Carer’s Tax Allowance: Marriage Allowance, NI Credits, and Council Tax

The carer’s tax allowance question has two answers rolled into one. Carer’s Allowance itself, worth £86.45 a week in 2026/27, is taxable income, but almost no carer ends up paying tax on it because the £12,570 personal allowance easily covers it.1GOV.UK. Benefit and Pension Rates 2026 to 20272GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances Around that, there are several other allowances a carer can claim: Marriage Allowance, National Insurance credits toward the State Pension, and a Council Tax disregard. Together they can be worth over £1,000 a year.

Is Carer’s Allowance Taxable?

Yes. Carer’s Allowance counts as taxable income for income tax purposes.3GOV.UK. Income Tax Tax-Free and Taxable State Benefits That catches a lot of carers off guard, because most other means-tested benefits are not.

In practice, though, the maths usually works out in your favour. The full-rate allowance comes to roughly £4,495 a year. The personal allowance for 2026/27 is £12,570, which is the amount you can earn before any income tax is due.2GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances A carer with no other income sits well under that ceiling and owes nothing. Even with a small part-time wage on top, you are likely to stay below the threshold, because eligibility for Carer’s Allowance itself caps your net earnings at £204 per week from 6 April 2026.1GOV.UK. Benefit and Pension Rates 2026 to 2027

Tax only starts to bite when other income takes you above £12,570. That usually means a pension, rental income, or significant savings interest. Above the threshold, you pay the basic rate of 20% on the excess. HMRC normally collects this through a PAYE coding adjustment rather than a self-assessment return, unless your finances are complex enough to need one anyway.

Marriage Allowance for Carers

This is the tax break most carers can actually use, and many miss it. Marriage Allowance lets a lower-earning spouse or civil partner transfer £1,260 of their personal allowance to their partner, cutting the couple’s tax bill by up to £252 a year.4GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance A carer who has stepped back from paid work is almost the textbook case for it.

Three conditions have to be met:4GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance

  • Your income is under £12,570, so you are not paying income tax yourself.
  • Your partner pays tax at the basic rate, which normally means an income between £12,571 and £50,270.
  • You are married or in a civil partnership. Cohabiting couples cannot claim.

A carer whose only income is Carer’s Allowance of around £4,495 is comfortably inside the lower-earner test. The partner’s personal allowance then rises by £1,260, saving 20% of that amount in tax.

You can backdate a claim to 6 April 2021 if you were eligible in earlier years. A four-year backdate can produce a lump-sum refund of over £1,000.4GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance If your partner has died since 5 April 2021, you can still claim by phoning the Income Tax helpline.

National Insurance Credits and Carer’s Credit

Time spent caring can leave a gap in your National Insurance record, and gaps reduce your eventual State Pension. You need 35 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions for the full new State Pension.5GOV.UK. The New State Pension What You’ll Get

If you receive Carer’s Allowance, Class 1 National Insurance credits are added to your record automatically. You do not need to do anything separately.6GOV.UK. Carer’s Allowance Effect on Other Benefits

If you don’t qualify for Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Credit can plug the gap. It is aimed at people who care for at least 20 hours a week but fall short of the 35-hour threshold that Carer’s Allowance requires, often because they split their time between two people.7GOV.UK. Carer’s Credit Carer’s Credit pays nothing directly; it only protects your pension record.

Council Tax Discount for Carers

Council Tax has its own carer’s allowance, in the loose sense: a “disregard” that removes you from the adult headcount used to calculate the bill. If disregarding you leaves only one countable adult, the bill drops by 25%. If it leaves none, the discount is 50%.

To qualify, all of the following must apply:

  • You provide at least 35 hours of care per week.
  • You live with the person you care for.
  • You are not their spouse or partner, and not their parent if they are under 18.
  • The person you care for receives a qualifying disability benefit such as PIP, DLA at the middle or highest care rate, or Attendance Allowance.

Councils do not apply the disregard automatically. You have to contact yours and ask. On a Band D property, a 25% cut is worth several hundred pounds a year.

Watch the Knock-On Effect on Other Benefits

Before claiming Carer’s Allowance, run the numbers on how it interacts with the household’s other benefits. The person you care for will usually lose any severe disability premium paid with their benefits, or the equivalent extra amount in their Pension Credit.6GOV.UK. Carer’s Allowance Effect on Other Benefits In some cases that loss exceeds what you gain.

If you get Universal Credit, your UC payment is reduced pound for pound by your Carer’s Allowance, though you may qualify for a carer element within UC either way.6GOV.UK. And you cannot build up extra State Pension by deferring during any period you receive Carer’s Allowance. A benefits adviser can talk you through the figures if any of that looks like it might apply.
