so one cardholder sees a flat $20 while another consistently sees more. A small mismatch between the advertised price and the actual charge is normal and isn’t a billing error.

How to Check Your Billing History

Before you contact anyone, pull up your records inside ChatGPT. Log in on the web, open Settings, and select Billing. How to Cancel the Subscription

Cancellation depends on where you originally signed up. Canceling on one platform will not cancel a subscription purchased through another.

If You Subscribed on the Website

If You Subscribed Through an App

If you signed up in the iPhone app, Apple is billing you and you have to cancel through your Apple ID subscription settings. If you signed up through Google Play, cancel through Google Play’s subscription management. Contacting OpenAI about an app store subscription won’t stop the charges, because OpenAI isn’t the party billing you.

How to Request a Refund

OpenAI’s refund policy runs on a 14-day window. Accidental purchases are generally eligible for a refund if you contact OpenAI within 14 days of the charge. Residents of the EU, UK, or Turkey can get a prorated refund if they cancel within that same 14-day period.6OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Request a Refund for My ChatGPT Subscription

If the charge came from an unfamiliar developer rather than OpenAI, you’re likely dealing with a copycat app and should dispute the charge through your bank or the relevant app store.

Disputing the Charge With Your Bank

If OpenAI won’t resolve the issue, or the charge is completely unauthorized, federal law gives you a path through your card issuer. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you have 60 days from the date your card issuer sends the statement containing the disputed charge to file a written dispute.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors Your notice needs to include your name, account number, the charge you believe is wrong, the amount, and why you think it’s an error.

Once the issuer receives your dispute, it must acknowledge it within 30 days and resolve the investigation within two billing cycles. During that time, the issuer cannot report the disputed amount as delinquent or send it to collections.10Federal Trade Commission. Try OpenAI first; banks generally expect you to attempt resolution with the merchant before filing a chargeback.
