“Chase tax ID number” can mean one of two things depending on why you’re looking. If you need the bank’s own number for a tax form or legal filing, JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. uses EIN 13-4994650 on its regulatory filings.1SEC. JPMorgan Chase Bank, National Association If you need the tax ID Chase has on file for your account, that’s your Social Security Number for a personal account, or your business’s Employer Identification Number if the account is held by an LLC, corporation, or trust. Getting the right number in the right place matters because a missing or mismatched TIN triggers automatic 24% backup withholding on your interest.
Chase’s EIN and Where to Confirm It
The EIN above is the one tied to JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A., and it’s what you’ll typically see on a 1099-INT for a deposit account. JPMorgan Chase operates through several legal entities, though, so the EIN on your 1099 may differ depending on whether you hold a deposit account, an investment account, or a credit card product. Use the EIN printed on the specific form you’re reporting from rather than assuming one number covers everything.
The most reliable place to confirm the number is the 1099 itself. On Form 1099-INT, the bank’s identification number appears in the upper section in the field labeled “PAYER’S TIN,” directly below the bank’s name and address.2Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-INT (Rev. January 2024) Chase typically mails 1099-INT and 1099-MISC forms by January 31 each year, and you can view them by signing in at chase.com and going to your tax documents.3Chase. Which TIN You Give Chase for Your Account
The correct TIN depends on the legal owner of the account, not whoever manages it day to day.
For a standard personal checking, savings, or investment account, your SSN is the TIN on file. Joint accounts typically use the primary account holder’s SSN, and each holder reports their share of the income on their own return as applicable.
Business accounts use the entity’s EIN. A sole proprietor without an EIN can still use their SSN, but once you hire employees or form an LLC taxed as a partnership or corporation, you need a separate EIN. A single-member LLC with no employees and no corporate election can keep using the owner’s SSN or an existing sole-proprietor EIN.
Custodial accounts for minors under UGMA or UTMA use the child’s SSN, because the child is the legal owner. The custodian manages the account, but the income is the minor’s and is taxed under the minor’s SSN.
Revocable living trusts cause more confusion than they should. While the grantor is alive, the IRS treats the trust as a grantor trust, and the income is reported on the grantor’s personal return under their SSN. The trust doesn’t need its own EIN until the grantor dies and the trust becomes irrevocable.4Internal Revenue Service. When to Get a New EIN

How to Submit or Update Your TIN at Chase
Form W-9 for U.S. Persons
If you’re a U.S. citizen, resident alien, or domestic entity, you certify your TIN on IRS Form W-9. The form asks for your name, address, TIN, and a signature confirming the information is correct and that you aren’t subject to backup withholding. Individuals provide an SSN; corporations and partnerships provide an EIN.6Internal Revenue Service. Form W-9 (Rev. March 2024) Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification
Chase accepts W-9 submissions through the online banking portal, at a branch, or by mail to the bank’s tax reporting department. The mailing address for tax correspondence appears on the back of your bank statements or in the tax section of chase.com. Online or in-person submission is noticeably faster than mail.
W-8 Series for Foreign Persons
Nonresident aliens who earn interest, dividends, or other reportable income from Chase submit a form from the W-8 series rather than a W-9. Most individual nonresidents use Form W-8BEN to establish foreign status and, where available, claim a reduced withholding rate under a U.S. tax treaty. Foreign entities use Form W-8BEN-E, and those earning income connected to a U.S. trade or business use Form W-8ECI.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form W-8BEN (10/2021)
W-8 forms expire at the end of the third calendar year after signing. A form signed in June 2026 remains valid through December 31, 2029. If yours lapses, Chase is required to withhold at the full 30% statutory rate on your U.S.-source income until you file a new one.8Internal Revenue Service. Tax Withholding Types
What Happens If Your TIN Is Missing or Wrong
24% Backup Withholding
If Chase doesn’t have a valid TIN for your account, or the IRS tells the bank the TIN on file is incorrect, federal law requires Chase to begin backup withholding at 24% on reportable payments such as interest and dividends. That amount is taken off the top and sent directly to the IRS before the money reaches you.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 307, Backup Withholding The rate comes from 26 U.S.C. § 3406, which ties it to the fourth-lowest individual income tax bracket.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 3406 – Backup Withholding
You don’t lose the withheld amount. It appears on the 1099 Chase sends you, and you claim credit for it on your Form 1040. But having 24% skimmed off every interest payment for months while you resolve the paperwork is far easier to prevent than to undo.
B-Notices
When the IRS flags a TIN mismatch, Chase receives a CP2100 or CP2100A notice and then sends you what’s called a B-Notice with a blank W-9. There are two levels.11Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding “B” Program
- A first B-Notice is resolved by completing the W-9 with your correct TIN, signing it, and returning it. If you don’t respond within 30 business days of the bank receiving the IRS notice, backup withholding begins.
- A second B-Notice, triggered when the same TIN is flagged again within three years, requires more. A W-9 alone isn’t enough. You must provide a copy of your Social Security card or an IRS Letter 147C verifying your name and EIN.
While a TIN issue is unresolved, Chase may also restrict your ability to open new accounts or complete certain transactions.
When You Need to Update the TIN on File
For individuals, a name change through marriage or divorce doesn’t change your SSN, but you should update your name with both the Social Security Administration and Chase so the records match. A mismatch between the name on your account and the name tied to your SSN at the IRS is one of the most common B-Notice triggers.
For businesses, changing your name or address doesn’t require a new EIN. Changing your legal structure usually does — converting a sole proprietorship to a corporation, for example, or terminating an LLC and forming a new entity. Once you have the new EIN, submit an updated W-9 to Chase so the bank reports income under the correct number going forward.4Internal Revenue Service. When to Get a New EIN
