Earning the Certified Financial Planner designation takes four things: a bachelor’s degree paired with CFP Board-registered coursework, qualifying professional experience, a passing score on the 170-question CFP exam, and clearance through an ethics review and background check. After certification, you keep the marks by completing 30 hours of continuing education every two years and paying an annual fee, currently $575.1CFP Board. New CFP Certification Fee, Effective October 1, 2025 Each requirement has its own rules, and a few of them trip candidates up.
Education
Two things are required here. First, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any field. Second, completion of coursework registered with the CFP Board. The degree can come before you pass the exam or within five years after, which lets candidates without a completed degree sit for the exam first.2CFP Board. Education Requirement
The registered coursework covers insurance, investments, tax planning, retirement, estate planning, and the psychology of financial planning. Every registered program ends with a capstone course, a comprehensive plan-development exercise that pulls the disciplines together around one client scenario. The capstone must be completed through a CFP Board-registered program and is designed to be your final course before the exam.3CFP Board. The Capstone Course
Accelerated Path
Holders of certain credentials can skip most of the coursework. CPAs, licensed attorneys, CFA charterholders, Chartered Financial Consultants, Chartered Life Underwriters, and holders of a Ph.D. in finance or economics all qualify, along with several other designations. You still have to complete the capstone, pass the exam, meet the experience requirement, and submit a transcript showing a bachelor’s degree or higher.4CFP Board. Accelerated Path
Experience
The board offers two ways to satisfy the experience requirement.5CFP Board. The Experience Requirement
- The Standard Pathway requires 6,000 hours of professional experience related to the financial planning process, such as analyzing client financial data, developing recommendations, or implementing plans. Supervision by a current CFP professional is not required.
- The Apprenticeship Pathway requires 4,000 hours, all completed under the direct supervision of a CFP professional.
Whichever path you take, your hours must fall within a specific window: no earlier than 10 years before you pass the exam and no later than 5 years after. Hours outside that window don’t count, and you’ll need to log additional qualifying time inside it.6CFP Board. The Paths to Experience
The Exam
The exam runs three times a year, during eight-day windows in March, July, and November.7CFP Board. Upcoming Exam Dates and Registration Process There are 170 multiple-choice questions in three formats: stand-alone questions testing a specific concept or calculation, short scenarios with roughly three related questions each, and longer case studies with eight to twelve questions attached.8CFP Board. Exam Format
Content is drawn from the board’s Principal Knowledge Topics and weighted based on a practice analysis study. Retirement savings and income planning carries the heaviest weight at 18%, followed by investment planning at 17%, general financial planning principles at 15%, and tax planning at 14%. Risk management and insurance is 11%, estate planning 10%, professional conduct and regulation 8%, and the psychology of financial planning 7%.9CFP Board. Fees and Retakes
Registration is tiered by how early you sign up. For the July 2026 window, early bird is $825, standard is $925, and late is $1,025.7CFP Board. Upcoming Exam Dates and Registration Process You pay the full amount for each retake.
Attempts are capped at five over your lifetime and three within any rolling 24-month period. Fail three within 24 months and you sit out three full administrations before registering again.10CFP Board. Application, Ethics Review, and Background Check
After passing the exam, you apply for certification through the board’s online portal. You’ll submit documentation of your education and experience. If your education provider didn’t transmit completion data automatically, you’ll report your coursework and upload transcripts yourself. Experience hours require verification from a supervisor or other qualified reference.
The application also includes an Ethics Declaration. The CFP Board asks you to disclose felony or misdemeanor charges, adverse regulatory actions, civil lawsuits alleging fraud or professional misconduct, professional license suspensions or revocations, employment terminations involving allegations of dishonesty, personal or business bankruptcies, and federal tax liens.12CFP Board. Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct The board runs its own background check against regulatory databases. Disclosure alone doesn’t disqualify you, but concealing something that later surfaces very likely will.
Once certified, you pay the $575 annual certification fee, in effect since October 2025, to keep using the marks.1CFP Board. New CFP Certification Fee, Effective October 1, 2025
Continuing Education
Every two years, certified professionals must complete 30 hours of continuing education. Two of those hours have to come from a pre-approved CFP Board ethics course; the other 28 can cover any of the board’s principal knowledge topics.13CFP Board. Continuing Education Requirements New professionals have their hours prorated into the two-year cycle based on their renewal month.14CFP Board. Renewal Policies
Keep the paperwork. The board requires you to retain records of completed CE programs for at least four years after completion.13CFP Board. Continuing Education Requirements If the board audits you and you can’t produce documentation, it’s treated as if the hours were never completed. Falling short can lead to suspension or revocation of your right to use the marks. If certification does lapse, there is a formal reinstatement process, but it is not automatic.15CFP Board. Fiduciary Duty and Ongoing Disclosures
Certified professionals operate under a fiduciary standard whenever they provide financial advice to a client, meaning they must act in the client’s best interest rather than simply recommend something suitable. Conflicts of interest must be disclosed and managed transparently.12CFP Board. Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct
Certain events must be reported to the board in writing within 30 calendar days: criminal charges, adverse regulatory actions, civil lawsuits involving professional misconduct, license suspensions, terminations for cause, bankruptcy filings, and federal tax liens.12CFP Board. Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct These are not deferred to renewal.
Who Can Use the CFP Marks
Only individuals who have completed every requirement and been officially certified can use the marks. If you’ve finished the education requirement but haven’t been certified, you may describe yourself as a “Candidate for CFP® certification” on resumes and job applications for up to five years. Attaching “CFP® Candidate” to your name is explicitly prohibited.16CFP Board.
