Because Cash App Taxes doesn’t support e-filing Form 1040-X, amending a Cash App Taxes return means preparing the amendment yourself and mailing it to the IRS on paper. You’ll pull the figures from your original return’s PDF, complete Form 1040-X in its three-column format, attach any schedules that changed, and send the package by mail to the IRS center that serves your state. Most amendments take 8 to 12 weeks to process, and some run to 16.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return
Before you start, make sure an amendment is actually what you need. The IRS fixes math errors on its own and will write to you if a W-2 or similar form is missing, so neither one calls for Form 1040-X. File an amendment when the change affects your bottom line: a different filing status, income you left off, a credit or deduction you missed, or a change in the number of dependents.2Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return Wait until your original return has finished processing before filing the 1040-X; sending one in while the first is still being worked slows down both.3Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns and Form 1040X If you’re amending to claim a larger refund, you generally have three years from the date you filed or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.4Internal Revenue Service. Download Your Original Return From Cash App Taxes
Every line on Form 1040-X starts with the numbers you already filed, so get an exact copy before you do anything else. Log into your Cash App Taxes account, open the Tax Returns section, and download the PDF of your Form 1040 along with every supporting schedule. Those line-by-line figures become the “Original Amount” entries in Column A of the 1040-X.
Grab your state return at the same time. If the federal amendment moves your adjusted gross income, taxable income, or credits, the state return will almost certainly need to change too.
Fill Out Form 1040-X
Form 1040-X uses three columns to show exactly what changed.5Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X – Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return Column A holds the original figures from the PDF you just downloaded. Column C holds the corrected figures, the ones the IRS will use going forward. Column B is the difference between them, with decreases shown in parentheses.
Work line by line from 1 through 23, entering numbers in each column. Then recalculate your tax using the corrected taxable income in Column C. Pull the tax tables or worksheets for the year you’re amending, not the current year.
Explain the Change in Plain Language
Part II asks why you’re amending, and the IRS agent reads this section first. Vague answers slow things down. Be specific about what changed, why, and how it moves the numbers. Something like “Received corrected Form 1099-NEC from [payer] showing $5,000 additional nonemployee compensation not included on original return” works far better than “correcting income.”5Internal Revenue Service. Attach Only What Changed
Include any schedule or form whose numbers changed. For unreported self-employment income, that means a corrected Schedule C and Schedule SE. For a late Form 1099, attach a copy. Don’t resend forms that didn’t change, and don’t resend the whole return. Sign and date the 1040-X; an unsigned form isn’t valid.
Mail the Amendment to the Right IRS Address
The IRS accepts e-filed 1040-X forms through some tax software, but Cash App Taxes isn’t on that list.6Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return Print the completed form, sign it, and mail it to the processing center for your state:

Send the package by certified mail with a return receipt requested. Under federal law, the certified mail receipt is evidence that your return was delivered and fixes the postmark date as the filing date.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying Keep that receipt. If the IRS later says your amendment never arrived or disputes when you filed, it’s your proof.
Pay Any Balance Right Away
If the amendment increases what you owe, pay as soon as you can. Interest and penalties run from the original due date of the return, not from when you file the 1040-X, so waiting only adds to the bill. The failure-to-pay penalty is 0.5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month the balance stays outstanding, capped at 25%.9Internal Revenue Service. Paying now and noting the correct tax year stops the clock on interest and penalties even before the amendment is in the IRS’s hands.
Track the Amendment
The IRS “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool opens up about three weeks after you mail the form. You’ll need your Social Security number, date of birth, and ZIP code to use it.1Internal Revenue Service. Expect 8 to 12 weeks, with some running to 16, because the IRS reviews amendments manually. A refund from a paper-filed amendment typically comes as a check in the mail.
File Your State Amendment Too
A federal change that moves your AGI, deductions, or credits will usually change your state return as well. Most states want a separate amendment that reflects the federal changes, with their own form and their own deadline.2Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return State processing often runs past 20 weeks.
Contact your state’s tax agency for the right form, address, and deadline. Some states give you a set window after a federal change is finalized, often 90 days to a year; others apply their general statute of limitations. The state won’t adjust your return automatically based on the federal amendment. If you don’t file separately, you can be penalized for an incorrect state return.
