A “CF United” charge on your bank or credit card statement is almost always a small purchase from a Canteen-operated vending machine, self-service kiosk, or workplace micro-market. Canteen runs one of the largest unattended retail networks in the country, and its cashless transactions post under abbreviated billing names like CF United, USA Canteen Vending, or CMS Vend rather than under the name printed on the machine. The amount is usually a few dollars, but the unfamiliar descriptor is what sends people looking for answers.
What CF United Is
Canteen operates vending machines, unattended kiosks, and micro-markets in offices, hospitals, hotels, and airports across the United States. When you tap a card at one of those machines, the transaction is routed by a third-party payment processor, and the statement descriptor reflects Canteen’s billing system instead of the brand on the front of the machine.
The exact wording depends on the processor. Charges routed through Cantaloupe (formerly USA Technologies) typically show as “USA Canteen Vending” with a city and state. Charges processed through Crane Payment Innovations may appear as “CMS Vend*CV” followed by a location code. “CF United” is another variant in the same family. All of them trace back to Canteen.
Where the Charge Likely Came From
Most CF United charges start in office break rooms, hospital cafeterias, hotel lobbies, or airport grab-and-go stations. If your workplace has a self-service cooler or market where you scan a card to grab a sandwich or drink, that’s the most probable source. Amounts usually land between two and ten dollars because they reflect convenience pricing.
Processing lag matters here. A purchase made on Monday may not appear on your statement until Thursday or Friday, which makes it harder to tie the charge back to a specific snack run. Factor in three to five days when you try to place it.
Auto-Reload From the Connect and Pay App
Canteen’s mobile app, Connect & Pay, has an auto-reload feature that adds funds to your account balance whenever it drops below a threshold you set. If you enabled it and forgot, you may see recurring CF United charges that don’t match any specific purchase you remember. The charge is the reload itself, not an individual item. You can turn auto-reload off inside the app’s settings.
How to Verify the Charge
Run through a quick check before assuming fraud. Think about whether you used a vending machine, break room kiosk, or airport grab-and-go station in the days before the charge date. Account for the processing lag. Consider whether anyone else authorized on your card, like a spouse or dependent, might have made the purchase.
If you still can’t place it, pull these details off your statement: the exact transaction date, the dollar amount, and any merchant ID or location code inside the descriptor. Many Canteen machines also carry a small Terminal ID sticker near the card reader. If the kiosk offered a digital receipt by email or QR code at the time of purchase, that receipt is the best way to match the charge to a specific transaction later.
Contacting Canteen for a Refund
For a legitimate billing error like a duplicate charge or an incorrect amount, going to Canteen directly is usually faster than opening a bank dispute. The contact route depends on the descriptor:
- “USA Canteen Vending [city/state]”: call Cantaloupe at 888-561-4748 and choose option 1.
- “CMS Vend*CV[city]”: go to cmsvend.com and submit a refund request through the online form.
- Cash purchases or general billing questions: contact your local Canteen branch. Corporate customer service runs Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern.
If the vendor doesn’t respond or you believe the charge is genuinely unauthorized, escalate to your bank.
Disputing an Unauthorized Charge With Your Bank
Deadlines and liability differ depending on which type of card was used. The difference matters, because debit cards expose you to more risk the longer you wait.
Debit Card Disputes
Debit card transactions fall under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E. Your liability depends on how quickly you report:
- Within 2 business days: liability caps at $50, or the actual charge if it’s less than $50.
- After 2 business days but within 60 days of the statement: liability rises to a maximum of $500.
- After 60 days: you can be on the hook for the full amount of any unauthorized transfers that occur after that window, with no cap.1eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers
That unlimited-liability tier is where people get hurt. A small vending charge on its own is minor, but a compromised card number is often used for other transactions you haven’t spotted yet.
Once you report the error, the bank must investigate and resolve it within 10 business days. It can extend the investigation to 45 days, but only if it provisionally credits your account within those first 10 business days. For point-of-sale debit card transactions, the extended window can run up to 90 days.2Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.11 – Procedures for Resolving Errors
Credit Card Disputes
Credit card charges are governed by the Fair Credit Billing Act, which is more consumer-friendly. Maximum liability for unauthorized charges is $50, and most major issuers waive even that.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1643 – Liability of Holder of Credit Card
To preserve your dispute rights, send written notice to your card issuer within 60 days of the statement date. The notice should include your name and account number, identify the charge you believe is an error, and explain why. The issuer must acknowledge the notice within 30 days and resolve the investigation within two billing cycles, not to exceed 90 days. During that investigation, the issuer cannot try to collect the disputed amount or report it as delinquent.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors
Avoiding the Confusion Next Time
A few habits keep the descriptor from tripping you up again. Check whether you have auto-reload turned on in the Connect & Pay app and switch it off if you’d rather load funds manually.5Canteen. The Connect and Pay App – Features and Benefits Request a digital receipt whenever a kiosk offers one, so a statement entry can be matched to an actual purchase days later. Note the Terminal ID printed near the card reader if you think a charge is off; that number lets both the bank and Canteen identify the exact machine.
For workplace machines, your facility or office manager can usually confirm whether the building’s vending is operated by Canteen. One quick conversation can save a call to the bank the next time an unfamiliar descriptor shows up.
