Capital One Wire Transfer Form: Limits, Fees, and Cutoff Times

To send a Capital One wire transfer, sign in at capitalone.com for a domestic wire, call 1-800-655-BANK to send one by phone, or visit a branch to send an international wire. Domestic wires cost $30, international wires cost $40, and same-day processing is available if you submit before the daily cutoff.

What to Gather Before You Start

Have the recipient’s details in hand before you log in. For a domestic wire you need the recipient’s full legal name, their bank’s name and address, their account number, and the receiving bank’s nine-digit ABA routing number.

International wires need more. You’ll need the receiving bank’s SWIFT code (also called a BIC), and for some countries an International Payments System Routing Code, which the branch staff will ask for if it applies.

One trap worth knowing about up front: if you’re wiring to one of your own external accounts already linked in Capital One, that account has to have been on file for at least 30 days before the bank will send funds to it.1Capital One. Wire Transfer Support Adding an external account and wiring to it the same week won’t work.

Sending an International Wire at a Branch

International wires go through branches only. You can’t send them online, in the app, or by phone. The fee is $40.1Capital One. Bring a government-issued ID, the recipient’s SWIFT code, and their account details. Branch cutoff for same-day processing is 3 PM ET.

Cutoff times decide whether your wire moves the same day. Domestic wires submitted online must be in before 2:00 PM ET.4Capital One. International wires take longer. Capital One says they may take up to 10 business days to reach the recipient’s account, depending on the destination country, any intermediary banks, and local posting schedules.1Capital One. Wire Transfer Support

What You Can’t Undo

Domestic wires cannot be modified or canceled once submitted.1Capital One. Wire Transfer Support There is no undo button. Check every digit of the account number and routing number before you confirm. If you wire funds to the wrong account, the only remedy is to ask Capital One to attempt a recall through the receiving bank, and that bank isn’t required to return the money. If the recipient has already withdrawn it, recovery is unlikely.

International wires have a narrow window. Under the CFPB’s remittance transfer rule, you can cancel an international transfer within 30 minutes of paying, as long as the recipient hasn’t already received the funds.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E 1005.34 – Procedures for Cancellation and Refund of Remittance Transfers Consumer wires sent to international recipients qualify as remittance transfers under this rule.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E 1005.30 – Remittance Transfer Definitions To cancel, contact Capital One immediately with your name and enough detail to identify the specific transfer.

Fraud Patterns and Reporting Unauthorized Transfers

Wire fraud works because wires are fast and hard to reverse. A few patterns show up over and over:

  • Last-minute changes to wiring instructions in a real estate deal. Scammers intercept emails and slip in their own account details. Verify by calling your title company or attorney at a number you already have, not one from the email.
  • Urgency or secrecy. Any pressure to wire immediately, keep it quiet, or send funds to a “safe account” is a warning sign.
  • Refund overpayment schemes. Someone claims to have overpaid you and asks you to wire back the difference. The original payment is fraudulent and will be reversed.

Phone authentication blocks a stranger who has only your login. It won’t protect you when you’re the one at the keyboard following a scammer’s script. The bank sends whatever you tell it to send.

If you see wire activity you didn’t authorize, call Capital One at 877-383-4802.1Capital One. Wire Transfer Support Under Regulation E, your liability for unauthorized electronic transfers is capped at $50 if you report within two business days of discovering the problem. Wait longer than two days and exposure rises to $500. Fail to report unauthorized transactions shown on a statement within 60 days and you can be liable for the full amount of transfers that happen after that window.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E 1005.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers

Recordkeeping for Larger Wires

Banks have to collect and retain specific records for wire transfers of $3,000 or more. If you’re sending in person and you’re not already an established customer, expect the branch to ask for government-issued ID, your taxpayer identification number or Social Security number, and your name and address. For wires initiated remotely, the bank records your identifying information and the payment method used to fund the transfer.9FFIEC BSA/AML InfoBase. Funds Transfers Recordkeeping

The Bank Secrecy Act also requires banks to file a Currency Transaction Report for cash transactions over $10,000 in a single day.10Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. The Bank Secrecy Act That applies to physical currency, not to a wire funded from your checking balance. Wiring $25,000 out of your account won’t trigger a CTR. Walking into a branch with $25,000 in cash to fund it will.
