Casual Employee Superannuation: Rates, Deadlines, and Payday Super

If you work casual shifts in Australia, your employer owes you superannuation at 12% of your ordinary time earnings from your very first shift, and from 1 July 2026 that money has to land in your fund within days of each payday rather than months later. Casual employee superannuation follows the same rules as super for full-time and part-time staff, with one narrow carve-out for workers under 18.

Do Casuals Get Super at All

Yes. The old rule that excluded workers earning under $450 in a calendar month is gone. If you are 18 or over and doing casual work, your employer must pay super on what you earn, even if a shift pays you $50.1Fair Work Ombudsman. Tax and Superannuation

The exception is workers under 18. A casual who hasn’t turned 18 only qualifies for super in a week where they work more than 30 hours. Once they cross that 30-hour mark in a given week, super is owed on that week’s earnings.2Australian Taxation Office. Work Out if You Have to Pay Super

Being paid as a contractor doesn’t automatically put you outside the system either. If you’re engaged as an individual under a contract that is mainly for your personal labour and skill, and you do the work yourself rather than delegating it, the hiring business owes you super the same way it would an employee.3Australian Taxation Office. Super for Independent Contractors Holding an ABN doesn’t change that analysis. What does change it is contracting through a company, trust, or partnership rather than as yourself: in that case the hirer owes no super.

How Much Super and on What Earnings

The super guarantee rate is 12% for the 2025–26 financial year and stays at 12% into 2026–27.4Australian Taxation Office. Super Guarantee Your employer applies that 12% to your ordinary time earnings (OTE) for each pay cycle.

Casual Loading Counts

OTE includes your base hourly rate plus the casual loading paid on top.5Australian Taxation Office. List of Payments That Are Ordinary Time Earnings So if you’re paid $30 per hour with a 25% casual loading, your OTE rate is $37.50 per hour, and super is calculated on the full loaded figure. Work a week of ordinary hours that pays $1,000 including loading, and the employer owes you $120 in super.

What Doesn’t Attract Super

Several payment types sit outside OTE:

  • Overtime hours worked beyond the ordinary hours set out in the relevant award or agreement.
  • Expense allowances paid on the expectation you’ll spend them on work-related costs.
  • Workers’ compensation payments made while you aren’t required to work.
  • Termination payments, including redundancy, severance, and unused leave paid on termination.
  • Parental leave pay, whether employer-funded or government-funded.

Bonuses and commissions are only excluded when they relate entirely to work performed outside ordinary hours. A bonus tied to ordinary-hours work counts as OTE.5Australian Taxation Office. List of Payments That Are Ordinary Time Earnings

When Super Has to Be Paid

This is the part that changes significantly on 1 July 2026.

Quarterly Deadlines Until 30 June 2026

Under the current system, your employer’s super contributions must reach your fund by the 28th day after each quarter ends:6Australian Taxation Office. Super Payment Due Dates

  • Quarter 1 (July–September): due 28 October
  • Quarter 2 (October–December): due 28 January
  • Quarter 3 (January–March): due 28 April
  • Quarter 4 (April–June): due 28 July

The last quarterly payment under the old rules is the one due 28 July 2026, covering the April–June 2026 quarter. Employers who have been using the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House need to know it closes permanently at 11:59 pm AEST on 30 June 2026, so it won’t be available for that final July payment.7Australian Taxation Office. Payday Super From 1 July 2026

From 1 July 2026, employers must pay super at the same time as wages, and the contribution must reach your fund within seven business days of payday.8Fair Work Ombudsman. Payday Super: New Rules Starting 1 July 2026 For the very first contribution to a brand-new employee, the employer gets 20 business days instead of seven. Once the fund receives the money, it has three business days to allocate it to your account.9Australian Taxation Office. Payday Super Regulations: Key Details for Businesses to Know

For casuals, this is a real improvement. Under the quarterly system, super on a July shift might not turn up in your account until late October. Under Payday Super, it arrives within days of the wage that generated it, and starts earning investment returns straight away.

Choosing Your Super Fund

When you start a new casual job, your employer must offer you a choice of super fund. You tell them where to send your money using the Superannuation Standard Choice Form, available through ATO online services or on paper.10Australian Taxation Office. Superannuation Standard Choice Form You’ll need your tax file number, the fund name, its ABN, and its unique superannuation identifier (USI). Get the USI from your fund’s own website or member statement; a wrong identifier can send your money to the wrong place.

You can complete the form digitally through myGov linked to ATO online services under “Employment” and “New employment,” then hand the printed summary to your employer.11Australian Taxation Office. New Employees

If you don’t nominate a fund, your employer cannot just pick one. They must first ask the ATO for your “stapled” super fund, which is an existing account already linked to you so that changing jobs doesn’t create duplicate accounts with duplicate fees.12Australian Taxation Office. Stapled Super Funds for Employers The employer submits your TFN, name, and date of birth through ATO online services for business and usually gets a result in minutes. Only if the ATO confirms you have no stapled fund can they pay into their default fund. If you later nominate your own fund, the employer has two months to redirect contributions to it.

What to Do If Your Super Is Missing

Start by comparing your payslips against the transaction history in your super fund’s app or member portal. Fund balances update with a lag, so check the transactions, not just the balance.

If contributions really are missing, the ATO runs an online tool called “Report unpaid super contributions from my employer.”13Australian Taxation Office. Report Unpaid Super Contributions From My Employer You’ll need your TFN, the period you’re worried about, and your employer’s ABN. A myGov login speeds it up but isn’t required. The ATO then investigates the employer’s records.

When the ATO confirms unpaid super, it assesses a super guarantee charge (SGC) against the employer, which is always more expensive than the original contribution would have been. Under the quarterly system, the SGC includes the shortfall, nominal interest at 10% per year running from the first day of the relevant quarter, and a $20 per employee per quarter administration fee. The shortfall is calculated on salary and wages including overtime, not just OTE, which makes the base figure larger than the contribution the employer originally skipped.14Australian Taxation Office. The Super Guarantee Charge

Under Payday Super, the SGC is calculated per pay event and adds a 60% administrative uplift on top of the shortfall and notional earnings, with a further 25% loading if the employer also breached choice-of-fund rules. An employer who then fails to pay the SGC within 28 days of a notice faces an extra 25% late penalty, rising to 50% for repeat offenders in the previous 24 months, and neither rate can be waived.15Australian Taxation Office. The New Super Guarantee Charge

There is no published deadline for reporting unpaid super, but earlier is better. Recovery gets harder if the employer runs into financial trouble, and once Payday Super begins you’ll be able to spot a missed payment within days instead of waiting a full quarter to find out.
